    Australian Holistic Vet and Registered Avian Vet Specialist bring you a fascinating video clip of a remarkably calm Lovebird calmed by intent by Dr Perry as he reshapes its very overgrown deformed upper beak. The lovebird is one of a pair that have remained otherwise healthy despite chronic PBFD Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease. Dr Ross Perry consults about Caring for Birds in Sickness and Health at Cromer on Sydney's Northern Beaches near Dee Why.

      Wonderful❣️ It would be so great to have you trim the beaks of my rescue birds who are unable to eat without me handfeeding them, due to having their upper beaks bitten very short, so not aligning with lower. I also handfeed one whose upper beak is overgrown, with hooked tip. I love how you calm them with intention.
      Do you think it would be possible for me to help their alignment so they can eat, by filing a tiny bit at a time or with a pumice stone? There is no avian vet near me.

    Great work! You have a way with birds. I rescued a lovebird without a beak last year and we had a temporary, artificial beak attached so he could continue to function and now his real beak is finally growing in (Very exciting! His temperament is completely shifting to a much happier, healthier bird) so we are expecting to need a beak trim soon and are looking for a local avian vet. I love that you uploaded this helpful reference video so I know what to expect. Thanks!

    I can of imagine the pain, poor baby. I had my nail yanked out a few days ago. And the pain made unbearable to walk. So, I had to stay home. :( It wasn't surgery, but it was like breaking a beak. T-T

    • @DoctorRossPerry
      @DoctorRossPerry  Před 7 lety +7

      If I hadn't invoked/used calming etc. energy transmission, there could have been a lot of pain, yet because I did, there was not. If you ever create the opportunity to visit John of God at Casa de Dom Inacio in Abadinania, Brazil, do so, and you will be utterly amazed at what can be done , including surgery, without drugs or regular anaesthesia on people standing up, with minimal or no pain. John of God illustrates what is possible. I aspire to apply some of the techniques to benefit birds in my care. Dr Ross Perry

    Yes it can be done. e especaillly when young, corrective sideways pressure on both beasks 5-10 x a day is one way. I usually glue a strip of semirigid pastic to the lower beak to prevent the upper beak sliding across and sometimes need to trim the beaks also. See a bird specialist for guidance. Dr Ross Perry

  • @DoctorRossPerry
    @DoctorRossPerry  Před 14 lety +1

    Yes, that sometimes helps but not usually if the birds have PBFD. The birds do have some rocks. however I will try some smooth ones as you suggest and see what happens. They also have lots of branches etc to bite. Many lovebirds with PBFDrecover over 1-2 moults, including beak deformities, with just good nutrition. However some like these have the disease for years. • @DoctorRossPerry
    @DoctorRossPerry  Před 12 lety

    @Turkforlife123 It is similar to trimming nails and claws, The beaks are sensitive obviously for manipulating seeds and food etc. The beaks have bone with blood vessels and nerves and a network of these around the bone under the hard keratin. You can cut, file, dremel nails and beaks without causing pain. If you cut or grind or split too far then acute pain can result.

    That's very impressive that you're able to keep it so calm! So I have a question about nail growth on my kakariki, I have to give him (at least I think it's a him) monthly nail trims, or they will overgrow, his beak stays fine, but he also has very long moults, I'm talking months, I spray him for mites, and his diet is fantastic, pellets, a few seeds, sprouted and not, plenty of veg, a little fruit, some nuts (mostly almonds, and his favourite food is chilli peppers, it's the same diet my conure has, they share a cage (but are usually out), and the conure has no similar problems, in fact I've never had to trim his nails! Both eat and drink well and bath daily, I know kakarikis are known for their long moults and do have longer nails, but I am curious as to what's going on! Any ideas? Is it worth a consult with my vet?

    • @DoctorRossPerry
      @DoctorRossPerry  Před 4 lety

      Are his nails growing straight curved or twisted curved? If you have a decent vet take him there next time his nails need trimming and/or send me a series of macro photos of them. Ross

    When it was hatched, it had a full beak. I believe the parents nails got to it and made a loss. I can send you a photo of my bird if you've an email address. I just want to know if it will ever grow back, it does eat on his own, people don't believe how a bird with a half upper beak can eat and munch hard seeds and vegetables. I may have a couple other problems with other canaries. Scaly legs.

