  • A low-income family is suing Habitat for Humanity of Greater Vancouver for allegedly breaching an oral contract promising them a path to home ownership. The couple says they signed papers and started paying an interest-free mortgage issued by the non-profit group, but now fear they may never actually own the property they live in.

If you're one of those people who are saying that they are ungrateful because they got a home for free: go back to the beginning and replay it again until you hear the part in which the story says "the mortgage they got". A mortgage is not free. If you still think it is, call your bank and ask how you can get a free mortgage as you hear the rep laugh at you at the other end of the phone.

This isn't the first time H4H has been in a dispute: not giving copies to people, using pics without permission etc. I went with my sister.... she knows I will ask questions that she wouldn't or gets flustered. I asked them a specific question, representative told a falsehood and I pointed out that it was in the paperwork. They wanted to use my sister and her 3 children in advertising and our older sister, husband and 2 sons were very well known for building homes, condominiums, townhouses and apartment complex's. Needless to say, my sister went into an agreement with our older sister and her oldest son. Problem solved. Never sign a contract without knowing what it means/that you won't get a copy of. Period.

It looks fishy to me that this family asked for the paperwork they signed and more than 6 years later haven’t received it. That’s not normal protocol in Canada. They may be right that they were misled intentionally. If this wasn’t true, before this aired I’m sure habitat for humanity could have made a stronger rebuttal. I would say the same thing if they were both Canadian born and non minorities. Something doesn’t sound right, and it’ll be interesting to see whether they win this or no.

I agree with you that nothing is free, but if this family had been given their signed paperwork, a lot would be clearer. If they weren’t given their paperwork, that looks really suspicious to me. It also is in poor taste for HFH to be using their pictures to sell this story as a success when the reality is completely different. So it seems fishy on multiple counts really. And again, I would say the same if this family were Canadian born and non minorities. With the weak response from HFH, I’m a bit concerned that there may be truth to what this couple is alleging. But we will see whether this couple wins or no - perhaps more facts will come to light over time that aren’t presently in this short clip.

Since when is Oral Contracts guaranteed and who's word are we supposed to believe? If it seems too good to be true it must be. They can't afford the house? It's doubled in price already....sell it and get a new house somewhere else in another town if you have to....they would be lucky having paid off their entire mortgage in only 5 years. After 15 years I'm still paying for mine. As well this will cost tax payers for the legal fees AND if they win will cost someone else their new home. That's what I call selfish.
