I feel like you would have had better results with styling your natural texture during your 6 months if you used silicones! Silicone fear mongering is not based in science and my curly hair looks and feels SO much better now that i use silicones. I was able to grow my hair down to my butt and its so healthy 😊

Yeah I’m no scientist or anything, I haven’t really even looked into it, but I’ve heard that silicones are put into hair products to moisturize and condition your hair better so it’s softer and shinier.

Silicone haters say they stop moister from the air from penetrating ur hair but then I just think well if u need the moister from the air then ur clearly not moisterising/conditioning ur hair enough

My hair does look softer and shinier with silicones, I'm not fully against them, however I do avoid them in most of my products, like shampoo, conditioner, hair masks, or cul creams, because at first my hair looks amazing, but over time, I have noticed my waves get weighed down, even if I clarify, and my hair looks less wavy, so yeah, I don't think we should demonize them, but they don't work for everyone.

@@IsabellaDemarkogirllllll. I think you have wavy hair. I have wavy hair and using gel makes my hair extremely brittle and I hate it. If I comb my hair when it is not damp or wet my hair gets so so frizzy. When you brush when you have gel it’ll ruin your hair. Your curls do not need to be tamed like that. You need to help your hair form the curls and you do that by using water when you get brush your hair and scrunching with a GOOD hair moisture thingy to help your hair retain that moisture. Staasaaaap using gel like that and let your hair do its natural thing. It doesn’t have to be perfect waves. You do not have curly hair, it is WAVY. WAVY hair is beautiful. Your waves will look so wonky if you use gel like that I think. It’s for curly hair. 😭 this is just my experience. ♥️

I have curly hair and i use my natural curls. But, i don't follow the curly girl method. I need sulfates to clean my scalp, and I don't do complicated styling, I just do scrunch with a mask and gel, and use oil when it's dried. I know curly hair it's not compatible with perfectionist people and some people find more practical to style their hair. At the end of the day, everybody should do what it works for them

I hate curly hair for a long time and I was born and raised in the 60s and when my mother would wash my hair, her child she did that comb it, she ripped her fingers through my hair to untie it and then she used a wide brush to brush through it but she did it very slowly we used no products except she kept my scalp clean and my hair clean and I had no freeze and my hair dried naturally the curls were there I did not have to scrunch did not have to use a lot of products and do a lot techniques to encourage my curl pattern because when it tried, the curl pattern was there, in my early 20s though I had very dark hair and I bleached it. I wasn’t totally bleached. I frosted it that was a term we used back in the day and it took a lot of my curl pattern out of my hair because I put chemicals that were harsh on my hair. It took many years of taking care of my curl pattern and getting it back now I am 75 and curl pattern is coming back more and more like when I was a child and teenager, but when I naturally dry it, the curls are beginning to form again, and I’m not scrunching I’m not doing anything except keeping my hair clean and moisturized and I will use a conditioner on it. I am using what God created on my head and I feel like sometimes too much product can weigh down your hair and it becomes dirty more often my hairdresser says my hair is very healthy.

