Overseed Your Lawn WITHOUT Aerating

- I have completed my fall overseeding for 2022 so our 2023 lawn is on the way. I decided to test overseeding this year without aerating. I typically like aerating because it helps to prepare a seed bed for the seed to fall into for germination. We will see how this goes. Hope you enjoy the video!
Just Know...We Workin'!!!
I know that many people are going to ask where to buy the seed. My recommendation is to try your local landscape/seed distributor first because there are many distributors around the country for Mountain View Seed. If that does not work for you here are a couple online options, Im sure there are more out there also.
1. Newsom Seed if you are local to Maryland
2. GCI Turf Grass Seed with Mountain View Seed Cultivars

That fence color makes the lawn really pop in the backyard. Gotta wear sunglasses in that backyard from the blinding green back there.
Haha. Thanks man. It should be back to looking good in a couple of weeks. Its looking like it has went a couple rounds right now.
Just got in the second mow today after overseeding (started later than I wanted this year). I followed your approach. Just 1 pass with the SunJoe dethatcher, raked it all up, and laid down fert. I had a bunch of starter fert left over from last year's semi renovation (using tips in your other videos) so I took a chance and used it up on this year's overseed. Threw down the Mountain View Top Choice, watered for 3 weeks and got lucky with rain these last two weeks. And now the lawn looks...AMAZING! I live in central MD, frost was fairly mild and didn't do any damage, but next year I'll start in early Sept. So in 12.5 months my lawn has gone from weedy, sparse and pretty tired looking to lush, thick and green. THANKS AGAIN for the great content!
NICE!!! Thats what I like to hear, when thing completely turn around for your lawn. Glad that you are getting results. Be consistent with it and it will continue to get better over time.
wow your lawn is so lush and beautiful good job. We had some extreme heat this summer and my grass got hammered here in Mass. I wasn't able to water it because we had a water ban, so this past week I detach the lawn and gave it a good rake. I applied seeds down waiting now for some rain and cooler temperatures.
Sounds like a plan. With rain and cooler temps it will bounce back.
Man! I’ve Been out here for 20 years and I never knew about that store good looking my brother👍🏿
No problem! They are good people out there and have a lot of options for seed, fert, and lawn supplies.
What a beautiful lawn. Great seasonal practices and your hard work shows. Awesome video...
Thanks 🙏🏾! I agree good seasonal practices go a long way for your lawn. Thanks for watching
Yo, what a happy dude. Just watching this video his good mood was totally infectious on me. +1 and a sub... Good stuff
I appreciate that 🙏🏾! I do enjoy being out in the lawn and making videos to help people. Thanks for subscribing!
Another timely and informative video. Weather permitting my seed goes down Friday. Appreciate the content you guys have put out. 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
Thanks man 🙏🏾! We got a good rain last night into this morning which should definitely help me out with germination this week.
Your lawn looks great!!
Thanks 🙏🏾!
Keep up the great content!👍🏽
Thanks and thanks for watching 🙏🏾
Good video Cam! I'm sure it will look amazing!
Thanks! I'm ready to see how it turns out. I know it will bounce back in a couple weeks.
I like the leaf blow after detach looks nice
Thanks 👍🏾!
Great videos man love thr knowledge love the tips love the lawn !!!! Keep getting big dog !!!
Thanks for watching and supporting! I appreciate that 🙏🏾!
looks great Buddy!
Thanks!
Can't go wrong with adding a little KBG to the mix. Better gettin better lol. Lawn looks great 👍💚🦸
I agree. You know there is always room for improvement. My lawn is far from perfect.
I get my seed from Newsome’s too. Got the winnings colors tall fescue and couldn’t be happier.
Nice! I have heard good things about Winning Colors. I haven't tried any yet. They are good people out there at Newsom for sure!
lawn looks great.
Thanks 👍🏾!
Thank you for the heads up!!! Time to overseed 💚
You're welcome!
Overseeded today, ground temps are still a little high but needed to throw down while we're in the window. Put down a similar 85/15 blend and will try to patiently wait for the KBG to germinate. Can't wait to see your results, Cam, can't get much better!
