She's not kidding about most labs being obese. I work at a daycare and literally 99% of the labs are overweight. It's heartbreaking to see and whenever owners take responsibility it makes me happy bc that's what the good babies deserve.

probably doesn't help that the vast majority of labradors are missing a gene that regulates appetite; a friend of mine's labrador once got into his food bag, and ate so much he genuinely couldn't move because of it. he was fine, thankfully, but the poor guys need some of those genes bred back into them

Yup. It’s irritating. Growing up I had a female black lab who looked just like the lab in the video (minus the color). She lived to be like 13 or 14 years old, and was incredibly healthy and active her entire life. We never table fed her and she spent most of her time exploring the outdoors. It’s a shame so many lab owners chose to let their dogs get that way….

@@tomsuiteriii9742 Yes. My best friend has a Golden Retriever Lab mix and it honestly makes me sad since both breeds are espically Labs are so food driven. She isn't very obidient when it comes to food. No matter how big or little quantities of food you eat around her she automatically starts drooling!!! And everytime I visit her she gets even bigger (she is 5 as of now.) I've known her since she was a puppy and she has been food obsessed and driven her whole life. But she's very sweet

Same. I have a GSD that our vet commented he is a great weight and nice & lean. Nearly everyone else that comes across him says he looks too skinny. I think the general public, including many dog owners, do not understand what is healthy vs. overweight. It makes me sad.

Yes, we know all too well. Our latest labrador, Buster (black) could be in a dead sleep, but the second you opened the fridge door or opened the nachos packet, there he was. xD
Also, you say labradors are meant to be lean and muscular, but Buster was a Big Boi: an English version, we got his weight down to a decent level after we rescued him, but it had a habit of creeping back up if you weren't keeping an eye on him. But Packer is definetly a lot leaner compared to the Thunderous Thor.

I have an American Bully that I took in after she had been rejected by three previous "owners" due to her constant skin related problems. One of the first things I did, was to change her diet. No more cheap corn laden non-nutritious dog food that she'd been eating since puppyhood. I started feeding her a high protein no grain dog food which I supplemented with fresh carrots and an occasional slice or two of apple. It took a little less than three weeks before her skin and coat looked fabulous!

To this day I'm still trying to figure out how I managed to sneak out of my bedroom (because Zach was my shadow), head downstairs, and make part of my lunch. As soon as he heard the familiar sounds of the ham deli bag open, I heard a loud thud (he was asleep on my bed at the time), running footsteps down the stairs, and straight into the kitchen. He gave me the dirtiest of looks of 'you didn't wake me for this????'

So as soon as I get food for us humans my dog leaves the kitchen and goes on her bed till we finish. She doesn't hang around the kitchen table so no chance of scraps. And walked once a day off the leash to chase kangaroo's. She looked amazing till the day she died at 15. And it's not a hard thing to do.

Most of the time I wouldn't even look, just toss something over my shoulder. He would rarely miss it.

We try to walk her as often as we can, but since she HATES leashes with a passion, we tend to mostly make her do exercise in our backyard. She only has energy for an hour of play and then she’s chill the rest of the day.
Despite being the world’s biggest couch potato, she’s the skinniest one in our family. She’s incredibly small for a lab, and weighs only 55 pounds.

Well you could work against that if you would actually use them for their purpose: hunting. I know so many hunting Beagles and they all look fabulous like they're supposed to. Thats the reason why many hunting dogs can only be purchased when you're an active, licensed hunter in Germany xD . But I also see a lot of trainers that have like literally no clue. I've been to a trainer twice, and there were two Lab puppies, that were super chubby. And one of the owners told the trainer if she should feed less, because they were told (By their VET i might add) that their puppy was too fat. And the trainer seriously said: No! he is in perfect shape! Don't feed him less, vets don't learn nutrition and feeding habits in their studies! - And I was just like:.....excuse me wtf?! Never went there afterwards, as they were clearly absolute idiots. Poor puppy.

our labrador literally jumps up and eats cherry, plum, apricot, and pear from the tree and despite all our attempts she is always a little chubby. not the really round fat kind but despite a huge yard, the infinite playing and running with her friends - our cat and the neighbor's german shepherd puppy - she never runs out of energy nor gets into very fit shape. not even winter when she can't steal fruit from the garden🥺😫😆

everytime i see a video about labs/goldens being good family dogs, i think about our late family dog charlie. when my niece was born, he wasnt thrilled about being replaced as the baby of the family, but he was so sweet and tolerant with her. he would let her sit on his back, play with his ears and tail, and wrap him in blankets. he also did tummy time with her and would lay down next to her when she napped. i've never seen such a sweet, caring dog as charlie.

Seems like a lot of labs and bully breeds get skin allergies. My mom's dog Homer has some black lab and when he was younger he was really itchy. Shook the whole trailer we were living in at the time.
My mom ended up getting him some fish oil and we changed to a different food and now he's a lot better. We suspected a wheat allergy.
