I used to go to rallies all of the time. Had good times and safe times. But the older I get the more I don't really care for the crowds. I think it's probably been about 6 yrs since I have been to a rally. I love going to the Black Hills but I go off season. Less crowds. No lines. Hotels are cheaper.

Our first time to Sturgis. Just 3 guys in their 20s not knowing what to expect and made no plans. Just went. Broke down coming into town. A nice group saw us working and invited us to their house to park the bike and put it on a charger. We walked around while the bike charged up. When we came back the pointed us to a mechanic, as the stator had fried, and pointed us to hog heaven. Amazing people. While there got to talking to our camping neighbor who had a converted box truck. Found out he actually live close to us back home and rearranged his bikes to haul the broken one home for us. Another amazing group. Have always had a great time and always meet great people.

Just watched your video and overall I enjoyed it. I just have one exception, I’m pushing 80 (still riding)and have an older school approach. I feel that respect is earned, not just given. When I go to the different rallies or just out riding, I show people courtesy, which for me has always accomplished the same thing.

Adding a point on passing a club. I understand the concept, but I think it’s ridiculous to a certain level.
If a club is traveling to impede the flow of traffic and they make it obvious, hey don’t mess with us. That is crap. They too can show respect and allow others ( especially faster) to pass.
    Just my opinion.

Great video. Full disclosure, 30 year rider, 5 as a motorcycle traffic cop. Used to live a few hours from Daytona.. I attended my first event last year at the Arizona bike week.
It was a good time, but it’s not my thing. I’m going to attend a second one this year and see how it feels.
Not a fan of big crowds and some of the dumb stuff that happens, but I’m doing it again this year.

Well said John. All great points. Boils down to 3 words, courtesy-kindness-
respect. If your not sure about a situation. Just go the other way or find something else to. I've been to a lot of rally and never had an issue either. They're all good for fun, comoradiry, memories to enjoy for a lifetime, and great riding. I'd also recommend, after you've done one or two close rally and you're ready to spread your wings for a long destination rally, consider taking reasonable segments to get there. The journey to and from a rally are just as memorable as the rally. Blasting to Sturgis from NJ in two days may be fun, but you'll miss so much of this great country. Enjoy it. Well just my 2 cents. Great video brother, looking forward to seeing your trip with Cam. See ya soon. Be safe.

I had a couple stop by my place to look at a trailer I was selling. They were both riding triumph adventure bikes. I had just returned home from Sturgis and we started chatting about it. They said they always wanted to go but they were always nervous about sturgis because they hear stories of hells angels causing trouble.. and more recently they were worried about antifa and other violent issues. I laughed and told them they should stop listening to propaganda and nonsense and just go. The riding is amazing and it’s a great time.

Also, be aware of your surroundings. I was on the Weirs one afternoon and some drunk a-hole on an orange street glide decided to do a burn out.. lost control and side swiped a parked bike in the middle parking strip. Knocked over 2 bikes.. and then he took off. Luckily my daughter was quick enough to get his plate number and we lifted the bikes back onto their side stands and left them a note.

I remember going to MB bike week. I got a hotel room at the Bay View with a couple friends. Well we jumped in the elevator to go up to our room and a couple HA's got on with us. Turns out they rented out an entire floor. So we go to the room drop our stuff and head back to the elevator. Well we though the B on the panel was for the beach level. Well it was for the basement. Well the doors opened and there was a very large law enforcement presence. We knew why they were set up down there. So we all kind of looked at each other and waited for the doors to close. Well we much the G for the ground floor and the doors close. We get to the ground floor and walk out and there are a couple HA's in the lobby. I walked over to one and said "Hey man, no disrespect if you know already. But there is a shit load of guys in the basement that would like nothing more than to talk to you all in a room with a one way mirror and a camera if you know what I mean." The guy looked at me and said "Thanks for the heads up." As long as you don't act like an ass they will talk to you like a normal person.

