That was awesome to see. I was eating breakfast at the red caboose motel when it went by with the freight. I thought that was different. Even the waitress there, everyday, mention it was strange to see freightcars. I got the kids pack up in the car and made it down to the yard to see them unloading the lumber Bulkhead car on the team track. The forklift was putting the lumber on the "team of horses" cart. (semi truck) lol. Thanks for sharing this video, it was a good memory to have.
Joe, you continue to be my favorite steam videographer. Beautiful work. I love the backlighting, the slow solid panning, the telephoto work, and the editing, all excellent. As always, looking forward to more.
Thanks for your effort. The shots were well choosen, the atmospher was real, the camera was steady, your eye for a great picture is brilliant. Barry, UK.
@bigjim4life - Funny you mention that. My life was no less busy during the course of this. I would wake up at 3:30AM to drive out to Strasburg, film, and be back in time for work at 10AM! Haha!
I can't find the words to express how great this video is, I've been looking at a few different videos of these freights on the Strasburg Railroad and your video surpasses them all. Subscribing to your channel was a no-brainer, great work man!
Always a treat to see your work. The Doomsday Preppers and Steampunks will be happy to see that their modern-day supplies will be delivered on time in the event of diesel fuel becoming unavailable in the future. Enjoyed the stack talk in there too.
Wow, that opening shot! This is the best video of Strasburg so far, because it not only captures the spirit of steam, but also the spirit of the location. This is going to be a hard one to beat for a very long time. I'm just going to set my camera down, and walk away slowly...
@o00o00ozy , each shot was color graded to some degree. The Cherry Hill shot required the most color grading simply because of how foggy it was. As for the cameras, there is a reason I put down traditional video cameras in 2010. There is so much more creativity in using a DSLR camera (with good lenses)! ...and thank you for your compliments! :)
joe between this and the 3025 video i mean wow. i can't say anymore than that. except that this video alone shows and proves. that steam can still do what they were built to do. and 90 proves it in grand style and the best part is that she had no diesel assistance.
Beautiful video! I hate when they add a diesel on these freight trains - I don't believe there needed! I understand the loads are heavyer with modern freight cars due to increased hauling capacity, but you can't tell me that #90 couldn't pull a 20 or so car consist alone. 2-10-0's were used as pusher engines on long trains back in the steam days. Unless there's some steep grade on the line I don't know about I say let her have it!
As for the technical details, was there color grading on any of the shots, like the one at Cherry Hill? Because if not, these Picture/Video cameras are doing better than professional camcorders in my opinion.
Yes in deed. I filmed this in 2012 when Strasburg was running steam-powered freights with some regularity - I believe it was twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday mornings or something similar. I distinctly remember waking up early to shoot some of this before heading off to work. If you look closely, you will notice three different consists, as I shot this video over three different days. I was lucky enough to get #90 all three times. :)
@@fuscoproductions Nice. The only downside about this is that strasburg doesn't do this anymore. I mean the last time I recall they did it was in 2019 with 89
This is a very good video. Not in all cases but in certain railway circumstances, possibly some short line situations steam is a good way to go. If a lot more trains can run on real revenue freight, with steam, that would reduce the dependence on foreign oil.
What exactly is she hauling here? I thought Strasburg was an exclusively tourist railroad, I don't really understand what the purpose of this was. Do they do this often? It makes even less sense if they just got up one morning and decided to haul a local freight for no apparent reason and never did it again.
They do it often; they have a trans loading business. It is revenue freight. Most of the time they use diesel power but occasionally they use steam power.
@JoMiFu While I'd love to do that as well, I'd have to be at work a little earlier, and my wife would kill me if I did that multiple times in a three week period, all that gas money gone... :p
Joseph- looking to connect via email- I am working on a project for our church, and was looking to use/license some of your footage- let me know if this is doable, thanks! Bradytreat@gtaog.org

This is an awesome video! You make it look like the golden age of steam! 5 stars!

Kudos for excellent videography: the use of backlighting, tracking and "people shots" (rail employees) make this a standout short production.

That was an amazing video. The best I've seen of Strasburg freight.
Another outstanding video, Joe!
Next summer, I'll plan on being there at least two mornings.
Great cinematography. :)
Beautiful video!

As usual, The Old Outguns The New In Strasburg, I like it.
Awesome, that’s beautiful!
Awesome awesome awesome video!! I saw a few different consists, over how many mornings was this filmed?
Joe, this video is simply fantastic. Each video you make looks more and more like a movie.
Awesome! Made my day!
Need Corey Feldman to do a train dodge here.
Very good footage and steam in the beginning of the video!
It was filmed over three weeks time.
Kudos.
Fine Video.
Very good !
Great Video, what was the reason behind the move?
Hey Joe, good stuff. May I ask what type of Video camera did you use.
As for the technical details, was there color grading on any of the shots, like the one at Cherry Hill? Because if not, these Picture/Video cameras are doing better than professional camcorders in my opinion.
Thanks! It was filmed with a Canon Rebel T2i and T3i.
Vermont, Ohio Central, and Strausburg are tourist and working railroads too.
And Black River and Western
This sure is rare to see in the 21st century and strasburg of all places

@@evanf1293 that’s why I went out to capture it when I could. You never know how long these things last.
@@fuscoproductions Yeah point taken
They need to start making those and get rid of the ones that run today!
What type of Video camera is this. Great quality and i got to see Steam freight while I was up there once

what do you all think of my videos so far?
@JoMiFu Lucky...wish I could be there for three weeks to film something like that...damn job/family :p
hey check out the Poznan steam experience to see real steam doing real work IN POLAND also you can do driving turns on real runs
I Hace a Rebel T2i also and im wondering what lenses you use for it to make it look like a movie
What camera did you use. Looks so real.
Am I crazy, or this a composite film of two different freights? Because in one shot 90 is hauling two tanks behind here, but she isn't in other shots.
+Mark Yerkes, actually, this is a composite of three different freights! Good eye. :)
