- Welcome to Deansbury Town Model Railway.
Deansbury Town is a OO gauge model railway set in the 1950’s and 1960’s and based on London Midland Region British Railways. In this introductory video I give you a tour of the layout and point out the key features, and what I plan to cover in future videos.
I hope you enjoy this video.
Video made with inshot

Nice layout! 😁👍
Many thanks!
A very interesting system!
cheers!
I think you have made good progress compared to my layout! Well done.
Thanks and great to have you join the channel. Hope you enjoy the videos!
I'm glad to be one of your first (day/vid context) viewers and subscribers.
Looking forward to what vids you make. :) This first one is a great start. Nicely presented n nice layout.
Also I'm building two model railways on my channel if it interests. 🙂
All the best.
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed it. I’ll take a look at your channel, quite like the early railways. Cheers
@@deansburytownmodelrailway5056 Most my pre-grouping modelling isn't shown in many vids yet. In time though they'll have a layout to run on.
Congratulations on building a nicely sceniced layout which will likely give you hours of enjoyment.
Suggestions
The middle “farm” - there is plenty of room here for a large two storey farmhouse and a barn also some cattle or sheep in the fields.
Back scene - scrap the Peco ones, they are toylike. Buy some photographic scenes. Expensive but much better.
If you are competent with scratch building, I would gradually scrap all the Metcalfe/Superquick station and signal box and build your own individual ones. It is better to get away from making your layout look like everyone else’s. And scratchbuilding or kit bashing will help do this.
Sorry if I am sounding negative, I don’t mean to. you have a great layout that could be improved considerably by a few simple tweaks.
Regards
Ray Wilson
Thanks for the feedback much appreciated. I am considering gradually improving the buildings, at least recovering the metcalfe ones in a range of textures to create some variety, and the station is also under consideration. In regards the backscenes I have yet to find a decent photo backscene to fit the look I am after, especially for a more historic layout. They are great for modern layouts but just couldn’t find one to for the industrial 50’s and early 60’s, hence if gone with the peco ones, but I am going to place buildings in from of most of them and attempt to dull them down with a matt wash so they ‘fade away’. If you have any suggestions for a photo backscene to suit I’d certainly take a look! Many thanks.
@@deansburytownmodelrailway5056 Gaugemaster do several sky scenes. They do industrial scenes but they look too modern. I think you may find some if you search eBay or google.
Nice video pal, not really been into trains, but looks good fun!
Cheers, keeps me busy!
The layout looks good. Especially the pullout fiddle yard. Clever idea.
Thanks!
Hi Liam- I am glad you decided to do videos as it looks a good layout already and as the size is similar to mine I shall watch closely for any ideas to pinch HaHa !!.
Hope you will do a video on how you weather stock too.
Stay Safe...........Cheers Kev
Likewise I shall take a look at yours👍 thanks for the comment.
Nice video mate. Just a couple of observations. Detailing, less is more. Don't go overboard with people and vehicles. The farm field and barn is just right as is, it looks like a real location. Backscene, at a show I saw a backscene very much like yours, the club who owned it had mounted the Peco backscenes on thin, 3-4mm ish mdf, cut the sky off, (that must have been a PITA) and painted the cut edge dark green, it looked very effective! Love the fiddle traverser, I could never get mine to slide smoothly, it kept jamming and tipping my stock on its side!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the comment and the advice. I don’t want to overcrowd it, just a few extra details needed I think. I’ve used heavy duty drawer runners so it slides well. Getting consistent alignment is much more of a challenge.
Couldn't agree more with you that less is more. There's often a chance to try to put everything into your layout and because of the the size compromise, looks very unrealistic. I guess I'm in the minority, but I'm not a big fan of figures on layouts. Just think it makes it look more like a model, not less. Especially passengers waiting on the platform for a train. And then the train leaves without them ;)
What you've done so far looks good. You asked for suggestions I had a couple of thoughts. The small paddock areas look good just need a few animals & feed troughs. The Loco servicing area & works seem a bit pushed together in a small space? Swap that industrial low relief building with the big open doors round with the others to make a rail served industry extending the line "into it" & remove the engine shed? Or make it into a bigger TMD? Tracks run to low relief buildings.
Thanks for the comment, and the suggestions. I have taken a look at the corner and am planning to make a few changes to de clutter it a little
Really impressed with Deansbury Town look forward to watching your updates. Thanks for sharing your layout with us all.
Thanks Steve 👍
Great first video, Liam. Nice to have another channel featuring a well thought out, beautiful layout to watch. I think I commented months ago on FB but I absolutely love the terrrace in the hillside. I’d love to see more of that on a future video. The countryside scene and especially the bridge over the stream really looks good. I’m looking forward to seeing more. Thank you for taking the plunge! -Michael
Thanks Michael, really appreciate your comment. I’ll be doing a more on the terrace and town at some point later on, and looking for an excuse to get some scratch builds in! One thing I have learnt is I should have started at the back and worked forward so I’m focusing on the back scene first. Cheers.
Congratulations Liam for a well presented video of your lovely layout. I look forward to seeing more from you in your updates. 🚂🚃🚃🚃
Many thanks for the kind comment
Hi Liam
You have a impressive layout with some fantastic scenics i also like your fiddle yard traviser board very neat idea CZcams/social media are great ways to sharing ideas thoughts and hopfull gain a little inspiration for future projects I look forward to following your Journey All the best Pete
Thanks for the kind comments, very much appreciated Pete. Glad you like the layout, I hope to do some more videos soon.
