Many of you subscribed to my channel from watching an aircraft similar to this. The Mosquito Helicopter. The video of the Mosquito helicopter • Mosquito XET Turbine. ...
Here we have another single seater helicopter that is also turbine powered. There are differences between both helicopters, which we will cover in the video. A big factor with these homebuilt helicopters is the fact that You don't need to get a helicopter license to fly one. Although it is highly recommended that you receive proper training and get a license. Like the Mosquito, the Helicycle is also considered an experimental aircraft by the FAA.

A little background info. This helo was designed by B. J. Schram the guy who started Rotorway. You might think this design pre-dates the Rotorway Exec but you would be wrong. This helicopter was designed to fix everything he didn't like about the Exec and has a better safety record. Only a crazy person would fly this without training first. I would not allow someone to fly solo without first demonstrating full autorotation to the ground without power along with some basic maneuvers. The objective is to cut your dual rental time by doing as little dual as possible. Then with your solo endorsement you fly the hell out of the helicycle and then come back to finish off the requirements for the license. Don't forget you can also burn Number 2 Diesel without any changes to the fuel system. That's way cheaper than Jet A. That means you can fly to the nearest gas station for fuel with prior approval of the store owner.

I've been maintaining civil helicopters for 30+ years R22 through B224. Turbine powered or not, what is important is how well a design autorotates. I prefer the B214 any day. Have you ever noticed most kit manufacturers promo videos don't show the helicopter cruising along at 3,000' AGL and enter a full power off autorotation. It's a pilot with allot of skill, low to the ground. Take lessons on a type certificated helicopter and rent or buy the same.

You want your knees slightly bent. One, it helps you fly in a more stabilized position (cyclic/right arm resting on your thigh) which allows you to fly much smoother than arm in the air. Two, in the event of a harder than normal landing, better to have the legs slightly bent.

Very interesting. I don't particularly care for helicopters but that turbine in an aircraft at cheap LSA price confirms that there is no reason we don't have similar power turbofans. Keep in mind that the single seater Sharp DR90 Nemesis did 500km/h at sea level with 100HP so imagine 160HP jet at high altitude in a sleek light plane. And a turbofan combined with speed and altitude is actually efficient enough to match the best prop pistons for fuel economy. Something people don't realize. The Virgin Atlantic Globalflyer flew 41467km without refueling for 77 hours using an off the shelf FJ44 Williams turbofan engine. I'd like to see a Cessna 172 do that. Average speed was 540km/h. Imagine if we could get 1/10 that range in an LSA size plane. That's transatlantic. That's playing with the big boys.

Hey MojoGrip, if you go check out another helicopter you might want to check and see how much peddle travel there is. When you were commenting on the lack of room and bent knees that may go away if you are pressing the pedal all the way which may be something you need to do to keep from crashing. Even if you have an adjustable seat like I had in the Cessna 172 I used to fly, you never, never, never, started or attempted to fly an aircraft without making sure you could comfortably press the pedals all the way to the bottom of their travel. I hope you get one some day if that is really in your blood and ability. God Bless

  • @andrewjansen9702

Advantage: a helicopter can hover and take off vertically.
Disadvantage: the spinning of the blades isn’t enough to arrest your fall and act as an air brake if things go awry.
Advantage: you don’t need s long runway and lots of forward air speed to take off and land.
Disadvantage price: for the price of one chopper you can probably buy a fleet of autogyros,
Advantage: flying a chopper is pretty much straightforward, and less of a balancing act like in an autogyro.
    Disadvantage: these things weigh more
Don’t get me started on fuel system comparisons!

Fun design and great video!

A few things need explanation here -
    1. Endurance is not 2 hours. This turbine burns 14gph and has a 24 gallon tank. Basic math already puts that less than 2 hours and thats assuming you fly until you fall out of the sky. With startup + 15 minute reserves you're looking at 1 hour of endurance. Average cruise speed is more like 85mph so you're not traveling cross country in one of these things unless you're *really* up for a challenge.
    2. The belt drive is not a gear it's a clutch. There is nothing more efficient about this than the mosquito which uses a centrifugal clutch.
    3. The mosquito costs almost twice as much because they are professionally built with glass panels. Helicycle's are all amateur built with older avionics. And thats only if you want a turbine model Mosquito. They also sell 2 piston models that are much cheaper and have much better range due to less fuel burn. Some people may even prefer the piston model since it provides more instant torque than the turbine and no fear of flameout and they are easier to work on. There's very few people in the country who can repair an APU turbine like this.

You would need a rotorcraft rating to fly the helicycle legally. There is one version of the mosquito that is considered “ultralight” due to its weight which technically does not require a license but still not advisable. Experimental has nothing to do with it.

    • @NateVolk
      @NateVolk Před 3 lety +1

Not really, read the exceptions in the FARs 61.37 "(2) The rating limitations of this section do not apply to- An experimental certificate, unless the operation involves carrying a passenger."
