Grooming has a somewhat different meaning in this case. It refers to a technique abusers use to slowly, slowly break down their victims’ barriers: to build trust, dependence.. That notorious football coach Jerry Sandusky used his charity for at-risk youth to molest children; he’s in jail after being charged with 52 counts of sexual abuse of young boys. Priests use the same methods, as do these awful gymnastics coaches convicted of abusing girls. It’s just not easy, really. You might think a young woman can just say no, but the young especially are often naive and innocent: the perps know and count on this.

You don't have to know what it is. You just have to listen to that voice. When you get that sensation, you stay the hell away from these individuals. You don't owe them any explanation. They are experts at grooming and manipulating people, especially young people, although some can even manipulate mature, intelligent adults. This inner guidance is priceless. When I was in my late teens I had a job as a mini-cab dispatcher. One of the cab owners, perhaps in his 70s, invited three of us girls to spend an afternoon on his farm. He was a sort of grandfather to us so we didn't hesitate to say yes. Once on the farm he and two other men, about his age, offered us alcoholic beverages. When two of us declined we were sent off to go horse riding. We seemed to have come back a bit earlier than expected because we caught the three old b******s all over the third girl, who was by then so drunk (and perhaps drugged as well) that she could barely stand on her feet. I couldn't believe I had been targeted because I thought these things only happened to pretty girls. How naive I was. I never told anyone at the time because of the shame. I don't think the girl who got all the abuse did either.

The pain in her voice all these year later is so heartbreaking!! This women has suffered a life long trauma because of this POS. However, I'm wondering if I missed the part on how and why she was at his ranch to begin with?? I know she said she thought it was a "student thing", if that was the case why weren't her parents more involved? Why did her mother, father or both let their child go unchaperoned with 2 adults into the middle of nowhere, for reasons nobody seemed to be clear about? To be very clear, I'm not victim blaming AT ALL, she was a young girl and needed to be protected. It seems like a lot of people let this girl down.