I'm gonna try to make it better every year! I think some warmer soil temps are good especially for the KBG as long as you keep moisture on the ground it will be fine. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾!
You're absolutely right, only use quality seed when over seeding. There's a lot of bad seed out there. Spend the extra money in the end you will be glad you did.
I agree with you 100%. Thanks for watching
I rock with newsome seed too
They are good ppl out there.

I really like HyrBrix Soil Alive. So it was great seeing someone else using it. Just know I always enjoy watching your videos.
I appreciate you for watching 🙏🏾! I have been using HyrBrix in some way for about 3 yrs now. I love it its my go to granular fert.
Great video. Keep them coming and God bless
Thank you, more to come!
I enjoy your videos grass looks awesome!
I'm in Texas I've had a little success with my Fescue this year in the shade.
The heat just burnt out my grass in direct sun
Our temperature was between 101 to 110 here but I will be over seeding again!
Thanks for sharing knowledge God bless 🙏
Thanks for watching 🙏🏾! Yeah, those temperatures are going to be a challenge for a cool season grass type. If that is the grass type that you want, i believe you can have it but you are going to have to be dedicated and committed 🤣.
Yes sir I am and will be thank you!
those temperatures are insane! a couple of 90 degree days in a row here eastern USA is enough to start browning most lawns
@@ronaldwoofer5024 agreed. It can survive it with water and proper nutrition. North Carolina gets pretty hot and there is still a lot of good fescue grown there.
My goodness, your lawn is beautiful. I tried to dethatch my backyard on yesterday, but I noticed it needs to be done probably another 5 or 6 times (LOL), but it's not going to happen until spring. I didn't finish yesterday but I will be finishing today. Thanks for the video because I can't aerate but I am going to put down Air8 hopefully that will help
Dethatching can be a chore but the SunJoe and my backpack blower makes it not so bad. If your lawn is super thick your you have never Dethatched before it definitely can be rough. It helps the lawn so much though.
Great job 👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
Always great content. Nice music also.
Thanks 🙏🏾. Glad you liked it.
Great episode! Great tip about the sharp blades on those baby grass plants.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
Great info!
Thanks
I do like the smell of grass seed as well, but I've found something better. I'm in the process of pre-germinating my seed right, and the earthy aroma of the "tea" that comes after hours of the seeds soaking is on another level!
Oh really. I have never pre-germed seed before yet. I plan to try it some time just to see how it goes.
Nice man, thank you for the video!! Let's Gooooo!
Yessir...let's go!!! We Workin 💪🏾🌱
Aeration is critical for compacted and heavy clay lawns. I've tried to only dethatch and overseed during prior years. While the grass came in well during the fall, it really struggled during the summer that followed each time.
I agree with you that it is definitely more important on compacted and heavy clay soil. Thats not a issue that I'm dealing with which is why I clarified that wasn't a problem I had.
That makes sense, I'm glad you aren't dealing with compaction in your yard. Also, I definitely like your idea of choosing a blend of KBG and TTTF. I'll definitely keep following your lawn as it progresses
@@dudethebrojohnson7018 Follow along. I still have a few more videos to get out before the off season hits.
I have not aerated in 4 years , and this is what I typically do is run the sun joe thru dethatch and scarify and overseed . It usually turns out fantastic.
Good to hear Vito! I think I will turn out great. The main goal is seed to soil contact, moisture, and some sun and bam germination. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾!
Excellent and well done video sir! I enjoyed it. I’m aerating this year again, but like you, not going this route next year. I know your lawn will only get better in a few days, but it’s poppin now! Good luck man, I look forward to seeing the kbg this season.
Thanks sir! I'm trying out no aeration this year and we will see how it goes. I like aerating in my opinion because it prepares a seed bed for the seed to fall into and the leaves the plugs on the surface also for seed to soil contact. The yard is already starting to recover but we need a little more sun to help it out. Looking forward to seeing how that Triple Threat looks when you get it up and growing.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes haha thanks man. In a good and bad way, we won’t get to show it off properly being I kept so much GCI seed. However I have buddies sowing it, so hopefully we can get a good glimpse of it in a way. God bless you Cam! You have a awesome channel man. Best of luck in all of it.
