This is a Ewan Macall composition. He was an actor, singer of Scots ballads as only he could do, he composed The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face over the telephone for wife, Peggy Seeger to sing on the radio. His mind was a store house of long, Scots ballads. He and Peggy did radio shows on the BBC about the working folks, the end of whole industries-the herring and the whaling. Eliza also comes from generations of English singers & she learned to sing a ballad better than most. Her whole family were (and are) gifted musicians & singers. She plays with a variety of others and enters all realms of folk music, bringing old songs to new ears.
As an American who grew up on American folk music, I recently discovered the music of Eliza Carthy and her father Martin and her amazing mother Norma Waterson. Through the magic of Pandora and CZcams, I have listened to and witnessed her 20 plus years of growth as an artist in a few short months. She surrounds herself with wonderful talent, but is sublime as a solo artist or just jamming with an accordionist at a music festival. She just blows me away. I'm a huge (new) fan.
Beautifully said, Maureen. I saw her and the Wayward Band perform live last year. The first time I've seen her. I was moved to tears more than once during the show because musically it was so perfect. She is sublime. Such a huge talent. And largely unrecognized by the wider public.
@@sambrightwell3676 , Attending a live performance of Eliza Carthy is on my bucket list. The only other artists on that list are Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson.
When I was a child I wanted to grow up to be a vet. Now I am an adult and I want to grow up to be Eliza Carthy. Also nice to see Nick Cooke there. Saw him live with Kate Rusby last year and fell a little bit in love. He makes the accordion seems cool.
i love that "Come hither" look Eliza shoots atr the camera when she sings about "Dodgy Gear Box" You dont think this could be a metaphor for something rude, do you?
Brilliant! Love this - I love Eliza's music - can't understand an audience who don't react to such an exciting innovative performance - I do find folk audiences a little po faced at times Go Eliza - GO!
You've got a point about folk audiences but I must say that when I saw Eliza with The Wayward Band last year the whole venue was bouncing. The energy coming from the stage was completely contagious and even I was dancing.I just hope they tour again as I would love my son to see them.
Great stuff. Can't help wondering what Ewan MacColl would have thought of the arrangement though. Great man in many ways but a bit po faced about rocking it up, to say the least!

A touch of Tom Waits if I'm not mistaken
Interesting comparison - would never have made that connection but you're bloody right!
It always reminds me of the theme tune to Black Books...
Awesome music. But is the audience dead?
They are actually listening to the music perhaps, seems a dying art :)
Didn’t realise there was an audience😂
My you are getting so like your mum!Bit more sassy! Two for the price of one😂
