Hello and welcome. This is the first video of many to come sharing my journey about returning to school with hearing loss. We will start with decision-making, the application process, and ways to prepare for returning to school.

I am not a hearing or ear specialist (Audiologist or ENT), however, I do consider myself an expert on my own hearing loss. I hold a Peer Mentoring Certification from Gallaudet University.

Also thank you for all your help so far you have encouraged me. Your right about the barriers and road blocks for the longest that's all I could see. Thanks to you and so friends I'm starting to find alternative ways to accomplish many goals I have in life

Hi DD! I just started nursing clinicals and I was put in a long term care facility instead of a hospital for my long term care rotation. I begged for something else since I live with my elderly immune compromised father, but I am a transfer student so I got last pick. The facility that is on outbreak precautions so everyone must wear an N95. I’m exhausted and getting headaches the next day after being there for less than 8 hours. I am straining to understand anything. We also have no access to any technology, it is all pen and paper/analog. Any tips for how to navigate this and stay safe/sane? It’s also my first clinical and I have zero experience in healthcare, so I really need this to learn basic health assessment skills.

Hi Kris, Oh yes, I know this all so well. The N95 masks makes it difficult for everyone and even worse for someone with hearing loss. If you are comfortable be sure to educate your preceptors about your hearing loss and needs. Long term facilities can be overwhelming for sure with the patient load. One strategy that has helped me is to be mindful of each task. Multitasking may result in potential errors so take one task at at time is crucial. Mindfulness is extremely underutilized in our culture but is super important. You are human, not a robot. I often have to remind myself to practice what I preach: balanced diet, hydration, sleep, and exercise. I take every opportunity to walk during breaks to take off the mask(s) and breath in fresh air outside as well as listen to birds to distract my mind. Do not work during breaks! Nurse and students are famous for this. At the end of the day, stretch your neck and shoulders to reduce tension headaches. Nursing school is hard so be easy on yourself, you will learn as you go. Everyone started somewhere. Be proud of how far you have come and go forward...."you can do anything you put your mind too!"

Question I am going to start school in November for Clinical Medical Assistant . I am hard of hearing I have BTE Singnia hearing aids. I wanted to know if there is a stethoscope that can connect to my hearing aids?

Hi Sade, do your hearing aids have T-coil activated or do they have bluetooth? T-coil HAs connect nicely to the Thinklabs stethoscope via direct audio cable or streamer and the Littmann CORE stethoscope connects nicely through bluetooth via phone app all the Eko.