Good looking layout. Looking forward to future updates.
Many thanks
Hi Liam - Just came across your channel and very impressed so far.
Like you I started off with Metcalfe but I am now leaning towards Scalescenes which I have yet to start with, bearing in mind I am N Gauge.
Just watched this one after the one where you work on the terraced houses on the back scene, very good and loved the effect.
Looking forward to catching up on more of your videos and following your build.
Regards Chris
Hi Chris, thanks for the kind feedback and glad you enjoyed the videos. I’m working on the next one at the moment.
Great idea, without doubt CZcams can keep you going when the going get's tough. I'm 10 years in also. Your layoout looks great.
Thank you. Yes, there are times when I loose interest and it takes me while to get back into it again. I’m hoping if I can get into a regular video cycle it will keep me going.
Really great lookin layout, good job.
Good mix of things going on. Country area is a nice backdrop for the trains, a lot of hard work there👍
Many thanks for the kind comments, much appreciated. Lots done, but still loads to do! Cheers
Hi Liam, I did comment on your post regarding starting a Chanel, I am so glad you did, looks a lovely layout and you have already done so much good work, looking forward to seeing it develop and watching future videos, cheers for now... Martin S
Hi Martin, thanks for the positive comment, really appreciated. 👍
Really enjoyed watching your first video, I have subscribed and look forward to future video’s, cheers for now John
Many thanks John, glad you enjoyed it. I’m working on the next video at the moment.
Very nice looking layout! I'll soon be building one just a bit larger than this and I was having doubts about the intended size, but you've done an excellent job in this space and I feel more confident in my design now.
That’s good to hear, thanks for the feedback. The best size is the size you have! I would suggest you think about what you want to do with the layout before you build it - do you want to run trains round, operate a timetable, do some shunting, or do you like the modelling part? Once you know that you can build the layout to support it. I’ve found I actually enjoy building more than running so spend more time constructing buildings than running trains.
Brilliant layout there! cant wait to see more, I would love to see a tutorial or description of the traverser and the collapsible legs! - Joe
Hi Joe, sorry for missing your comment first time round! I’ll maybe do a bit of a tour on the traverser in future.
Wow this is a great layout! Looking forward to watching it develop, it’s got loads of potential! Love the fiddle yard, looks really professionally made, and it’s a super track layout in the station too
Many thanks for the kind comments. Glad you think it looks professional! I won’t zoom in too far! Thanks
@@deansburytownmodelrailway5056 it really does! is the layout in your house or in your shed/garage? And how big is the room/layout?
@@chrisderby986 it’s both! The back of the garage has been converted to a room about 11x7. The layout is 8x5, built in a previous house. I ‘could’ make it a little wider!
@@deansburytownmodelrailway5056 I’m the same, built mine in the box room in my old house, then when I moved it went in the garage which was much larger! After insulating the garage I managed to almost double the size of the layout! With more extensions on the way! You should definitely look into making it larger if you can, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t done it sooner!
@@chrisderby986 it’s possible but would either result in fewer fiddle yard roads or having to amend this to a cassette system which may be more reliable but less flexible, as the fiddle yard currently hits the wall. I will certainly give it some thought. Thanks!
Impressed with your Traverse. I have one on my layout just for Locos as it feeds a TMD/ Shed.
Looking forward to seeing your progress.
Thank you, it does the job (most of the time!). It was originally designed to be lift out, which it still can but there is little need anymore!
Looks like a really cool layout!
Thanks! Glad you like it
I was also thinking horse jumps. Perhaps abandoned farm equipment as the building is run down. Nice layout!
Thank you! I’ve got a white metal kit with a few bits in, will dig it out!
Nice layout, will follow the progress with interest, I've just started a CZcams channel for an N Gauge layout so good luck with your channel for the future.
SettleCarlisle68 thanks for the comment, I’ll check your channel out soon - one thing I have found is filming what I am doing leaves me with less time to watch other videos! Cheers
Great results so far! Quite impressed with your traverse yard - maybe a feature video on lessons learned perhaps?
Thanks for the feedback, yes I will consider doing a video on the fiddle yard at some point, there seems to have been a fair bit of interest in it so far. Cheers
@@deansburytownmodelrailway5056 I second the request for a video. I'd be very interested in the wiring as I'm looking at doing something similar with my layout.
Hello there, good looking layout. For the disused farm, perhaps one of the fields could have been commandeered by the RAF during WW2 and was turned into an aero club of sorts following the war. I think the show jumping for horses (mentioned in previous comments) is a good idea, maybe include a blacksmiths for the horses shoes.
Thanks for the kind comment. You have reminded me that buried in a box I have a black smiths kit!
Paddocks need water trough, horse jumps?
I like the countryside and town, always good to see undulating levels
Thanks for the suggestions, and glad you like the hills 👍
The farm /paddocks need a Range Rover (for Dad), a horse or two and a travelling farrier with his mobile forge, anvil and "footrest", and a beat up Hilux utility, a couple of "pony clubbers" (girls) and a frustrated Dad.
Could you get a Hilux in the 60’s?
@@deansburytownmodelrailway5056 You could in Oz, but a Morris Minor would do, so long as it was beaten up.
