    Listened to these in the dark of a car, my imagination sparking, riding back and forth to Houston in the 70's as a young teen, watching the lines disappear behind us, wondering what was ahead. I truly miss those days.

    My sister and Me listened to these programs growing up in Phoenix in the 70's. It can on in the evening before bedtime. She had a little stuffed animal dog radio. I had a sectional bed with 2 twin beds. We would listen to the program and she usually wanted to sleep in my bedroom after the show. I loved E.G. Marshall's narration and the creaking door! The shows were scary but also thought provoking .

      Scary but though-provoking indeed. I too listened to CBSRMT back in the 70's as a child along with other similar shows rebroadcast late at night such as Quiet, Please, Lights Out, X-1, Dimension X and even Black Mass. But although I had a younger brother I would listen to these solo, always in the dark, often on an old AM radio from the 60's, sometimes on a small battery-powered portable. Good times.

    This really made the Jules Verne story come alive for me. I remember reading it back in my youth. Well done CBSRMT and thanks Chilly Sunshine for a trip down memory lane for this bookworm.

    CBS RMT the last stand for classic radio...Everything is optical effects now-SOUND EFFECTS ARE JUST AS EFFECTIVE...Thanks for posting...

    • @michaelkottler
      @michaelkottler Před 3 lety

      Agreed. But sound effects and visual work are not mutually exclusive. They can work well individually or together and both are compelling. To say that everything today is visual ignores the great foley, musical, and voice-acting work done in, for example, audio-books that are actually like old-time radio plays w/music & sound FX along with the same great work done to enhance movies both live-action and animated, certain TV shows, and even games.

    Some have posted that this gave them satisfying closure re: Nemo, but IMO Nemo was reduced to a mere plot point. Mystery solved now I'll just quietly die in my submarine. Verne was like Wells, Lovecraft, Shelley et al a visionary & I felt Nemo deserved a more heroic finale. But thank you ChillySunshine, as always.

      There's another OTR episode i've come across twice now where two guys are washed up on an island in the pacific with giant crab monsters and such. (Wish i could tell you the program and the name of the episode; might be a Suspense, IIRC..?) In that one i think of the characters had flown bombers previously and, as the story develops, he laments to his fellow pilot re all the nuclear testing of the 50's. I think maybe he's the only one who survives in the end and they suspect he went a little mad when he relates his story after being rescued. ...But i've heard so many OTR shows now that they really start to blend together -- especially so on these ones where there were > 900 or even > 1,000 episodes in total.
      Can't say i ever saw your crab monster film Mr. Wilsonian, but sounds about right for something out of 50's or 60's sci-fi, lol. IINM, there was more than one giant crab sci-fi movie even...

    The 1st MT epi I've heard so far that I found wanting. Brave Nemo reduced to a plot convenience. A hurricane in March that blows them 7k miles from the East coast to South of Hawaii? Verne was brilliant, but this fell short IMO despite EG's best attempt to wrap it up philosophically. They can't all be zingers lol.
