All good points and looks great. One suggestion for others watching is when getting any type of striping kit, always get one the is slightly wider that the mower wheels to prevent wheel marks on the stripes.
I’ve been at 5/8” with my tall fescue for years now. You just need to train it to shorter cuts and stay on top of your cutting and fertilizer schedules to keep it going.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes I’m just north of Boston, every year weather permitting I try to get in the turf to cut in Mid March. Plus I really focus on my fertilizers and micronutrients to help out. Thanks 👍🏾. Yep, I that is a possibility. I may actually find a darker MVS fescue seed and overseed with just that cultivar. I'm trying to keep this mostly fescue and the existing KBG is going to continue to spread over time. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾

Thank you for this. I live in Australia in a cool temperate part of the country. But we get some very hot temps in summer too. My lawn was originally 100% fescue, but I overseeded it 50/50 fescue and KBG last spring. It struggled through summer this year, but I’m hoping to get better performance now that it’s had more time to establish. I’m currently at about 65mm (roughly 2 1/2”) for winter, down from 3.5. I’ve been considering leaving it at that height this summer just to see how it goes.
Outstanding points. I'm at 2.75 in the front and 2.25 in the back where there's more moisture. Plan to go lower with a different mower in the fall. I've learned all that matters is what's acceptable to you. I appreciate this!
I agree that the sweet spot is a little higher. I will be playing with HOC in the fall after I see how it continues to perform the rest of the season at this HOC. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
@DMCnME I would like to go to Bermuda for a portion of my lawn which would probably be my front yard. I have so much shade throughout my lawn that I'm not positive it would perform at its best. With the way the recent years of weather patterns have gone Bermuda is looking way more appealing! If I had full sun I would definitely do some Bermuda. I would choose IronCutter Bermuda if I were to do it.
Thanks! I disagree with the requirements you stated because my lawn doesn't meet either one of those that you described. I have areas that are high and I have areas that are at least 2 inches low or more. My irrigation is far from perfect but I understand the coverage and the output and I make the necessary adjustments to get the water in the ground. Which sometimes means hand watering areas. Thanks for watching!
Cam, first of all your lawn looks amazing as usual. I'm just curious though, it seems like your backyard gets ample amounts of shade. I have plenty doubts that this would be as successful if it was in full sun all day. Not trying to take anything at all away from what you've accomplished cause I'm my mind you truly are a professional, but I just wonder if the same results could be attained in different conditions.
100% valid point. I addressed that in a prior video. I do have a little under half of my back lawn that is full sun (1500k sq ft). The section that is next to the raised garden bed. That area is on its own irrigation zone and I have to do the most monitoring in that area but it is still performing well. Your point is valid that shade cover does help but the full sun area is still performing. Also, my test plot is at 1.5" full sun and performing like a champ.
Agree with you 100%. My lawn is in full sun for at least 8 hours a day and with this intense heat that we have had and lack of irrigation it is pretty much dormant and will need intense overseeding this fall
Great information Cam. I am working on lower HOC with the same cultivar. I noticed the same loss of color so I am back up near 2 inches. Will see how it goes from there. May stay at 1.75" to 2".
I think there is a sweet spot somewhere between 1.5-2". I'm going to play around with HOC in the fall once I see how it performs all season at this HOC. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
Completely different grass types and management practices. I cant speak on the management practices for that grass type, in this video I am talking about cool season Tall Fescue. Thanks for watching though.
Looks great, I usually cut at 4 inches and found 3 inches HOC actually looks better. 1.25 HOC would not work for my lawn due to grading issues. I am planning to nuke my lawn in the next week or so and prepare for a complete renovation during the labor day weekend. May have to pull back if we still have high temperatures here in Baltimore. I will use that time to further recondition the soil and hopefully improve the overall grading. You're a real one at that 1.25 HOC, not for the faint of heart. Stay blessed and keep workin!
I appreciate your comment and continued support 🙏🏾. I think you have the right plan laid out your renovation. For the past few years I have been encouraging people to come off of the 4"+ fescue and just try 3". From a performance perspective it's not much difference but the look is MUCH BETTER. 🤣 the newer tall fescue cultivars are really nice and versatile. There are other grass types that are better suited for different climates that will take less inputs and have less maintenance to keep them looking like this during the tough period of the year.