Hey Isabella! I'm so glad you're taking back the curly girl method because honestly I think you were one of the pioneers of it before it went mainstream. Back then I had short hair so even if if I watched your videos out of curiosity and amusement I couldn't recreate any of it.
Nowadays I have shoulder length, wavy-slightly curly hair, I would say much of it is 2c and a sparkle of 3a and I consumed a lot of curly girl media, like A LOT. So I come here with a few tips that I think are in your interest, since my first results were similar to yours in this video (dry and frizzy) but now I thoroughly enjoy my hair and I think it looks prettier every day and I ALWAYS get compliments on it.
    So here it is:
    1) don't fear sulfates, honestly much of it it's crap. I use head&shoulders sometimes daily and my scalp has never felt fresher or healthier. and no my hair does not get dry nor does it fall out, I believe "harsh" shampoos have come a long way these past 5 years.
    2) scrunching is not the almighty key to perfect curls. In fact I never scrunch these days and my curls are curling! here's what I do: I shampoo and condition as normal, I stylize (apply cream and/or gel) right after the shower always with a curly hairbrush, when I'm done stylizing I use the plopping technique with a soft towel/t-shirt for around 20-30 minutes and after taking it out my curls are set! I just diffuse a little bit around my bangs/crown because I hate hair in my face but that's it.
    3) get the right product. I believe all curly followers have tested a variety of products larger than the normal amount for a human being but the thing is, not everything suits every one. I recommend SKALA which is a brazilian brand of curly hair products, they have everything but their star product is definitely the 1kg hair cream WHICH doubles as gel/hair mask/conditioner. Believe me I thought people were bs'ing with this one, it cannot be a miracle product but it kind of is. I use the CAJU E MURUMURU one and it's a blessing, my mom who has a curlier pattern also uses it and loves it. You should look around for skala options in the UK.
    4) you don't need to rush to scrunch out the crunch. yes, it's true despite what people say, keeping the cast for a few hours is perfectly fine, in fact I never scrunch it away it will fade on its own and yes you'll look a little flat on day 1 but believe me day 2 is gonna be your BEST hair day ever.
    5) don't focus on longevity. so your hair is a mess by day 2, what of it?? style it again 😊 i know there are girls who can keep a style for 5 days and good for them but not everyone's the same, it doesn't mean that you're doing something wrong it's just there are a lot of factors involved. sweat/humidity alas if this what you really want then rely on keeping the cast like i said before.
    6) use a hairbrush! so our hands are good but not always consistent, that's why sometimes we find stark differences between strands but a hairbrush is ALWAYS going to have the same tension and it's gonna treat every strand equally. the difference is noticable.
    I hope this helps 😊

I have dry hair and it’s 2c(texture changes depending on length too lol). Tbh wearing my hair naturally never made a difference in how healthy my hair felt or looked. I have so much density and coarseness that it’s stubborn and requires a lot of product. Im one of those people that just needs to find whatever makes my hair the least amount of maintenance and stress. If the cgm works for some people, then awesome. But not all people react the same to it. I’ve actually grown out my hair over the last year from shoulder blades to waist as a dry haired gal just using drugstore products, doing pre shampoos, tea rinses in my scalp, etc… and I use heat every 5-7 days. The blowout professor helped me out a lot. And your videos have been educational for me as well. I’d recommend lamellar water because it’s made a big difference in how my dry hair feels throughout the week.

@@pliktlyou could possibly go to a trichologist and get a professional consultation. They may be able to help with more knowledge of different hair types, and the science of what works and what not. There are some salons out there that specialized in curly/wavy hair as well. I think a lot of Black hair care methods tend to be very nourishing and helpful. But they may be too heavy for someone with hair in the type 2 range. I guess it depends. I’ve heard some ppl with 2c/2b hair say that the actual CGM is too much for their hair so they need to narrow it down so it doesn’t weigh down their hair. I went the heat styling route because my hair is genuinely stubborn and wearing it naturally never gives me long lasting or stress free results. But I understand that heat styling isn’t for everyone. There’s a wavy/curly hair community on Reddit and I believe they may be able to help as well.

Love to see you try the curly girl method again since I last followed your journey! I know unsolicited advice can be annoying sometimes, but I've experienced some of the same problems you seem to have experienced/are experiencing with CGM. I have slightly coarser, medium to high porosity (bleached and natural), south indian, 2A - 2B hair. Here are some of the things I learned through trial and error with my hair, if you would like to continue CGM with different products and techniques:
    - 5 - 7 drops of rosehip seed oil in freshly washed, wet hair left my hair much softer than most leave in conditioners. (possible explanation: I think leave in conditioners have humectants, which can make your hair absorb too much moisture from the atmosphere, esp in humid climates.
    - less is literally sometimes more, especially when you end the war against frizz! my hair is down to the top of my jeans at this point, and i only use 3 pumps of leave in and a finger segment of gel on each side of my hair. I can actually run my fingers through my hair when it's dry this way, and there is still plenty of definition!
    - air drying your hair split down the back, each side resting on the front of your body instead of the back, makes a HUGE difference. This prevents the hair from moving around too much while drying. Try not to do anything too active while your hair is drying if you can!
    - get tangles out while rinsing out your conditioner, then officially comb through it (if you choose) out of the shower. I get less hairfall this way!
    - gentle scrunches can do more than firm ones! hair will only curl up as much as it's meant to curl up, so no need to force it. try to focus on swishing the product around for even distribution, and scrunch slow so no clump gets left behind! Just a few on each side should suffice, but feel free to experiment with this. It's just a time saver for me.
    - **this is for non-wash-days if you shower in the morning** take your hair down after a shower, split your hair down the back and bring the hair to the front. Let the hair settle for 10-15 minutes before deciding to refresh. Steam your hair has absorbed from the shower can do WONDERS as an automatic refresh, the waves just need time to reassemble into their positions! THEN if you want to refresh more, by all means :)
    - some products that are holy grails (and so much less drying than every other leave in/gel I've ever tried):
    1) LUS Irish Sea Moss Gel
    2) Ceremonia Guava Leave in Conditioner
    3) Love Beauty and Planet Avocado and Mango Conditioner
    4) any shampoo that works for your scalp! don't be afraid of sulfates sometimes!
    5) Rosehip Seed Oil
I know this is a lot, but if you decide to continue CGM, I highly recommend trying some of these at least once! Products and techniques are super personal and can definitely make or break your results. I love that you've been experimenting more with your hair and having more fun over the last few years. Keep it up! I love your videos!!

