    This has to start to become an actual issue in public perception. Maybe if celebrities and the media pay attention to longevity science it will be pushed further towards being mainstream.

      I agree with your premise, but until such time as age reversal is objectively and undeniably demonstrated in humans on a large and diverse scale, the media and quite frankly society at large will remain skeptical, if not totally oblivious.....and understandably so. Experimenting on worms, mice and dogs and showing extraordinary results is all well and good, but it is becoming increasing clear that there almost certainly will not be any level of plasticity in humans with these treatments, at least not for quite a number of years. I have an element of faith in exponential AI speeding up the R&D process over the next 5-10 years, but even then I'm not overly optimistic that these therapies will ever be comprehensive or effective enough in my lifetime (I'm almost 34) to reverse aging to any significant degree. As someone who has followed this science religiously for nearly a decade, I am astonished at how slowly this field is developing - there still isn't even a conscensus within the longevity science community on what causes the diseases of aging in the first place, much less an agreement on how to proceed.

      @@johnniejay Not true they did a Lot the last decade stemmcell Therapie is extremely important and is unser way to becoming widespread and used all over the body + one breakthrough Like the one from David Sinclairs lab recently is enough for one decade. @@christophsteck531 I will agree that stem cell therapy is probably the first major step towards the endgame (you could also make strong arguments for CRISPR and Senolytics), but getting FDA / regulatory approval in this area is 5-10 years away at least. Most stem cell therapy clinics are currently situated in developing countries for wealthy health tourists.
      AI should have a profound effect on the expediting of biotech development. Every notable figure in the field agrees with this as well. I personally dont believe that there can ever be 'enough (advancement) for one decade', but thats just me.

      @@johnniejay If you've watched more of his other interviews or talks, you'll have probably seen him speak about Longevity Escape Velocity (L.E.V). It's unlikely there'll be a comprehensive cure to aging any time soon, but there may be something that could for example, give us 10 years, which may buy you enough time for more effective therapies to come along, which will also buy you more time, etc, so these early therapies may mean a lot when it comes to making the cut for L.E.V. Also, if you are 34 now, that means you have about 60 years of progress to look forward to. That is not something to be underestimated. Think where we were in 1960. Or, that in the 1920s it was considered science fiction to think we'd be able to get to the moon, and we did it only ~40 years later.
      I understand your pessimism for public (and government) acceptance too, but once it starts, it will snowball.

    These questions concerning "what if a Supreme Court Justice is immortal?" are so far down the line, that they are ridiculous. If the technologies he's talking about can extend our lives and better the quality of life for people for a solid 3-5 years, it will be amazing. If this research does the same for a 5-10 years, then wow! Immortality is really, really far in the horizon, and it may be completely and totally impossible, so let's focus on what he's talking about: allowing people to live longer and better lives.

    • @squamish4244
      @squamish4244 Před 3 lety

      That is certainly a very realistic goal with huge implications in itself. People miss what an impact 'average' has on a whole population. The book 'The Longevity Dividend', which you have probably heard of/read, claims that just seven years of increased health on average has saved trillions of dollars and massively increased GDP in the developed world, and has been responsible for the greatly increased vigour of middle-aged and old people in the last century.
      I am a historian and in past centuries, people often lived as long as today. What is almost always overlooked by longevity advocates, however, is that the condition that people live in now until their 70s or 80s is WAY higher than it used to be except for the healthiest people. People dragged themselves through their 40s, 50s and 60s with chronic illnesses, pain and exhaustion and suffered in ways that a homeless person wouldn't suffer now.

      He's not selling or promoting existing products or therapies, but is trying to kickstart a new industry. To that end he's been hard at work for decades, even sacrificing some health in the process. He's said he sleeps too little in order to work, and he's perfectly aware that that's unhealthy and ages people faster, but in his judgement it's worth it if he can bring about treatments earlier. All that said, he's thin, while a lot of old men have a pot belly (which is very unhealhy).
