      +Madame Poovie 2% of bad priests? Are you serious or just in total denial? Just in Boston alone there were 240 and the heads of the church protected them all despite being aware of the rapes they had committed. Take a guess why the church has had to pay ten's of millions of dollars to victims and why, even in Ireland, people have left the church in droves due to the same thing happening there.

      If the journalists didn't make money from taking the child's side then the story would not have been told. If the lawyers didn't make money they would not have helped. If the movie makers didn't make money the film would not have been made. If some of those who knew what was going on had spoken up then they would have lost their job or risked their next promotion so they chose not to help. It is a reality that support usually goes to the highest bidder.

      +Madame Poovie I still think you are missing the point. This is a story of how investigative journalism is still very important, the strategies they took, the impact news can still have... whatever the topic or subject they are reporting on. Tell me, if it was a spotlight on finding out how many toxic chemicals are in our food and the consequential shut down of many factories (assume it's true), would you be pissed or going "YEAH!!! This story needs to be told!" Be honest :) By the way, there probably ARE stories of sex abuse in many churches. This one just happened to hit the world in a greater way. Maybe blame the reporters for those cases for not writing the stories in a compelling enough way? Or perhaps, for not digging deep enough to get others to care.

    • @katehu7194
      @katehu7194 Před 8 lety +2

      +Madame Poovie To be honest, going after the Catholic Church would have stirred more controversy...and that is kind of the business side of journalism (media/news) right? To make headlines that get people talking? I think Catholicism just happens to be one of the really BIG religions. If it was the Protestant churches... eh, how big is that population again? And, hello, it was the BOSTON Globe. Boston? Catholicism? Which religious group do you think makes the most sense to write about for a local big paper? Your readers want something to relate to. The whole 'why does this matter to me' story hits much harder when the scandal is taking place in your backyard.
      News is a double edged sword: it thrives on making major headlines because people want to know and that's just how the people in the media business feed themselves. The service is to inform and inform they do. Don't take it personally :)

    This movie is so personal and is a story worth telling. At my own church (although I no longer am actually a part of it), a priest I knew my whole childhood was accused of sexually abusing children a few years ago. Everyone who went to the church defended him and even started a go-fund me to support his legal defense. The chichi tried to silence it, the people were unwilling to accept the truth, and the victims suffered even after coming forward. These things still happen and will keep happening unless good people use their voices and power to speak out and help. Children everyday are taken advantage of by those who have power in there life and they dont know how to say no, they can't. Movies like this are important, but actions taken after the knowledge obtained from watching it is more important

    • @Psychohippydude
      @Psychohippydude Před rokem +7

      No words can express the pain of those victims, it’s just so sad. On occasion priests are falsely accused of sexual abuse, but I believe you - I hope that the guilty priest didn’t get away with his crime. And even more I hope the victims have the support they need to live well without shame or anguish. Honestly, your story is tears to my eyes -how horrendous are these atrocities! And how long must children have to suffer in silence? I am so glad you took courage to share your story about this priest and what happened after.
      Years ago, I was in an airport overnight waiting for my connecting flight and I met a man my age. When I mentioned I was training to be a Catholic priest, he mentioned this film which his uncle had showed him. Naively, and stupidly, I became a little defensive. The course of the conversation continued in a friendly manner, for about an hour, but when I left for a few moments and came back he had gone without saying goodbye. I always wondered if his sudden departure had something to do with the way I dismissed the impact this film made on him. It could have been that he had to rush to catch a flight, but my gut always told me otherwise…
      Since then, as part of my training we have had a lot of education about the impacts of abuse and how to safeguard against it. Today is my last training day for it and, as I read parts of the 2018 report from Philadelphia, I remembered this film and that man. I feel sad reading the report, watching this trailer for the first time, and imagining all the pain that I will never really know, but grateful too: the man in the airport all those years ago, whose name I forget, communicated to me where I was wrong by following his conscience and parting my company.
      You say it well: these things are still real today and still happen. Children will go where we decide to lead them because they are only beginning to learn how to choose for themselves. For their sake, all of us must know how to speak out, pray for the courage to do just that, and help victims reclaim their voice.

I'm a Catholic (non practising) and have worked in national newspapers, so the film combined two of the things that define me. The film shows journalism at its very best and the Catholic Church at its very worst. The Globe and its superb Spotlight team are to be praised as are the makers of the film and the actors in it. The Church is to be condemned, as are the police, the governing administrations, the judiciary, and those parish members who turned a blind eye or who actively enabled these crimes to happen.

    So glad to see Michael Keaton back. The younger generation needs to see his older movies to get an appreciation for what a great comedic actor he was & how great comedic actors are great actors period, in dramatic roles or action, suspense whatever. He has great range & has been in some awesome movies with other great actors. Like Tom Hanks he started off being in comedies than branched out. He did Night Shift, Mr.Mom & then Batman & a ton of others with equally talented co-stars. I just love him as an actor. It is time he got some recognition for being so talented.,

It saddened me watching this movie hearing the accounts of people saying they can't ever go back to the church because of this or it has tarnished the image because as Stephen colbert put it best "that for so many people out there it actually sullied the place that would have been a solace for the kind of heartbreak or psychic damage created by the immediate abuse of the priests or the people who now when they go into a church feel guilty for feeling like they let this happen"

      "Player" with all the respect, it is one thing someone to punch you, and it is another thing someone to brainwash you for 10 years and sexually take advantage. I know both things are not good, but what I went through is way bigger than just a punch. To the point, not only that the churches new he had sexual problems. None of those people came to me to even ask me (while he was still with me) if I was okay. At list to check if he has done anything to me, since I was living with him. Any how! I will say this, all the big corporations "Churches" are not what they are saying they are. Let me say this! I am not against God and His church, I am against Evil doers. The Evil one is is really good at working from inside-out. This is exactly what happens with many many many big churches in America and around the world. I would even like to say that is with all big churches around the world. Lastly, people know that they can make a lot of money from using the Bible so they open company named Church. Using Jesus' name to make money and use people. Once again, please do not compare the punch with (what you call it) "Mexican kid punched me" because this situation is totally different. one punch is not the same as sexual abuse and brainwashing!
      Thank you for your comment above!

    It’s important to remember this film is based on the work these journalists did several years prior to the screenplay being written. By now, this kind of “investigative journalism” hardly exists and I don’t think there is any way to resuscitate it.

I miss God immensely and the community but I could never forget what those priests did, and what church did (and does to this day) to hide it all.

      The abuses are horrible and I almost left the church cause of it. But if I believe the church is truly established by Jesus, how could I leave Jesus because of Judas

      Of course XTC aren't singing it in the trailer but it's definitely an effective use of the song, since loss of faith is a big theme in the movie.

    I didn’t shed a tear during this film till I saw my city on the list. I saw this in theaters and I came home and my parents asked how it was…all I could say was we couldn’t tell my late Grandma about this film. I also said there’s no way this movie would win an award-I was THRILLED when it won Best Picture

    How could anyone still call themselves Catholic and support The Church after this? How!?

      Because we still call our selves Americans even after learning that the American politicians are supporting child trafficking.