Over seeding sounds good, but I have about 18 thousand square of lawn and the seed pricing has skyrocked, purchased a twenty pound bag of Johnathan green for 130, last year price 96 bucks, Ouch. Next season if prices come down I'll try it. Thank you, very informative. Keep up the good work 😃.
@@nesto2302 MAN, $130 for a 20 lbs bag of seed is way overpriced in my opinion unless you are talking about KBG seed. If you have 18k sq ft I would be looking at a TTTF or TTTF/KBG mix. You can spend $130-160 and get a 50 lbs bag.
I get better seeding succes when dethatching vs aerating which I think is best to expose the soil for better seed to soil contact. I aerate when I plan to apply compost. Companies push aerating because it is easy work vs dethatching.
Good point. I did have a much quicker recovery with "dethatching" vs aeration. Germination and establishment seems to be pretty good also.
didnt know you are in the area! Are you in NOVA? I also go to Newsoms or even the "The Mill" in MD which i think private labels some of their seed.
I'm in MD. I gotta get out to The Mill i have heard about them.

Really love the knowledge you teach.
Been following you on Insta for a bit but been checking your video. Great work keep it up.
Thanks for coming over to check out the channel! You will find that I give more explanation here than I do on my IG page. Hope you enjoy the channel!
Your lawn looks great, even scarified! What setting did you use on the spreader? I use TopChoice grass seed as well and it calls for 3-5 lbs per 1000 square feet for an overseeding, but it looks like you're putting down much more than that.
Thanks 👍🏾! I put down 4 lbs/1000 in my front yard and 6 lbs/1000 in the back. The back was much thinner after power raking. Your settings is going to depend on your spreader. For my Spyker I used 6.5 in the back and 6.3 in the front and made 2 passes across the area. Again, those settings will vary depending on your spreader so you will have to dial in the setting for your specific spreader.
Looking forward to the results. It's the Cytogro what harmed the lawn this summer?
Not at all from the Cytogro, its like a biostimulant. Nothing in there to really harm the lawn.
Which cartridge do you use in the Sun Joe to thin out your fescue… dethatcher or scarifier? Thanks!
The dethatcher.
Thank you for your information. I live in Oregon state and lot of sun in my side yard during summer. We had rain during on October to May. Can you recommend me which seed is good for my side yard and not much sun place. Thank you!
In your location you would be good with any of the cool season grasses...tall fescue, KBG, or Rye grass. Tall Fescue is pretty shade tolerant but still needs 4-6 hrs of direct sunlight to really thrive but it will do ok with less and filtered sunlight. If the area is really shady you will want to look into fine fescue, chewing, or hard fescue. Those types are more shade tolerant.
Subbed. I am in crofton
Thats for subscribing 🙏🏾
How do you measure the ratio of Blue Grass to the Tall Fescue? also the Cytogro and Propiconazole, when do you apply those? is it before the seeds or after?
At the time of seeding it is by weight of the seed that is applied. After that of course its hard to tell. I apply all my products at the day of seeding. Of course there will be follow on applications of Cytogro monthly until the grass stops growing.
Beautiful lawn Cam! I also use MVS and can't wait to seed this year! I start seeding next week. I'm also going to be adding 365 SS this year along with Award kbg. Great video, I can't wait to see how your lawn looks after the overseed is complete.
Good luck! I wish you the best with your seeding also next week!
A lawn Master here …superb
Thanks but definitely not a master...so much more to learn. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾!
Your lawn looks totally awesome!!! Do you consult?
I do. Send me an email at cameron@elevatedlawnscapes.com
The liquid fungus killer, do you add water to it? Do you apply it once you put down your new seeds??
I've just applied my tall fescue seeds, I've aerated but believe we went too low is cutting the lawn preparing for aeration. I can see in some areas the dirt..I'm going it comes back as we have seriously overseeded the yard.
We have irrigation on the property. Can the seed, the Kentucky blue grass that you're using be used in Charlotte NC.?? Your lawn is gorgeous.
