- In this video we're checking out Blancmange. We know nothing, really, about this band, except that there was a high demand for it this week. So, like another reaction channel says, we gotta give the people what they want (sorry RSR family). Enjoy!
P.S. - It was funny when we looked up a picture for the band at the end. First thing that came up was a dessert. :)

One of the greatest New Wave songs to come out the 80s. Truly one of my favorites. Glad you enjoyed it!
🎶 I'm up the bloody tree 🌳 ! 🎶
This record sounded absolutely amazing in a nightclub with the mechanized hand claps 👏 👏 ! Brilliant 12" ..so hypnotic.
Sure did every one danced no compitition either do your own thing dancing.
It still does :)
Haven't heard this in a while, always loved that Eastern vibe it has. Classic 80's pop, it really didn't get much better.
Danced my ass off to this at London's The Camden Palace nightclub circa 1982. Those were the best of times.
THANKS FOR THAT, CANT BELIEVE ITS OVER 40 YEARS AGO
thanks once again for the reaction this song just puts a smile on your face
A year earlier Heaven 17 released a banger track called 'Penthouse and Pavement' off the album with the same name
A dance staple during Derek's Mutant Disco on Wednesday nights at Moles Bath UK fall of '82. Love it!
Love this track. I bought the album that this came from, 'Happy Families', it's a great album
well she's hypnotised by it anywaze !! 👏🤟🤟
Another favourite of mine with an eastern flavour is "Govinda" by Kula Shaker. In fact Kula Shaker produced a few other good songs in the 90s, such as a great cover of Deep Purple's "Hush" and "Hey Dude" etc
Yeah, their cover of Hush is pretty cool.
I bought one blancmange 12 inch single in the 80s,
Because it's amazing amazing sounding .this played in the electro dance clubs montreal. They had a few great hits like this.
Don't tell me is a better song and waves by Blancmange.
Oh my! 'Waves' had totally been off my 📡! Thank you for mentioning it, Michael! 😀👍 I remember thinking it was by Ultravox, when I heard it for the first time 😄
For some reason I missed Waves when it was released, only discovering it in the last 5 years or so.
Don’t Tell Me has an exotic vibe, rather like this track!
@@jonathancole833 - For me, it was _this_ song that must've somehow gotten past me unnoticed at the time; But maybe it wasn't actually released as a Single in Germany (where I grew up)?! 'Blind Vision' was my first Blancmange impression 🙂
@@jonathancole833 - I'm unable to find any info about the German charts, but it's interesting that this song had reached #5 in the Australian ones but only #41 in NZ! (where I live now)
@@mightyV444 Blind Vision is a great song (and video). It reminds me a little of Fleetwood Mac's Tusk.
I haven't heard this one for years. One that you could never escape
I don’t think they were as prolific as Depeche Mode , but they had a good number of quality synth pop tunes . Blind Vision is a favorite as well as Don’t tell me.
This song takes me back.... watching the song performed on BBC 1 on Top of the Pops on a Thursday night.
They were amazing live too!
Reminds me of my travels in the middle East and North Africa, and the two years I spent in Jordan learning the language and culture.😁
''Gods Kitchen'' is another track of theirs worth checking out
"Waves" is a good one to try next.
Definitely a favorite on the dance floor back in the 80s..
Not middle eastern - from the Magrebe, North of Africa, Morocco to be precise (for the video). The tablas and sitar used in the song actuallly are from the Indian sub-continent.
Great reaction. Waves is also worth a listen. And they did a great cover of the day before you came by abba. Also feel me is a good track : )
ABBA let Blancmange use clips from the original video for The Day Before You Came in their own promo!
The singer always gave me David Byrne vibes .
Once again, thank you for your swift response! 👏
Loved your reaction!!! It’s a shame this song is not heard much these days! This was huge on MTV early in 1983.
Great song , great review .
I was 15 when this song was a hit. Takes me back to the Blue Light Discos in Melbourne. Fun, fun, fun
@@mightyV444 Ha ha, really? You're son liked hearing my friends and I screaming through that song? I think it was sugar in our system that made us do that. Some days at the studio were pretty long, and you can get bratty after a while. To some parents, Countdown was a daycare centre (or Youth centre) with rockstars, and Countdown staff had no problem laying down the law. Ian ''Molly'' Meldrum was rude to me a few times, and he even pointed at my face and told me not to look at him with that expression. He was like a mean school teacher. Sometimes I hated him, lol.
I'm surprised this song didn't reach you in Germany. It was a pretty big hit in Australia. The video got so much play on TV.
I'd heard this for the first time only last year! 😄 I've known several other of their songs for 40 years, though 😊
we wee doing the same in the adult clubs great dance track
@@Eskay1206 So true. I attended my first normal nite club when I turned 18 in 1985, and it was pretty much the same music. lol
Like how the woman is really getting into it more than the man i am on her same wavelength banging along with it makes you want to move but to be honest I was 19 years old when this came out and I really loved it then I am now 60 years old and still love music with lots of bass i am still a hardcore raver and still go to events
This band were good,very underestimated.
