  • A woman plans to kill herself at a family dinner.
CLAC is used with permission from Fabien Ara. Learn more at fabienara.com.
A family has gathered for dinner at a chic Chinese restaurant. Their genial night out, though, is interrupted when the mother has an announcement: she's going to kill herself that night.
The family takes in this shocking pronouncement and news, destabilizing any pretense of equanimity and civility. (Even the senile grandmother seems affected by what's unraveling.) The resulting freakout uncovers a whole series of secrets, resentments and unspoken truths lingering under the surface.
The "fraught family dinner" is a familiar trope of many short dramas, and rightfully so: the structure brings together a gamut of conflicting personalities, agendas and needs and creates a powder-keg of an emotional situation that often makes for great writing and performances. This short -- written and directed by Fabien Ara with great assurance -- takes on this familiar narrative terrain, but applies a sharp, stylish gloss on it, making for a showcase of barbed wit and consistently engaging energy.
The film's look and feel is the first clue that this is no ordinary family drama, with darkly gleaming, almost sinister cinematography and elegant camera movements and framing. But as the family settles into their meal and the action unfolds, the film language emphasizes tight close-ups on each member's face, balanced by clever, fast-paced editing that derives sardonic humor from perfectly timed reaction shots to the increasingly outlandish emotions.
Viewers get a sense of the complicated dynamics between a domineering mother, a passive father and their two competitive daughters, developed through tightly paced and sharp writing. The great accomplishment, however, is the collective strength of a cast -- led by actor Marie Boissard as the lofty, formidable mother -- whose performances perfectly balance the line between the real shock and devastation of the news and the dark, stylized humor that comes from each member's unique but self-absorbed reaction. All the actors are terrific and utterly committed to difficult characters and moments that unfurl to the equivalent of an emotional bloodbath.
CLAC is supremely accomplished in its writing, performance, and craft, with each beat perfectly timed and injecting just the right pique of humor when the characters are at their worst. Many family dramas default to warm, fuzzy emotions and affirm the lovability of the family unit in the end. But the unique vision of CLAC commits to the idea that moments of crisis can bring out the dysfunction hidden underneath facades of codependency and denial in a family. It does so with great style and verve, ending with a perfectly calibrated image of chaos and pathos that is both ridiculously funny and sublimely sad -- a pair of qualities that could describe many family occasions, perhaps.

I was starting to think that the mother put this emotional stress on her family just to have them share secrets that were driving them apart, but the realization at the end that she had already taken the pills was just heartbreaking. The music overcoming the absolute silence left when the mother went to the bathroom only for it to become underlaid by sounds of wailing was phenomenal. Oh, and the fact that so many people at dinner were listening in and cared to help this woman by getting up and going to the bathroom themselves, or maybe even becoming so overwhelmed they had to leave the scene entirely or felt frozen in place is brilliant, especially to do during the end credits. The girl who was having a 32nd birthday being among these people was an especially nice touch. Comparing the celebration of her life with the tragedy of the family's loss highlights the real pain of it, all while having a hilarious waitress? This film deserves a sequel and many awards!

    At the start the mother said she was reconsidering the pills becouse of possible "leaking". When she peed herself thats when the husband figured out that she had already taken the pills. It only later dawns on the daughters as they rush to her side. The dad just sits there, contemplating it all, now knowing his wife took the decision before the proper goodbye she had promised him that night. Its also possible that the reason she waited 6 months for the dinner wasnt just becouse of her thinking about suicide, but also the fact her children avoided contact. You can see on her face how hard this actualy was for her, the pain in her eyes the whole night knowing she already did what she did, hearing how her children will miss her but she refuses to live the tortured existance her mother endures. She loves her mother, but would never want that for herself, or to force the role of caretaker onto her loved ones as she resented it so;-;

At the end of the film everyone is overcome by their feelings. Some people are so taken aback they must hurry out the exit, others can't help but laugh at this seemingly ridiculous display of public emotion. Some people get up and can't help themselves from trying to do something, so they rush to the toilet hoping they might be able to somehow help. Some people are completely dismayed, tears begin to flood their eyes. Other's can't do anything but sit in their chairs shocked and horrified. Even the stoic waitress displays her incredulousness by simply getting on with her job. Stunning performance and absolutely believable. I don't wish this scene on anyone.