Yes mixed and I applied the fungicide per the label with water the same say I seeded.
If you cut too low it will be ok you are putting down new seed anyway. The KBG can survive there with proper water, nutrients, and management.
Awesome lawn my man!
I did not plan to aerate my TTTF/KBG this year as well but definitely need to dethatch. Doing that this week with overseed. My biggest challenge this year with TTTF/KBG was finding the best mowing height without the fescue laying over.
Since you applied Propiconazole at the time of seeding, do you water it in or let it sit on leaf blades for at least 24 hrs?
I didn't wait 24 hrs before starting the first watering cycle. It was a couple hrs before I finished everything and turned the water on.
How do you prevent the seed from going into the mulch bed? I got the 90/10 athletic blend from mountain view and then got the exact same 10lb bag of 365 you got. I spent 3 full days doing my lawn the labor day. I cut grass down to 1 and 3/4 then used sun joe rake on zero and pulled alot up. I wondering if i cut to low it looks crazy right now but i wanted the seed to be able to grow without the older grass covering it. I also put down an organic fertilizer thinking it takes about 2 weeks for that to work that is when the seed should be growing and that would help it. Tell me what you think about what i did. I just subscribed to your channel i can tell you make great videos and you got a great lawn. Some of these guys have channels and have crab grass lol
I think your plan will be fine and you should have good seed to soil contact. That is key for getting new seed to grow after germination. I am not a fan of organic fertilizers because the release of the nitrogen is not as predictable. You may think it will release slow but microbes are more active in moist and warm environments which is what is created for seed germination. Therefore, it could still be releasing fairly quickly but I do not think you will have any problems. Make sure your soil actually needs the higher Phosphorus that is in organic fert with a soil test.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes good to know about the organic fertilizer i never knew that. Im new to this but i have taken it on with a passion. Lol. I actually did do a soil test and phosphorous was extremely high and others were low so i went witj Jonathan green which has no phosphorous. Its only been 2 days and i cant wait for the seeds to start growing. Thanks for the reply. Look forward to checking out all your videos
@@therealbrian732 sounds good. Im glad to hear that you are liking being in the lawn Nd that you got at soil test. You are on the right track. Keep learning and be consistent and the lawn will reward your efforts.
@Brian N I just released a video that answers your question about preventing seed from going into the mulch beds.
My guy!
Yessir! As you know...We Workin 💪🏾🌱
Great video, at 2.5 inches at what setting did you have the sunjoe dethatcher ? I just bought that same dethatcher.
I set mine on 0 and it did exactly what I needed. Thank for watching 🙏🏾!
Like your Vids bro. I'm down in Charlotte NC and would like to get some of that seed you're using. Any help getting it would be greatly appreciated. I over seeded last year with Jonathan Green Black Beauty and somewhat pleased with it. Not as strong as stated. I think Scotts is better at a cheaper price. Help a brother out Please.
You can check your local seed distributors or online at United Seeds or Heritage PPG.
Got my sunjoe out of the attic last week I'm starting to take my hight of cut down now and kill my little bit of crab gras on my edges. hopefully I'll be seeding the last week of this month. I need to order my starter fertilizer. If I may ask what's the price for the top choice.
Sounds like you have a plan! The price on seed is gonna vary depending on where you buy it from. I would give your distributor or supply company a call for pricing.
Hi there! Where can we purchase the large 50lb Top Choice premium grass seed in you video. I check Amazon and they only carry the smaller bags. Thank you.
Check the links in the description. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾!
Three days after I over-seeded, there was an un-forecast 1/2” of rain. Now I’m concerned the new seeds were drowned. How can you tell (without waiting two weeks)? PS: that lawn looks amazing.
A .5" of rain will not drown the seeds. As long as you didn't have wash out you will be fine. Rain water is the best water.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes thanks!! Loving your videos!!
Great work, curious to see how the 365ss looks in the Spring. With the hot/humid Summers, have you ever considered #IronCutter
Not for the entire lawn but I would like to try some in my test plot. Just to experiment with having cool season and warm season grass.