If someone goes to a rally with an ego the size of Texas, they may end up paying more than the trip would have normally cost them. Another great piece of advise to new riders is be you. Do NOT try or portray to be, something you are not.

I have been riding for 34 years and never been to a rally. My enjoyment from motorcycle riding comes from riding great motorcycle roads. I despise being in any type of slow moving traffic and crowded roads. I have a group of friends who are the same. We make several weekend rides and a 6 day ride in September every year. Always looking for curvy countryside roads and good eats. Someone may talk me into a rally someday but it hasn't happened yet.

Absolutely true. We were riding up to Americade and there were 6 of us. We came up on a 1% club going slower then we were. I told my buddies to hang back and I slowly road up to the road Captain and asked for permission via hand signals if it was ok to pass. He gave me thumbs up so I fell back picked up my buddies and we slowly passed them and then throttled up. Couple hours later they found us in town and invited us to come hang out with them and I feel it was there way of saying thank You with out saying it for showing there club respect.

I have been riding since 1989 and although I have been to events local to me that have been Day rides, bike blessings, charity events, poker rides and such, I have never been to a rally per se, and this is a very good topic to have u speak about, I have encountered 1%ers at many of these events over the years and they seem mostly to keep together and to themselves and I have been directed at times upon arrival even though there is space to park my bike that this particular area is not quite the area to do that...

The worst thing that has ever happened to me at a rally was in Surgis, as I was exiting a T Shirt store where the store front was rented to an outfit promoting an around neck massage gizmo. Sitting there was a 350 pound big burly biker who looked to be in bliss. I smiled and said, does that feel as good as it looks? I guess I startled him and he opened his eyes, looked at me and grinningly said: "It's giving me a chubster, you should try it". About an hour later I walked past a house rented by a 1% club, it's location at the foot of a hill where the police headquarters is situated atop the hill, and who do I see? That same guy. I smile, point to the cop shop and give the thumbs up to the party going on. The guy motioned for me to come over and once I got to him he offered me a beer

I dunno, I stay away from rallies because they just seem like their full of a bunch of lame boomers or gate keepers who pretend to care about freedom but have so many unwritten rules they want you to follow you would need a law degree to know them all. Respect is mutual and it’s always the guys who trailer their bikes, treat the locals like shit(which is why the locals hate rallies) and have huge egos who demand respect while giving none. I’ll stick to the smaller chopper shows where the vibe is much more live and let live. Sons of Anarchy killed the bike scene. Everyone concerned with club rules even when their not in a club. I’m not in your club, I’m not beholden to your rules, and I live in the USA. Everyone in the bike community has turned into hall monitors.

I’d love to go, I personally have a problem with crowds of people. That alone makes me nervous. Even when I run across other riders on the road. Other riders make me so nervous. I know what it is. It’s the intimidation they give off. I can tell that they’ve been riding for a very long time. I simply just mind my own business every where I go. I haven’t even told my coworker if I would go. He said he’ll hit me up🤷🏽‍♂️. We’ll see what happens. But definitely great advice as always🤙🏽.

Let these clubs know when they ride around trucks on the highway to also show respect!!!! They are visitors to someone else’s home. We are doing a job and will return the respect we receive.
Big thing is don’t park in truck parking when stopping anywhere. Good way to get a bike dumped over or hit! It’s not your home!

All great points, but should be common simple knowledge..Been to only Daytona & Laconia..People are people, treat people the way you wanted to be treated..everyone is there for a good time, all types of people from all walks of life..if you take it easy on the booze, and just chill you’ll be just fine..I tend to go a couple of days before a rally so I am able to ride and go to the sites before it gets really crowded, then hit the rally to look at bikes and people watch..ride safe everyone

    Great job John!
    All good info!
Americade is a great start for rally experience in the North East!
Be cautious using the term "BROTHER" as some may take offense if they don't know you.
The term "SIR" is ALWAYS RESPECTFUL..
Subordinate YOUR ego, be respectful, and remain humble and you will enjoy the ride/rally!

