    A retelling of one of my favorite childhood stories.
    Monkey meets the Buddha and is challenged to a contest of power. He flies to the end of the universe where he finds five golden pillars. After leaving his mark he returns to find just how small his power truly is in the grand scheme.

    As a kid, this was my first exposure to Buddhism. I remember, though, recognizing the Buddha as a religious figure and thinking it was goofy that they insisted on sanitizing him as "the Guardian."
    When people go on their little rants about how "overly sensitive" people are "nowadays" (and they're usually no older than twenty, anyway), it makes me chuckle to think how many parents would flip their lids over anything that was explicitly non-Christian. (How Mr. Satan became "Hercule," and how gods always became "celestial beings," and demons would be made "monsters" or "mutants.")

      Well, I do agree that them choosing "the guardian" as a title is goofy and they should have chosen a less generic one like "World Honored One"
      BUT in Buddhism Buddhahood is entirely different than Godhood for gods (or heavenly beings) are still trapped in the 6 paths while the buddha isn't. He wasn't an explanation for natural phenomeon and he didn't created the universe. So they wouldn't have to call him "god" in the first place.

    Dare I say how even if the CGI didn't date well , this seems like one of the better 90's to make use of bright, saturated, digitally done colours and seem 'ahead of it's time' w/the shadowing on characters reminding me of something from the mid 00's or onward if not a movie special. It might also be more apparent since the character designs of Susumu Matsushita have a distinct cartooniness to them which you don't really always see in anime.

      My dad tells me about this chapter in Journey to the West all the time, and he told me the reason the monkey couldn't escape Buddha's hand is because the monkey represents the mind. So while a great mind can make you powerful and take you and anywhere, into heaven, hell, and the end of space and time, you cannot reach what's outside your own mind. So if my dad's interpretation is any indication, yeah, actually; it is kind of deep.

    Buddha tells of his power. This does not mean he is arrogant. He only was stating fact. He presents to the monkey his infinite power, then shows monkey that monkey is an individual soul who must reflect upon its actions. Buddha knows that monkey will come to thank him for forcing him to be trapped, so that it would think out its morals, and become a superior creature than it was, by means of this. The monkey is very rude and has a small mindset. It is possible that Buddha knew that it was only by this means of trapping him for 500 years that the lower creature would eventually come to realize the light. Buddha loves him, so he is looking far to this best future. As well, Buddha's laughs are not insulting to monkey, or laughing in pleasure of how powerful he is, and what he can do to the monkey... no. He is laughing at how cute the monkey is right now.

      In this case the teaching of the Buddha is emptiness (Heart Sutra).
      "I EXIST EVERYWHERE AT THE SAME TIME". What exist everywhere at the same time ? EMPTYNESS !!!.
      For example : 2x2=4 (form) is also emptiness, billions of persons make this equation eveywhere at the same time, and if they dont make this equation, it becomes emptiness (form is emptyness, emptiness is form).
      At the place where is Buddha you can make 2x2=4, at the place where is Kango is can make this equation, Everywhre you go you are in the sphere of the Buddha knowledge.

      The main idea of author bring out this fight is for wukong to learn what beyond his physical and capable. Everything in this world had it own order, even when you jump out the three realms and out five element. But you will still within the order, no matter how much wukong try break the chain of order. There will be order that adept to what wukong done and will acount wukong into it. For example much later in the book, wukong still be beaten by forms of demon on his journey. Like a scorpion demon, wukong was defeated by it poison, but the scorpion was defeated by a low rank chciken god that was bully by wukong easily. The concept of Buddha was he understand the order within this three realms. Even he know he couldn't do anything over the chain. But the wisdom allow him to be enlightenment and had true peace with it. The idea wukong unable fly out from his hand it because that wuKong had the idea and concept of Buddha imprinted in himself. So even where or when ever wukong go, the Buddha will be with him. If wukong doesn't had the idea of Buddha within him, he will easily walk of from Buddha hand. It one of idea the author try present to reader. It quite cringe. But it truth in real life. For example when you lost into a maze of significant idea. Your mind will be played by the idea and haunted by it. The only way you have your overcome the concept, it either you remove the concept of you significant idea from your mind (it will come back to hunt you again in future)or made peace with it. If not your will be literally be in the hand of the idea.

    Hi, I found this video while looking for a tv show from 1979 called "Monkey" - where Monkey flew on his cloud and could not get further than Buddha's hand..... different show, same story?!!! Wow, I'm confused! When did this show air, and is it related to the 1979 show Monkey, if anyone knows. Thanks 😁👍

    • @1acroyear1
      @1acroyear1  Před 2 lety +5

      Yes, they're both adaptations of the chinese novel "Journey to the West", which is more or less the asian equivalent to the Iliad or The Odyssey. It's a literary classic about the monkey king and a buddhist monk traveling to India to retrieve a copy of the sutras and bring them back to china. It's based on an even older legend that dates to around the year 700 AD. Many animes are inspired by if not a straight up ripoff of Journey to the West.

    No where near as good as the 1970s live action version. Monkey peed, in addition to writing griffiti, on Buddha's fingers in that one! Also Monkey had more charm & wit in his pinky in that version than this version has in his entire body. Buddha was more likeable & believable too.

    • @MrAnsatsuken
      @MrAnsatsuken Před 8 lety +11

      What lot of westerners know as "Buddha" is actually a chinese deity called "Bhikku Hotei".
      "Hotei" can also be pronounced as "Butai" / "Budai".
      Hotei represents abundance (hence the "fat" appearance) and laughter.
      Because of the similarities between the names "Buddha" and "Budai" (along with the ignorance of the westerners when it comes to Buddhism), people started mistaking Hotei (Budai) with Siddharta Gautama (Buddha).
      As you might have guessed, Siddharta, Buddha, wasn't bald, nor fat, nor wasn't he laughing all the time.
      That's it.