Your lawn looks great, question, do you think you get better germination from aerating and overseeding or thatching and overseeding? When I done aeration and overseeding, the seed only grows in the holes and it looks ridiculous, they don't rake out any grass just leave it there and nothing grows, I don't get it
Nice work though, your yard looks great
This is my first year not aerating and I wanted to know which would be better. I may start doing something different with some of my clients depending on how this goes.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes I believe aeration is great for just aeration, it can be good for overseeding a thin lawn, one better is dethatching then aerating then seeding, the best would be just topsoil and seeding, have a good 1
@@fragglerock122 The past 2 years i have dethatched, aerated, and seeded. The lawn was beat up after all that and took some time to recover but when it did it looked great! I like doing a heavy aeration with lots of holes because of what you said the grass mainly grows in the holes.
Not sure if i am envious or jealous of cold weather grass
🤣 I think its definitely more work and picky than warm season grass.
So you did not use a starter fertilizer? Please advise. Thank you
I fertilized at the time of seeding but I did not use your typical "starter fertilizer" analysis with a high Phosphorus analysis.
Is the grass seed you are using recommended for Maryland? What’s the benefit of mixing the two grass seeds? I planted tall fescue and it looked great until June and now it looks terrible and needs to be completely redone. I watered and did my best but still much of the grass died in the heat of the summer.
I live in Maryland so this grass will grow here when managed properly with the correct mowing, nutrition, and water. The benefit of mixing in the KBG is that it has darker color, its spreads/self repairs, and provides additional density to the lawn. Cool Season grasses will begin to struggle in the July timeframe here in Maryland without the proper management practices and most of them require a preventive fungicide to keep disease from damaging the lawn. We had decent rain here this summer so too much water can also be an issue.
How about when you have alot of shade in the lawn? What seed do you recommend in that situation. Thank you
I have a significant amount of shade in my lawn. The best way to fix that is open up the canopy and get more sunlight. Another option is tall fescue or a fine, chewing, or hard fescue.
what is setting number for your sun Joe when detaching? thnx
I used 0. It depends on your HOC and how matted to the soil surface the debris is.
This video makes me realize I need a new mower. My mower’s highest setting is 3”
Thats not a terrible height of cut. It depends on your grass type and your environmental conditions, 3" may be good enough. I have kept my backyard at 3" or less all year for the past 2 yrs.
I aerate, dethatch and overseed every year. I also put soil with compost or leafgro. Do you think that soil or leafgro is necessary when aeration and overseeding is done?
Necessary no. Do you have a significant compaction or leveling issue you are working to fix? Also, many compost are high in Phosphorus so make sure that your soil test show that you need additional Phosphorus added. Continuously adding Phosphorus through compost could eventually lead to other issues.
My neighborhood is a new build. This is my seventh summer at the house. First 5-6 were rough with the grass. For the pass 7years I’ve been treating with sod and overseeding. The last three have been overseeding. It did tremendously better this past year. It does really well in the fall, I always tear the yard down the last day or two before October. Within ten days I have grass growing, by Halloween I have 2 2/12 inches. The second week of November, I’m cutting.
My issue is it struggles at times in the summer we’re certain ares get burned. This is primarily why I overseed every year. Also, I never knew that you could effectively overseed without putting soil down after thatching and aeration.
Where can I buy this seed? I am in Indiana
Information is in the description of the video.
What’s the order in which you apply the products ?
The same order as discussed in the video during the product display and the recap at the end of the video.
Oh yeah…wish I had a local distributor….not in #ZONE9LIFE!🖖🏾🌴💪🏾💪🏾
Yeah man, not many ppl growing fescue and kbg in your area.

Its GREAT for residential homeowner!!! Mine has served me well.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes ok great thankyou 👍 I've been looking at those
my biggest challenge is keeping my neighbors weeds out of the lawn. They cut the grass blowing it into my yard.
Make sure you are using a pre-emergent regularly during your spring applications. Then grow a dense healthy lawn. That will keep the weed down.
My Goodness how many lbs of seed is that? Whole truck bed full?
Yeah, its a lot. Its that time of year for me.