I dont mean to critique you or be rude at all so please dont take this the wrong way and only read it if you care to hear advice, this comment is gonna be long:
I dont know if you based your knowledge of the curly girl method on people with really tight curl patterns but (again, I dont mean to be rude) to my knowledge you seem to be doing almost everything wrong considering you have dry WAVY hair. Im gonna list the things I believe you could change to get better results:
-Youre washing your hair almost dry, if your hair is wet enough, conditioner (even the cheapest most terrible ones) makes it so you can basically brush out your hair with your fingers EASILY. If this isnt happening, you need more water.
-Anything that is heavy (like that shampoo) is probably a terrible idea for your hair texture. Try to use something light but hydrating.
-After you shampoo, making sure it lather and foams quite well, put conditioner with the praying method and then leave it for a minute, this is so it soaks up and its easier to detangle. DO NOT SCRUNCH THE CONDITIONER.
-If you dont have one, get a tangle teaser brush and after the minute with conditioner has passed, brush your hair gently from the tips going up little by little untill its all detangled. If you have enough water in your hair, this should be incredibly easy, if it isnt, you needed more water.
-After you detangle, you can scrunch it, its supposed to sound suuuuuuper slushy, if it doesnt, you needed more water. ONLY SCRUNCH IT A LITTLE BIT, like barely at all. Scrunching too much causes frizz and gets rid of water which you need cause your hair is wavy. To be specific, scrunch twice on one side of your hair, twice on the middle, twice on the other side, anymore is too much!
-Rinse the conditioner almost entirely with a looooot of water. Your hair need to be streaming water down your body kinda wet. Immediately before you lose moisture, take a drop of leave in conditioner and gently rake it through the ends of your hair. It needs to be a VERY LIGHT leave in and you need to use only a finger tip sized amount on your entire head. DO NOT SCRUNCH YET.
-DO NOT USE GEL. Gel is most likely waaaaaaaaaaaaay too heavy for you and does not allow your wave clumps to form. Use mousse. How much? A palm for half your hair, a palm for the other half should be more than enough. Gently apply it with praying hand method, barely touching the hair.
-Now its the time to scrunch! Gently scrunch the hair, you should still hear the slushing water sound, just a little bit less. Again, only a few scrunches, you dont need all that scrunching, if you scrunch too much youre gonna get frizz and break apart the waves.
-Scrunch each side just once more with a T-shirt to remove excess water.
-Leave to air dry and dont touch it if thats your preferred method but its always gonna turn out better if you diffuse it.
-If youre gonna diffuse, scrunch your hair into the diffuser bowl thing (idk what its called lol) while the drier is OFF, THEN turn it on for like ten seconds and turn it off before you move on to the next section and repeat till your hair is dry.
-Scrunch out the crunch only with 100% dry hair, with a drop of oil and do it gently.
You probably wont read all this but I just wanted to take the time to share things Ive learned if they can help. If you did read, thank you! I hope you try and I hope it works! Let me know if it does please! (only if you want of course). Have a good day!

