  • Friends, power and honor, in and of themselves, are not a bad thing, but we wreak havoc when we ask for them in the wrong spirit. When we beseech the Lord with our desires, let us ask for what God wants for us rather than what our egos have determined to be good.

As a lifelong Evangelical-Protestant, until 2 yrs ago...I am constantly surprised by the interesting and impacting commentary on Scripture, Bishop Barron brings! I’m 78yrs old and have spent years listening, studying and trying to apply the lessons found in Scripture. Thanks be to GOD for allowing me to discover the rich beauty and truth to be found in the Catholic Communion! Most especially, at the table spread by Bishop Barron!

Amen to that. His videos on the rosary shed more light on scripture. With the rosary, there are things that we call mysteries. Those are events in the Bible that Jesus experienced. You say the rosary with five different mysteries. Either the joyous mysteries, the sorrowful mysteries, the luminous mysteries, or the glorious mysteries. If we are saying the sorrowful mysteries, the mysteries are all events that took place before and during the crucifixion, the last one being the crucifixion itself. As you say the prayers, and there are quite a few, there will be a point when Bishop Baron tells a little bit of the story of the mystery. And that can be interesting. The luminous mysteries, those are my favorite. They are different events that took place during the life of Jesus, during his ministry. The first one is his baptism in the Jordan, the second is the wedding feast at Cana, third which is one I find quite wonderful is his presentation of the kingdom, the fourth one is the transfiguration, and the fifth one isThe lords institution of the Eucharist. Someday when you have half an hour to use up, listen to the luminous mysteries or the sorrowful, they are quite wonderful.

I wish this simple message could be understood by all seeking power. To lead is to serve. To serve is to do the Will of another. In this beautiful sermon it is abundantly clear to lead one must serve the Will of God not the Will of the individual. This necessitates humbleness, wisdom, and patience and trust. All which will be given to the individual only if they approach from God’s perspective not their own!

About power Think about P. Francis recent designation of the Beatitudes as the passport of the Christian. When that passport is given the hard scrutiny at the gates of the Kingdom, the first line is , Bessed are the powerless. Like the vast majority of God’s children . Clear as a bell. What comes first is primary in importance. Like the First Commandment. It also provides the overarching identity of the passport holder, in secular terms analogous to one’s nationality. At the same time as confirming identity, this designation conveys what one is not….a member of the dominant social group who cling to the values of said group. In Christ’s time the power lay with the Roman overlords and their local bureaucrats. Today in the so called “free world “ oppressed by selfish institutions of many kinds, the only refuge is to “ come out from amongst them” and claim the spiritual kingdom of meekness as our true identity.

As I was listening to a homily such as this one in Church today, I was thinking of the famous Russian stage director Konstantin Stanislavski, who is reputed to have said to the actors he tutored, "Love Art in you, not yourself in Art." This means, if you're an artist, serve your calling to create great art; Do not use art just to fulfil your hunger for fame. I thought of this as a great analogy to the question of serving God's calling present in the Mark's Gospel.

When I think of this story it always brings to mind our life long politics. Not the ones who get in and get out, but the 50 year politicians and say they’ve given their lives in service. Very few have done it for service, they do it for glory and their real master, greed and money. This is so repugnant to me. They will all eventually reap what they’ve sewn. All praise should be to The lord our God.

Therefore I offer You the most precious of all my possessions: the next 24 hours that You give to me, I offer back to you. Sanctify them, the good, the bad, their sorrows and joys, that through them I may know You better, be more open to the leading of Your Holy Spirit, and may gain a greater will, knowledge and power to obey You better today than yesterday.
I have found my attitude and therefore my day tends to go better as I remind myself Who is the King and who is the subject. And of course, there are some prayers that God delights to answer. So again, thank you, Bishop Baron, for these words of encouragement and faith.

But there are good ways to use power, and honor can be a good thing, with great examples cited. And there's a good point made on the delicious irony of the Gospel that Jesus comes in power on the Cross.

Your wisdom Bishop Baron, truly always makes me go deeper in my faith- to be truly powerful is to be like a small child, completely open, vulnerable and humble allowing God’s will to guide - not always easy!!

I am ardent follower of Bishop Barron. He is a spiritual teacher for me. But I must mention one thing. As for India, Winston Churchill was a tyrant who was directly responsible for the famines and death of millions of Indians. He looted food and wealth out of India when we were in dire need. He oversaw the death of millions in Bengal famine.

Using power in the wrong way can have devastating consequences. Lives can be changed, and not for the good. It is particularly heinous when power is used by people who say they are Christian but act otherwise.

This teaching transcends Catholicism - though as Catholics how fortunate we are to have it available. It is a teaching for the ekklesia (gathering of all God's people in Christ). I love the reference of King Jesus on the cross with a crown of thorns and a thief on either side (could have been me). Our honor is to follow and serve a Servant King - and his Kingdom, giving freely love and substance to those in need. Holy Spirit, help us join those 24 elders who laid their crowns before the throne and said: "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being." Rev. 4:10-11. So grateful for faithful teaching of Bishop Barron and the Word on Fire team!