    I would still encourage people who see this video to LET THEIR VET DO THIS until (and if) your avian vet TRAINS YOU in how to do it. It is not simply just clipping down the beak like a toenail. Even though Dr.Perry makes it look so easy. Though it seems effortless as we watch, he takes great care to hold the bird gently and even the pressure on his head and body without harming him. It has to be done gently and with great precision and the force used is applied in a precise way through several steps. Don't just go out and get cuticle podiatry clippers for your bird without your vet SHOWING YOU how to use them on your bird....or just have the vet do it. If you crack the beak on these birds things will be much worse and horribly painful for your bird.

    • @DoctorRossPerry
      @DoctorRossPerry  Před 8 lety +1

      +MAN CAVE NO.1 Yes, there is wisdom in your comments for those who have access to avian vets. However, many around the world do not have this luxury and so I do my best to demonstrate what can be done, at least sometimes. No drugs and no dope used to calm this lovebird. All done with empathy, love and gratitude, focused intent to calm and reassure and knowledge and experience in holding and restraining and positioning and supporting the beak for use with these cuticle clippers. It takes or took me lots of practice, and faith that it can be done. I suspect that I also move out of predominately beta brain wave to alpha and perhaps some theta, as in meditation etc. It is more difficult to do this "on show", and even more so if doubting thomases or negative or agitated mindsets are present.

      Vaccinations aren't required especially if your tiel won't be around other birds. As for wing trims, those are also optional if you allow your tiel time outside the cage. I personally trim because I don't want my bird flying around the house and possibly crashing into something. Trimming will prevent them from flying too high. I trim my tiel's claws with a small filer. Beak trims aren't necessary if you are giving them things to chew on like small wood chips and if the tiel doesn't have a disease that expedites beak growth.

    There are many different causes of Scissor bill. Your African Grey is likely to need regular beak trimming by an avian vet until you have learnt to shape the beaks yourself. To correct the underlying malalignment of the jaw your bird is likely to need a tension splint or prosthesis attached to realign the beaks towards normal. Do you live in Australia? Is one nostril blocked, Has your bird been tested for PBFDcircovirusdotcom?

      +Happy Lollipops YAY Most birds don't need a beak trim I believe.
      Just read up on it. I think it is important to get a book about parrots when you have them, they are complicated creatures.
      I have 2 parrots and I supply them with wooden baskets, but the wood needs to be untreated.They love to bite the baskets into small toothpicks.
      I buy the baskets used. I make sure that the baskets are clean looking and then I still have to soak them in the bathtub for a few hours.
      A lot of basket were used in the bathroom I think and who knows what has been spilled in them. Anyway,
      then I let the baskets dry and give them to my parrots.
      They love to bite the baskets into shreds.
      It makes them so happy.
      So, if you want a parrot that is happy or and if you have a parrot with a beak that grows to big, try that.
      Please don't try to cut beaks on your own as that can be dangerous for the bird I
      was told by a good source.

      In my opinion the beak overgrows like this due to a combination of diseases induced by psittacine beak and feather disease circovirus infection and the concurrent induced auto-immune disease that affect many organs of the body including the liver and beak germinal epithelium from where it grows. If you put the amount of time and loving care that I have with my show birds, then you'd know that your birds would trust you. It causes them no pain whatsoever if done with care. They need it done to eat, drink, and preen properly. It is no different than you or I trimming our own nails.

  • @DoctorRossPerry
    @DoctorRossPerry  Před 11 lety

    If a budgie's beak tip is brown, it is usually the result of an old interlaminal haemorrage. This can be the result of a crash injury, a crush injury from a bite from another bird or it can be associated with tumours and infections affecting the deep layers of the growing beak. However the most common cause is one or more chronic diseases affecting the liver such as viral infections, accumulated chemical and mycotoxin poisons, and vitamin K deficiency. See GoldCoastBirdVet dotcom 4 remote help.

      Even toenail trims, they don`t like, again, if they have gravel, nails do not need to be trimmed, as w/ beak trim, is considered a no-no, they already rub their beaks against rough edges to clean & shape their beaks.

    • @ellyardon7356
      @ellyardon7356 Před 6 lety

      Gravel is not good for birds and if they get sick they can eat to much gravel and things can get worse quickly. Sand paper is also a horrible choice. Fortunately; near my home there's a bird specialty shop where they do a wonderful job on wings and bird claws. There are also various Vets who specialize in aviary around here.