Classic new age 80's!
They used an awesome giant indian guitar makes the rhythm. .
Yea, I'm a big fan of the late Ravi Shankar and his daughter Anoushka.
Another great choice. May I suggest, for a slight Jamaican flavor, may I suggest "Gunning for the Buddha", by Shriekback.
There's a band i haven't heard in years, All Lined Up was always my favourite.
Ditto! Also Nemesis!
@@Kevvinm i had to look that one up thinking i didn't know it, but as soon as it started it came back.
I had definitely forgotten they made such whacky videos though!
After a big gap Blancmange are still going albeit with just Neil Arthur the singer (his writing partner not well enough to join him sadly). Am also reminded of Ever so lonely by Sheila Chandra from the same facade in the UK. Best wishes.
Great song
The 80's was the first decade to introduce the world to a music genre called "World Beat." Remember... Culturally, even with synth instrumentation. You could bring the outside (abroad) in. Making it your own.
Their album 'Happy Families' scraped into the Canadian top 100 at number 98.
@3:43 i luv how she picked up on that (i'm from Lancashire uk and the singer was born there) the shop keeper was like WTF is this !!! but i loved how he just sung it outloud ,couldnt care less.......,deffo wasnt lip synced !
Just good , straight up , early 80’s pop synth dance music , nuff said 👍🏴
Great tune and it looks like they have gone a found a 12" version
The radio edit cut the 'bloody' of course.
Bought this on 12" quite a sound at the time.
Think it was followed with Don't Tell Me which was better imho and I also bought, but that was it for me lol
Don’t Tell Me came a few songs later, in early ‘84 I think.
@@jonathancole833 fair enough, you have a better memory than me.. Those years are a blur now unfortunately
@9:08 the girls in video almost certainly wernt English , she had that Egyptian look and those EYES were chosen on purpose for sure !
Try The Sister of Mercy's 'Dominion/Mother Russia' which has a similar video filmed in and around Petra in Jordan
He looks bored stiff! 😆
Great track !
You tell me is another good one from them too
great track
She gets it, not so much he.
I could not be so quiet listening to this
Oh, and speaking of "barber": Maybe check out 'Cut Your Hair' by Pavement some time! Especially if you like 90's Alternative Rock 😊
'What about the voice of Geddy Lee?' 😃
@@CAdams6398 - Yes! How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy... 🤔 😄
What is actual theme of this song (Living on the Ceiling - Blancmange) ? Maybe an attempt not to be tied to this mortal material world ?
It’s about being high on drugs and the comedown
@@johnappleton5586 We needed to get rid of material dependence, right ?
Maverick Sabre please.. drifting or into nirvana ...pretty please
They do a brilliant version of abbas the day before you came
Great. Maybe we'll do one of our Wednesday - Who did it better videos.
Hello. Please could we have LIVING ON VIDEO by TRANS X, and PAPA'S GOT A BRAND NEW PIGBAG by PIGBAG? Thanks .
Also Jonathan Cole will be very happy about this video! 😁😉
Don't forget me mate! 🤔
@@CAdams6398 - I wouldn't! 😊 And what I meant was, he wasn't getting mentioned among those who'd requested this song! 😉
@@mightyV444 I read your comment before watching, so i wasn't aware his name was omitted. I should read the comments post song from now on! 😁 🫡
@@CAdams6398 - No worries! 😊 Have a great Sunday! 😀👍
@themightyv4271 And you my friend. 😊
For some reason I thought your name was Don , sorry Chris :-)
Good Eastern sound as you say. Also you had Ever so lonely by MunSoon has a different sound.
@@CAdams6398Is she no longer with us? I know that she had lost the use of her voice.
@jonathancole833 I apologise profusely mate. She is thankfully still with us! 🫢
@jonathancole833 She suffers with something called burning mouth syndrome, which sounds absolutely awful.
@@CAdams6398 not good poor thing.
@@CAdams6398 Yes, I remember reading about it a few years ago. Glad to know that she is still alive!
Can you guys react to
Lene Lovich New Toy Friday Night In The Video Room
It was a big hit in Australia and I really enjoyed it as a teeanger. Make an old Countdown kid happy. Thanx
MTV
Have you done , people are people by depeche mode? Would be a great choice.
I have a lot of time for Depeche Mode, but that track is lyrically awful. 'Enjoy The Silence' is surely a better choice!
@sick frog - I had to think of that song only yesterday when Cynthia was saying "People are people" in another video 😊
@@CAdams6398 - True, but I suspect our two Canadian friends here already know that one, plus a lot of DM's other songs, including 'People Are People' 😉
@@mightyV444 Most likely. I suppose we could have a 'Black Celebration'. 🖤
@Christian Adams it's simply because it was a ground breaking sound at the time .
Do your research,it's not middle east. Are you pretending to know what you're talking about?
Ugh, mindless beat head bopping. Pretending to enjoy it without actually cluing in what it's about. So clueless these two.