They would want to at least die with a little dignity or at least make their last moments not so pathetic if that makes sense. The waitress is the indifferent platform. Neither here or there. Spectators to problems that chose to act like there is nothing going on.
Mom takes it all on. Dad knows everything but mom leads.
It takes a catastrophic event for us to all stop and listen to each other. Address those dark secrets and resentments dating back to childhood.
Grandma is a glimmer of hope. There is still something in there.
What may look like a personal problem, if left unchecked will affect us all in the end. First the mom keeps it to herself for 6 months. Then the rest of the family becomes aware of how bad things are and of course the proposed solution. By the end of it all, the entire restaurant is affected and in trouble too.

Clac was an incredible short film. There was a plethora of serious issues the family shared but I couldn't help laughing at the actress who played the grandmother. She was amazing. It was funny also when the mother said she was going to kill herself and then she decided that she should also kill her mother and that her mother should go first. Very serious subject matter shared with humor. When the daughter shared that her sister was given the larger bedroom, I was thinking that most houses the rooms are not always equal in size. Someone will not be receiving the largest room if you have more than one child. The actors did a wonderful job. The manner that the subject was presented allowed me to watch without breaking down in tears.

Honestly what I take from this is to appreciate every moment with your parents and family. You can be mad at them or grow apart but when your parents or family member are going to pass away soon you'll wish you had more time to spend with them and to wish you had more time to show how much you love them and appreciate them. Anyone reading this appreciate the time you spend with your parents and family because when they past away you can never have that time with them back. Love your parents and family members now before it's too late.

I honestly thought the mother was the B word from the beginning, but she actually cared for her family. According to my interpretation, she chose a public place to disclose her “plan” in order to create witnesses and rule out investigations in case anybody suggests that foul play was involved in her demise. She does say she doesn’t want to die in the toilet of a Chinese Restaurant, but ultimately, she does so; I have watched people go through a love-hate relationship with the place they call home after their loved one dies in it. The father, and possibly, Nana as well would have to go back to living in that place where she died, so she preserves the “sanctity” of their home. She wanted to not inflict, at least, any tangible burdens on her family, hence her actions (of course, the emotional burden of it all would be the greatest)

Man I wish I had half the mother's chill and resolve when I'm about to die/kill myself. Then again it also takes a certain disregard of their feelings to proceed regardless. Gonna remember this when it's my turn.
Poor nana watching her family fragment and collapse under the weight their escalating burdens and all as she tries to get her feelings across.
That dad's dark humor lol. I can also sympathise with how resigned he was all through the ordeal. Watching everything around him burn and collapse as he lacked the strength and resolve to stop it.
The family was wonderfully dysfunctional too with how they were forced to accept the escalating odds and the feelings they chose to bury before this incident.
That waitress was also phenomenal with how she just continues on with her job even with all the drama.
Just goes to show that life still goes on even amidst the tragedy unfolding and it's also reminiscent in reality with how a lot of people only notice much less help when the warning signs were well beyond intervention.
Another brilliant short film Omeleto. The happy endings in some were nice but I quite like the twist in this one since not all get happy endings or want to and sometimes that's just fine by me or I'm way too resigned to care at that point. Still, it's good to see other people making different choices even if it's arguably bad.

The ending was over the top. It would not have really happened like that. Various people would have called for paramedics. She would have had her stomach pumped out and treated, then committed to a mental facility. The mother wasn't all that far gone yet. If she was still that cognizant and ambulatory she should have pulled through. She wasn't all that serious about the suicide anyway. Telling them all in a restaurant would actually show she didn't really mean it, knowing people aren't just going to let her die (even if her family might). All in all it would just be theatrics on her part.
