      Don Knotts left the show after the 5th season because Andy told him (in the beginning) that the show was only gonna be on for five years, so in the fourth season Don started looking for work for when this show was over and ended up signing a contract with other TV companies, but when Don found out Andy was going to extend the show longer, Don offered to break his contracts if Andy was willing to give him a peace of ownership of the show, (Andy and his manager owned more than half rights of the show) when the offer was declined, well the rest we know as history.

    The thing that made Barney work so brilliantly was Andy for him to bounce off of. Without the chemistry of those two the show wouldn't have worked. Barney needed Andy's character to work and Andy as the anchor and straight man needed Barney to play straight to. Perfect balance.

      Andy was the straight man. That much is written into the script. The straight man is as old as comedy itself and the role is as important as the comedic role, because the straight man gives the comic something to play off of. It's not that Andy let Don be the comic. Don was hired to to be the comic.

    • @johndodge8999
      @johndodge8999 Před 2 lety

      @@GradyPhilpott I don’t believe that’s how it came down.
      Andy was planned as the comic talent before Don was even in the picture.

    • @GradyPhilpott
      @GradyPhilpott Před 2 lety

      @@johndodge8999 That may be true, but it's still written into the script. Who then would have been the straight man, if it was not the sheriff? I love how Andy Griffith, in discussing the genesis of TAGS, always gave credit to Don Knotts for the success of the show. He said that with Barney delivering the laughs and him playing straight man, it just clicked. How fortunate that Knotts had just been released from the Steve Allen Show when the pilot ran, and that he was watching TV that night and saw it. The next day he rang Andy up and said, “Hey, don’t you need a deputy?” The rest is sitcom history.

    I love all these clips of Barney Fife! The last one was probably one of the best because it showed how he wasn't afraid of those criminals who tried to bully and tease him. Most of the time Andy helped to keep him out of danger and trouble but this shows that Barney can stand up to people who dare try to disrespect him or his badge. He remembers what Andy told him about how the badge shows that you are the law and that people better respect that.

    I worked at a hospital in Arizona back in 2003, had a patient who was telling me she owned a restaurant “back in the day”, and “Otis, the town drunk would occasionally drive over from California on the weekends to patronize her restaurant. She would always try to comp his meal, but he would insist “No, No, I will sing for my supper”. And he did....And he was good!

The other day my 24 yo son was here and, of course, I had the AGS on, and I said “sorry, baby, you can change channels” and he said “No, mama, this is my childhood. This has always been in the background, it’s part of my childhood”. I’ve never been so proud 🥲

    This was good stuff, but you left out what I thought was Barney's finest moment of the series. It was the episode in which a publisher, who had a vendetta against Andy over a traffic ticket, tried to besmirch Andy in an article, and Andy was called to a hearing to address charges of malfeasance. The article featured some derogatory remarks that Barney unwittingly made about Andy, and he was called to the witness stand to explain what it was about. On hearing Barney's published statements, Andy is understandably disappointed and angry. But when Barney does an excellent job of exculpating Andy's actions on the witness stand, the hearing commissioner exonerates Andy of any wrongdoing.
    After the hearing ends, Barney approaches Andy, and with a somewhat feeling of guilt and shame, extends his hand his as a way of consolation. Andy, although initially angry at Barney for what he first thought was betrayal, in turn magnanimously shakes it, showing his admiration for his deputy. Truly one of the most touching moments in the history of the series.

    Andy has his back turned bc he's trying not to drop to floor laughing his head off! 🤣 Don Knotts--Comic genius. Knotts broke up Andy a bunch of times. When Knotts left the show to pursue a movie career IMO, Griffith stopped enjoying doing the show. Don Knotts could not be replaced! There was no one funnier or more likeable than Barney Fife! 💖❤😍😘
