It was about six or seven years ago when I got my first bass guitar, but I'd wanted to play for several years prior to that. Well, my dad said that he'd get me an electric guitar first, and then it would be easier to move onto 4 strings
I got the guitar, but unfortunatley, I had no passion for it, so it just collected dust in the corner. Couple years later I was given an acoustic bass guitar, and I've been running with it ever since, and only been moving faster with it since I discovered Rush and Coheed and Cambria.
It's really cool to see other people who felt the pull towards bass rather than guitar

Found you from Dave's channel and I just picked this vid at random. I was going to say you are so fortunate to have such amazing parents, but after watching the entire video I'll add ...they are fortunate to have such an amazing child as well. You are so grounded and down to earth (thank you parents😉)...and obviously talented. Anyone who can keep the same enthusiasm for music that they had at age 12, and combine discipline for learning and improving, deserves major success👏👏. I hope you get to whatever heights you aspire. Your love of what you do is inspiring to me, an old geezer lol. Best of luck and be well💖

Telling your mum you wanted to learn "bass" but saying it wrong, that's adorable :D I wish I could remember this kind of stuff from my childhood. My earliest memory about wanting to make music is maybe kind of weird, we were in the car and I was composing music in my head and thought it sounded amazing. So I knew I wanted to create music myself. I don't have any memory of when I decided I wanted to play guitar specifically.

That is a nice bass. Never been into slipknot so I've never seen it before, but I love the black chrome on it, always liked the look of black chrome on things. I could only just make out the grain in the wood, a bit too much reflection to see it well, but I could see it's there. For me wood grain and black are two wonderful elements to combine in a guitar body, whether black filler is applied to the grain and a lighter colour put over the top or a translucent black goes over the grain like on this one, it looks great. From an aesthetic perspective, Duff McKagan's bass is probably my favourite. I think your bass teacher was crying because he knew he wasn't going to be making much money lol. Love the sound of it at the end, effects and melody worked nice.

I had a similar experience to yours, however it was with Mark Hoppus from Blink-182, I loved music a lot at that point but Blink 182 was _THAT_ band that made me pickup a bass and start playing (followed by Nirvana, which exploded my love for music and to this day it is my favourite band ever, and Kurt was a lefty like me) I remember years ago when Mark Hoppus told the world he had cancer I was in a band and when I discovered the news I started crying (I was playing bass at that exact moment) and started jamming a couple of Blink songs after years of not listening to them (I even remember the songs I played, Life is so boring, Always and Story of a Lonely Guy) and I was shocked that I still remembered every song
13 years later (25 currently) I still play bass, it is part of my life along with everything music related, oh and also, I totally get the "the bass is too big" feeling because I'm a small dude (1.57m) and a lot of basses feel huge to me and hurt too lol

Hi Cici, thanks for your story, the bass is a beauty and I’m so glad you were inspired at such a young age and so sad that many inspirational musicians die so young, it makes you wonder what they would have done to further inspire you and others throughout their lives. Your tribute piece at the end was both musical and well played! I certainly didn’t progress as quickly as you when I started out!
Like you, I can remember the player that inspired me to take up bass, also a left handed person like me who learned right handed, I thought, great, I might be as good as him one day but sadly not so for me, the left handed bass would probably made all the difference!
I can’t play with a pick even now.
The inspiration came in 1984 on The Tube, it was Mark King of Level 42 playing a blistering solo on stage. I thought, if bass can sound like this and make me feel what I did, it’s the one to go for. The footage is readily available on CZcams. Mark was initially a drummer which explained his ease of syncopation and speed but more than the machine gun triplets which are ok and fast, his chords and harmonics along with the more melodic lines he played and still plays are what make you take notice.
Our inspirations are at opposite ends in terms of style and tone as yours is drop B and mine is standard but light gauge strings, the pull is the same. I finally managed to save up to buy my Jaydee Mark King bass in 1989 and still have it today. They are still made in Birmingham and are like yours, a thing of beauty which I won’t part with. I’m so glad you realised your calling to the bass so young and came on so quickly 😁

It's a bit of a shame at times that the mixes on Slipknot's music are so dense because it's hard to appreciate everyone individually except Corey. When you get isolated bits of any member, be it Craig, Sid, Jim, Paul or Vman, Chris or Michael, you feel like you're sneaking a cookie from the jar. That's part of why i love Gently and Iowa. In the intros, you get just Paul being Paul.

Wow thank you so much :) You can do it! The important thing is finding the way of learning that suits you best, remember that if someone has done it, it’s physically possible, which means there’s no reason you can’t reach that goal too :) Don’t compare yourself in a negative way to others who are further along the road than you, you’re exactly where you need to be at this moment in time, all the time. Also, play with confidence and conviction, I found that if I played tentatively and hesitated when going for notes, it took a lot longer to learn what I was trying to learn, both physically and mentally. Whereas if I just dove headfirst into the notes with conviction, even if I wasn’t 100% sure on where they were in my muscle memory yet, I found it not only sounded better, but it also helped it stick faster because my brain realised it was something important to be remembered, and it doesn’t matter if you hit wrong notes or make a mistake, you can always try again :)
I do have a couple of lesson videos if that’s if any interest too (with more on the way), one called Learning The Bass-ics, and the other is An Introduction To Slap Bass :) Most importantly, have fun and don’t pressure yourself!

@@CiciVonStrangelove I know this is an old post, but I have to say thank you. What an inspired and inspiring lesson...perhaps you just highlighted why my guitar journey has been so slow. Guitar is one of the few things in life that I desperately wanted to learn but struggled to do so. Maybe my deep desire is putting me into an anxious frame of mind, when I should just be letting it fly.
Also, this is a great story, and your family sounds lovely!

@@stevescuba1978 Ahh wow, thank you so much Steve :) I’m really happy it helped. I completely understand that, I still struggle with that sometimes when doing various things (even music!), it’s so easy to get caught up in that desperation and anxiety about wanting to do something. It seems like the more you fight to do something, the more things seem to work against you and the harder it gets, whereas if you just go with the flow things have a way of happening. Of course you have to put work in, and you need to want those things to a certain extent, but I just mean that if you can relax about it a bit it tends to come much more easily for some reason :) It doesn’t matter if you find yourself stuck in that cycle, even I do, the important thing is noticing that you’re in it and being aware of it, which will in itself, help you to get out of it :) and one last thing, there was a quote I heard although I don’t remember who said it at the moment, but it was “you can fail at doing what you don’t love, so you may as well try going what you do love”
