  • While it may be of huge benefit to airlines, the concept of long-haul narrowbody flights have long been controversial among passengers. Whether fair or not, many argue that they're less comfortable than widebodies, although new technology plays a vital role in making cabins feel more spacious.
Traveling Long-haul with single-aisle aircraft is an intriguing concept economically. While a narrowbody has a far lower trip cost than a widebody, they have a higher seat-mile cost, higher cost per seat, and fewer seats to fill. The balance depends partly on the degree of premium passengers or lack of competition, as well as the market's ability to pay higher fares to offset higher seat costs.
In today’s video, let’s examine which airlines are deploying the 737 max narrowbody on long-haul services…

Flew with Copa Airlines from Asunción, Paraguay via Panama City to Mexico City on 737-800. Even with a nominal 32 inch seat pitch the almost 7 hours between ASU and PTY was near torture, because it was near impossible to reach my bag under the seat in front of me with that seat upright. When that seat reclined it became claustrophobic. And on the return flight I got a claustrophobic panic attack at the start of the meal service and had to be moved to the aft galley for recovery. From what I've seen Icelandair's 737MAX cabin is actually really nice, would totally be fine spending 8hrs on one. They're configured for long-haul with power outlets and large IFE displays.
I've been on a 757 for 7hrs (KEF-MSP on Delta) and the experience felt no different from a wide body.
On the contrary probably my most miserable flight experience was 9hrs in economy on a United B772 with 10-across seating. Would take a narrow body over that any day.

Good article. Yes, narrowbody 'medium-haul' is here for the future. Obviously this is a market for passengers without much hold luggage or cargo, too. Smaller aircraft are actually quite popular for many factors such as less 'queuing' at check-in, boarding, disembarking etc., A typical LR narrowbody only requires about 4 cabin-crew and 2 pilots for up to 200 passengers.

With densification of wide body aircraft (9 seats in 787, 10 i 777 etc), the narrowbody and old 767 now sport more comfortable and wider seats than the new widebodies. The one problem with narrowbodies is galley. For long hauls, widebodies are generally able of 2 hot meals, not narrowbodies. (though 2 hot meals are now limited to only true log hauls, not trans-atlantic).

On 22 occasions, the aircraft's flight control system failed, 42 incidents involved equipment malfunctions, and on at least 40 occasions, pilots chose not to fly the MAXs until identified issues were fixed. they already fly from coast to coast with them and to South America. They loved the 757 to South America and Hawaii before getting ride of them and many still use A321 and 737-900 on 5+ hour trips. I'm lucky to start from DFW so almost all of the places I want to go are less than 4 hours from there.

    A321? Why not? 737 MAX? DEFINITELY NOT! A330, 777, or 787? YES!!!

I am not sure why flying on a single aisle aircraft on a non stop long haul (up to 8 hrs) flight is any different to a twin aisle aircraft. I think it is to many softies have got use to flying on twin aisle aircraft.

The claim that narrow bodies have a higher seat mile cost is blatantly false! Why do you think the airlines are all going to single aisles? It's certainly not because they cost more! The A320neos and 737maxes can get over 100mpg/seat mile. The 787 and A350 can get close, but those planes are 3-4 times the cost of a narrowbody with like 50% more seats or less. It's blatantly obvious the narrowbodies are much cheaper to operate.
