When you use both of the solenoids it makes it sound like a thunderbolt 1000 and when the solenoids are off it sounds like a thunderbolt 1000T and that's why I think 1003's are awesome
@turbocountry No there isn't any protection needed. Wind blowing into the horn doesn't do anything to the siren. There is a slip band in the rotator to allow the horn to slip in it's rotation if the wind is strong enough.
Thank you for sharing! I was curious how an old electromechanical siren achieved an alternating tone. Apparently it's far more simple than I could have imagined :P
Danielle Tirpkoff Yup. I agree, but sadly here in the Floridian panhandle, where most Floridian tornados form, we have no sirens. The closest thing we have is a modulator that doesn’t have it’s signals because it’s being used for the big voice system.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the solenoid on the left opens and the one on the right closes to make the low pitch, and the opposite happens to make the high pitch?
Just curious, do solenoids get hot being constantly activated, I would assume they wouldn’t as that’s what they’re designed to do but I’m not sure, also probably the first comment you’ve seen in quite a while for this old vid
how did you obtain a thunderbolt? i would like to get my hands on one for my own personal reasons, like an alarm clock that would actually get me out of bed, or something. *cough* neighborhood prank *cough cough*
Shepherd Wolf You can get them out of siren graveyards, a lot are from West Shore Services, but that is in Michigan and I’m not traveling 12 hours to get a siren. I’ll probably get one out of the Birmingham siren graveyard or take the 1000 off of Mobile’s hands since they are not repairing it and it’s in pretty bad shape and will likely be replaced soon. Our city doesn’t have a siren system and we just had a tornado out of s tornado season here and they still are not considering it (I’m not surprised, they make us special needs students wake up at 4am, sometimes even 3am to catch our bus, Every. Freaking. Day.)
If you can get to West shore services in Michigan, they have a bounty of thunderbolts there. A complete working setup (including blower and controls) will set you back $800, probably cheaper if you don't get a blower or anything like that.
Where do you live? You really should choose a snazzy name for your siren restoration business like "Dallas County Choppers" or wherever you live! :) Put the two-wheeled variety of "choppers" to shame.
1:01 what a nice pulse
Agree
ΗΟNΞY I agree! Same as Susan
nice. like the startup sound of the chopper motor.
Hi bsp
NO WAY!
Hi bsp
Here, you can see siren kiddies foaming over bsp. We have to be real quiet we don't wanna make the children fight.
Omg hi bsp
0:42 I like the sound of when you started the chopper motor!
Sounds like 1003 hit puberty finally
exactly the sound i used to hear in the early eighties as a kid sometimes late at night and would wonder where it came from.thanks for posting
Well, the blower was off on this one, so it probably sounded like this czcams.com/video/mvUFxbAqecI/video.html
Most likely a fire station
When you use both of the solenoids it makes it sound like a thunderbolt 1000 and when the solenoids are off it sounds like a thunderbolt 1000T and that's why I think 1003's are awesome
from a distance (eg on a pole) with the solenoids shut you would hear nothing, as there is not enough air to make a loud enough sound

Wow. I’ve never seen this video in a while. I still remember watching this when I first got into sirens
love the 2 tone, thanks for the post
0:50
That should be a new tone, the Hi-Lo Pulse
imagine the dual tone westminster chiimes that the siratone has, but on a thunderbolt
@@manitoba-op4jx Just need 2 more notes and you could do that...
Or just slow hi lo
Silverstreet did something like that when one solenoid wasn't working properly so It went like "Hi Lo Hi- Hi Lo Hi- Hi Lo Hi-"
@@BlizzardRoad Yeah I remember that
I loved that sequence form :51-:54 :D
i like the shut down sound of sirens
Galaxy guy you mean wind down?
AAAAAHHHH the T-bolt. This thing is the best
EarthMonster260Studios It sure is! The T-bolt is the best!

its amazing how Quite the Siren is with both Dampers Closed...nice Demostration.

Sounds great even without the blower running👍👍😀😀❗❗
A very good demonstration
Sound looks nice 👍👍👍
FurgoDoes Does solenoids snap with various noises?
That is awesome!!!
Yes. The solenoids only close when power is applied to them.
Sailor Jupiter / Lita = 5/6 port Thunderbolt 1003
I recommend taking notes during this video 📝 it helps 😁👍
That was cool
thats awesome!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the solenoid on the left opens and the one on the right closes to make the low pitch, and the opposite happens to make the high pitch?
What!??????
Nice hi-lo
where'd you ger the thunderbolt?
i agree with this guy

v
aval1998 Same here
That is so cool
That is very interesting :)
Cool vid. I did not know that the bar across the horn was either shaped like that or controlled the hi-lo signal.
Imagine a Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1003 doing a French Fire Sound.
The chopper sounds like it's from a 2/3T22.
Divide 12 and 10 by 2. 6 and 5. 5/6 is the port.
Just curious, do solenoids get hot being constantly activated, I would assume they wouldn’t as that’s what they’re designed to do but I’m not sure, also probably the first comment you’ve seen in quite a while for this old vid
When you messed around with the solenoids it was kinda funny
I guess you mean the horn? Yes it does but it's not mounted to anything so I can't run the rotator.
it would sound awesome if you are able to do the hi lo cycle while its winding down
any way to get the solenoid box and add it to a t-bolt 1001?
I hope you are smarter after 10 whole ass years
Can I put this on my Facebook
nice video i like it
A solenoid on a 1003 right by my house is stuck open.
Lorin Hatch so that just makes pulse signal
xXCosboVideoOwnerXx no it sounds like "hi-both-hi-both"
c3h8O i believe so
SO this is how Fire Allert works!
how did you obtain a thunderbolt? i would like to get my hands on one for my own personal reasons, like an alarm clock that would actually get me out of bed, or something. *cough* neighborhood prank *cough cough*
I know this is from 10 years ago but you’d be arrested for that
Thanks for the solenoid demo! Is there a name for the tone for when BOTH solenoids open & shut simultaneously?
Pulse signal
And under which circumstances is it used?
@@Zickcermacity just a warning of some kind
@@Zickcermacity it's purpose is for nuclear accidents. However, it could also be used as a fire signal.
They don't just sound off for tornadoes. it sounds off for something like hail, storms, hurricanes, strong winds, etcetera.
where can you buy 1 of these things?
That's a good question.

alertec2202 cool thanks I will check it out
WOW!!!! Im going to michigan to do that. i probably dont need a blower THATS REALLY CHEAP FOR A SIREN!
Sans The Skeleton It costs more than that. Trust me I had a friend who bought a full set up.
Sirens & Aviation How much was it and HOW DID HE GET IT?!?!?!?
Cool.