Need your help. Ready to order some seed here in the Midwest. I looked at your previous videos, and checked United Seed . They have the “ Super Turf 1” that bag has millennium srp, firecracker GLS, Dynamite GLS, Titanium GLS. So it has 1 more different seed then the one on your video. But that going for a whopping $267 for #50Lb. Also found this blend on Wind Field United and that bag DYNAMITE G-LS TALL FESCUE, VALKYRIE LS TALL FESCUE
FIRECRACKER SLS TALL FESCUE but for $185 for a 50LB. Not sure the real difference or what to get. Any help would be appreciated 🙏🏼
The GLS cultivars are gray leaf spot resistant and lateral spread as I mentioned in the video. The LS varieties are lateral spread. They are all great MVS varieties. I don't see any issue with either bag you go with.

Are you in Chicago or near
I'm not.
Hoping to do this in the next couple weeks! What do you recommend for a lawn in WI that also has to be strong enough to fend off a 90lb German Shepherd who pisses more than one would like? I hear you saying get a quality seed...I made that mistake patching last spring with a cheap sun/shade blend. Im going to go to a seed/ feed store soon, but what blend should I Try? Thanks!!!
I recommend that you speed up your process you are running out of time up there before the temps drop. Given the time that you have I would make sure the seed mix had a good percentage of Rye and TTTF in it. Follow all my other quality seed recommendations when reading the bag labels. KBG may not have time to establish and survive the winter at this point.
Like it was said, you might be a bit late for KB to establish. I'd act faster and try my luck. To fend off dogs peeing on the lawn, the only thing that I found that works is overwater where the dogs go, to dilute things. I only have to deal with dogs near the street which have really burnt the lawn in the past but watering a lot seems to have helped out a lot. On a hot day, if you are going to water at the end of the day where the dog went, the grass doesn't stand much of a chance.
@@ElevatedLawnscapes Awesome! Thanks for the advice...Maybe ill wait till spring! Im Kind of new to the grass game...But VERY interested in it!
@@Todd.T Yeah, My wife calls me a crazy man because I follow my dog with a pitcher of water everywhere he goes!😄
@@mikek.1600 Spring is not the best time to seed cool season grass. Just temper your expectations for spring seeding with some amount of possible die off during the summer. You may not get as hot up there so it may work out ok.
Can you add an insecticide also if needed
You could. I recommend doing a jar test to make sure all products are compatible. Also confirm the seeding limitations on the label of the insecticide you plan to use. Most insecticides do not have an impact on seed but please confirm with the specific product label.

I would actually recommend that you go with a warm season grass type like Bermuda, Zoysia, or St. Augustine. Most of those come in sod, plugs, or sprigs not seed. You can buy some Bermuda seed if you wanted to go that route. I am in a cool season grass type area, which is different from your area.

But you agree that aeration is very good for a lawn. Correct?
I do agree that it is good for the lawn. I have aerated every year except for this year, just trying something different. To compare the results.
Say brah, I have NEVER done aeration … why ? Because the DAUM grass blades are CONSTANTLY putting AIR into the GROUND 👍🏻 people don’t realize that or something ? Grass actually is a awesome air scrubber 🧽 it is one if not the BEST natural air filters there is ! grass produces around THREE TIMES !! more the amount of oxygen than TREES !!! Did you know that ? The only reason you should ever do aeration is if the ground is clay or super hard soil or you absolutely did not take care of your lawn and just let it go to shit ! But you you are a lawn dude/woman and you care for your lawn there is NEVER a need for aeration . If you want to test your ground if it need aeration go get you a medium length screwdriver if you can push it in more than halfway your good 👍🏻if it sinks all the way to the handle and wants to keep going BACK WAY OFF the watering ! If it doesn’t go in at all you can ether Dethatch and give your ground a good soaking or use a aerator and then soak it … but ya mane I really don’t think folks like us that take proper care of there laws ever really need aeration machine.✌🏻
You said a lot here and I agree with 98% of it. I will be coming out with a video soon that has results and more of my thought process on aeration.
Did you buy all the seed? Haha.
I left a few bags 🤣