Great video! Awesome advice. I am a lifelong rider and been to Americade probably 20 times and last year went to Laconia for the first time. Mind your own business and respect and there are no problems. I am also a Goldwing rider and have always rode metrics and honestly never felt uncomfortable even if outnumbered and surrounded by Harleys.
One day, i will ride into Laconia on a Harley 😉

Watch your alcohol consumption especially when you’re in a bar with 1%er’s inside. Do not park your bike too close to the bike to your left to where they can’t stand up their bike when they’re leaving. And lastly, this is just me but I always park my bike in first gear. Just Incase it rolls away and hits someone or something.

Was in San Diego back in 2019. I go to every Harley dealership when I'm on vacation to get a shirt and poker chip. We visited the HD in San Diego. They were having a huge event. The 1% HA club was there. They had a canopy set up. We were walking back to our rental car and I started walking past their set up. I had a prospect step in front of me and asked me where I was going. Told him I was going to my car. He said ok and stepped aside. Not sure why he did this. We weren't walking through their booth. I didn't act scared or intimidated told him where i was going and kept on walking. Maybe he was trying to look good for his sponsor.

Lotta ppl worry about Clubs. Mainly one or more of the dominants.
Trust me if you’re not trying to be on some BS; they do not care about u one bit. You’re a inconsequential civilian. Not one Club member gonna just go start shit with a civilian. Or extremely rare. It just draws heat.
    Be safe have fun
    Respect is #1
    Use the golden rule.

The whole don’t pass when it’s a two lane road or more is so childish. Grown men who get upset and want to fight you over that are incredibly immature.
Any rider should be able to pass anyone going slower than they want to ride because that same group would pass you without a second thought or in an attempt to show their “dominance”.
Everything else you mentioned is common universal respect and spot on.

The main reason the CMA does not do top or bottom rockers at all. As our moto goes: "We are here if you need us." Other than that, we give a wide birth to the 1%ers and other Riding groups. The respect has indeed been and still is a two way street. As in all things know your place and respect others.

Yea, that "don't touch someone's bike" thing; that's a real thing. If you're not my one, long-term riding buddy, or my brother-in-law, just don't touch my shit. It's just another Harley, but it's mine. Just don't. It's rude.

Oh ya one day on a two lane highway, I 95, a guy on a bike holding a bag of some sort in one hand was in the left lane and I was in the right lane after having passed a few cars from the left lane and the right lane u know lane shopping, I passed him on the right, well about 5 miles down the road I got off my exit and he followed behind and at a stoplight not far up the road he pulled up on my left and said something about why u pass me on my blind side?! And I shrugged my shoulders and said sorry and then he pushed my shoulder hard I fell over dropping my bike and he did a u-turn and sped away to the highway on ramp!! Do u know what I did to have this happen?

The best bet is to know what kind of rally you want to attend because, for some rallies, if you're not a recognized 1% or outlaw MC leave your patches at home. You'll avoid the Who are you, where are you from then it goes south from there.

Great video Big John! Best advice - have fun and be courteous. Remember “kindergarten rules” apply and you’ll be just fine. I’ve been to many rallies alone and with a group and never have had any issues. There’s lots of really cool and interesting people out there with all of the same interests - riding motorcycles and enjoying the freedom. There are all kinds of personalities out there and everyone is out to have a good time. Stay safe out there. 🤜🏼

Hey, I really enjoy your videos. In this video, I wanted to ask you a question about something. This is probably going to sound somewhat strange, but here goes. I'm a black man, and I've been to a couple of rallies. I just wonder if you think I would have any issues with some of the other bikers because of my color? I am mixed, lol, but I was wondering. I've actually been riding with some 1%ers in the back of the group. I'm from a small town in West Virginia. There are not many black bikers here. I don't want to go to black bike week, which I've seen on CZcams. I don't get into the crotch rocket bike's. I just live and love Harley's. Just wanted your thoughts on this. Thank you very much! May the angels on the highway watch over you!