Light hold gel (the one she uses in the video) has been fine for my wavy/curly hair. I've used it and it's very light hold, mixing it with water also helps.
Also clarifying and deep conditioning is superrr helpful for definition when your waves and curls have started to look worse than usual.
For wavy/curly hair, you can use shampoo, it helps to remove the build up which weighs curls down so easily. The low poo/no poo thing doesn't really work.

i HIGHLY recommend the shea moisture manuka honey intensive hydration mask and the leave-in conditioner from that same line (the brown bottles). my hair is extremely dry, brittle, and frizzy and the only products that seem to work with my hair are those. as my hair is drying i put it in a braid to encourage a uniform wave pattern (my hair texture varies a lot like yours) and to minimize frizz. if you haven’t tried them, i seriously think you should!!! loved the video

I have wavy hair myself and here are some tips that work for me. You can use your regular shampoo/conditioner and then just use the gel to scrunch. I switched back to my regular sulfate and silicone shampoo/conditioner and my hair felt less weighed down.
You can also alternate between wearing your hair wavy and then straight. I tried doing the CGM too and it was so exhausting to follow all of the rules. Your hair looks great wavy again and it will be fun for you to wear it like that from time to time.

To maintain my curls overnight and shield them from damage and breakage, I wear a satin bonnet. I gather my hair at the crown of my head to minimize slipping. Then, I ensure that any stray or wispy hairs are securely tucked in. This has been my routine since elementary school, and it might be beneficial for you to try it too-it works wonders! Oh, and by way I am 49 so I have been doing this for long time. Oh, just make sure it is silk or satin.

My hair has been dry and frizzy like yours, with waves. But it is even less curly. I finally got rid of the frizzy ends by using the hard water clarifier Ouidad water works, and Jessie Curl Aloeba conditioner. Jessiecurl is super nourishing, I even got over moisturized by using their deep conditioning treatment on my hair several weeks in a row (this product is not recommended for more fine wavy hair, but I tried anyway since my hair is so dry). For hold, layering products is critical for me. Jessiecurl products layered gives soft touchable hair and hold that lasts but lets out a lot each day, but I have only tried the Spiralicious and Gelabracion so far. Curlsmith gives unpleasant to touch hair that last better for a couple days before my next wash. I layered Curlsmith Multi Tasking Conditioner, Invincible Volume Mousse, Feather Light Protein Cream (got rid of frizz), In Shower Style Fixer.

So i wanna thank you a lot!
When i saw your first video about your hair journey, it inspired me to change my routine.
I knew i had curly hair but didn't know what to do with it, so I would cut them short, despite wanting them hip length.
In one year my hair got so long I was amazed. I also discovered cgm thanks to you and was discovering my curls.
Now I realised i don't like long hair, so I keep them at an acceptable length, and still do the cgm, but sometimes straighten them. Ive also lightened them and will be doing henna this week.
So thank you for making me discover cgm and most importantly to love my hair and don't be too harsh with it.

  • @vince0wl
    @vince0wl Před měsícem +1

I have the same hair type as you, like wavy, straight and curly thin hair that like to get tangled and frizzy.
As many people say, don't be afraid of silicons!! Also you used waaay too much gel, I'd recommend to wash, condition and then with still very wet hair you can go with leave-in conditioner, brush your hair to distribute it and then you can go with mousse or gel (or both), but make sure to not use too much! What thin hair hate the most is being weight down by too much products: you destroy your wavy pattern and your hair get dirty very quickly.
Also to finish gently pat your hair with a towel and then pls you don't have to air dry, you can use a diffuser, at least for the roots, or else it will take days to dry help.
Btw I noticed that brushing my hair in the morning if they're too tangled and then wet it with a spray still works to get some waves back and makes my hair look more soft.

I have wavy hair and I tweaked the curly girl method to work for me! I try not to use sulfates and silicones most of the time but do use sulfates to deep cleanse. I also shampoo twice. I don’t use curl creams and gel, I find that it weighs down the waves rather than define. I just use a light mousse and hair oil. I also scrunch carefully not all willy nilly and only a couple of times. I find too much scrunching makes my hair frizzy and messes with the natural curl pattern.

Some say it’s very damaging for your hair, so I couldn’t get the courage to try it for a few years. But I decided to give it a try, because I’m so tired of spending time straightening my hair for it to get freezy the moment I step outside. I'd really recommend a bonnet or silk scarf pineapple. The normal pineapple up stretches the back, and our nape hair is thinner and finer so prone to tangling.
And for refreshing dryness you should try adding a lightweight hydrating product, after spritzing with water

Use a heat protectant after and if need be put some gel in if you need to just a small amount. Do the praying hands for that.

My hair is currently similar texture to yours (bits are slightly curlier, but overall similar) and I absolutely comb my hair before refreshing it on the second day and it doesn't seem to affect it badly. When it used to be curlier (my hair goes through phases...) I didn't comb it to protect the curl pattern. But I've found that with the more wavy pattern combing it is absolutely fine and it helps distribute the natural oil throughout the length of the hair and away from the scalp, giving me more 'use' out of a wash.

I always feel like if one has to put in THAT much effort in order to have nice wavy or curly hair, it might not be the right method for them at all. Maybe I am wrong, I don't have CURLY, only wavy hair, but I can literally do whatever and it will always have the exact same bouncy wave pattern. I really only need a few layers and they pop up naturally. If I wanna define them, I add a product that's a hybrid between a gel and a leave in conditioner and that's it (it doesn't have to be a specific product at all, just something that tames frizz and defines). I can brush my hair when it's dry and still have the same wave pattern. I can do everything wrong in terms of the curly girl method, still have the exact same wave pattern. Which is why I do prefer just going with shorter layers and mid length hair instead of long hair all cut to one length (THIS will literally erase the wave pattern and leave me with almost straight hair). If I want my hair to look more straight, I simply just weigh it down with oil OR blow it out straight (I never use high heat though max heat will be around body temperature). I choose hair cuts for me that do enhance the wave pattern without any additional work put into it. I tried the curly girl method and had a way more tight wave pattern that almost was a curl pattern but didn't like how it looked on me and also didn't like the huge amount of effort being put in. It's not my cup of tea and I definitely prefer my hair as it is. I CAN get frizzy hair, but that's not extreme, I can easily use a tiny bit of hair wax and smooth it out. What really messed with my hair though was bleaching it to white blonde. Having brownish (or bronde) hair naturally, that really is a bit stubborn when it comes to coloring or bleaching it (it doesn't take bleach or color too well, so I either need a very strong bleach powder or a rather high volume developer which will lead to a certain degree of damage), that caused major frizz on my hair and made it impossible to grow my hair past the point where the neck starts to curve into the shoulders. I am currently using plant powders (including henna, but not only) to color my hair (brown) and that does indeed take away the frizz a lot in my case.
I do have fine hair, medium density, very springy/bouncy in the root area and my hair in general isn't hard to deal with, unless it's severely damaged. I do understand if one has coarse and curly hair that needs specific treatment, I know people with that hair type and I have seen the difference correct treatment can make, but for me personally, it isn't even an option to use the curly girl method. I am way too impatient for it and prefer quick and simple ways to deal with my hair. Regular shampoo, conditioner, sometimes a mask, a bit of hair oil (2 drops only) and that's it (most of the times, unless - as I said - I wanna define my waves a bit more).
I don't wanna say that people should all stay away from putting more effort into their hair, not at all - do whatever works for you. But consider that some praised methods might not be the right thing for you, might not give you results you actually like and might not fit into your lifestyle. The very best thing to do imho is to get a hair cut that matches your hair's natural structure/texture, whatever that will be, it makes a HUGE difference in terms of maintaining a nice appearance of your hair. I by now HATE one length hair cuts on myself and even now that I am growing out a pixie cut, I make sure to not grow out too many of the existing layers, because that will not create a look that I like.
What I also wanna mention is, that one of my friends who has 3b curls, very high density and VERY coarse hair, had the very best results when using products with sulfates AND silicones. His hair would turn into a flat, yet tangly and fizzy mess when he tried the curly girl method (with approved products) and he almost shaved his head but then used the exact same techniques with different products and suddenly had the most beautiful curls, volume, no frizz and lots of shine. So also consider that you might need different products to make things work for you. I can tell you if he would be using the products I use (all natural cosmetics, lots of oils, containing glycerin etc.) his hair would be a mess while I have beautiful results with these products. I CAN use silicones too, but I don't have to. (In general I can use a lot of ingredients that you typically wouldn't use on fine hair, but mine for whatever reason doesn't get weighed down by them or stringy or greasy. Which is one more reason to not just blindly follow any recommendations but test out what ACTUALLY works for you.)

The plop method helps with volume and reviving the curl pattern! I have similar hair but thicker and curlier. But no matter what I do it feels frizzy and coarse without using heat. Also i think you used wayyyy too much gel haha. I think your hair type would benefit more from a mousse or light gel.

2:35 if you have a dry and sensitive scalp like me, using a head massager like that could actually make it fall out and make the scalp irritated and hurt really bad
