Yamaha Silent SLG110N - Shadows, Reinhardt, Jobim mix!

  • Jez Broun plays his modified Yamaha Silent SLG110N nylon guitar at the Bath International Music Festival 2013 'Party in the City' - a quirky blend of latin and gypsy jazz and 60's pop mixing Shadows with Django Reinhardt. A couple of songs are spliced with a dubbed studio recording to give a clearer sound quality of the Yamaha than the multi directional video mic. A rather improvised gig to a small audience at the beginning of the evening while other musicians set up their equipment! www.woodomain.com

Good question! The spruce face insert (which from a solid spruce guitar front) hides my electronics (backing track Tascam digital recorder) and is attached to the body using Chemical metal resin lugs with tiny screws into the metal Yamaha frame. The more I play this guitar the more I love it. Gorgeous with the nylon strings.

Nice to see a fellow woodworker/guitar player. It's like I'm looking in the mirror with your taste in music and your approach to woodworking. Subscribed!

Thank you Steven - that is a really heartening comment especially as I work mostly on my own except when I rarely get out and play music! I hope you continue to enjoy my channel. I try to post new videos fairly regularly.

where did you get the top half of your guitar ?
I have just bought the slg130nw but have no thumb rest which messes up my playing style

+FOSbrothers It looks like they just got a custom bit of wood fitted in there. Just ask any joiner/furniture make to make one :)

+Glenuig "They" is me! I don't think its a job for any carpenter/joiner as there is quite a lot to it - check out my other video that shows how I did it. The top is arched and is made from spruce from an acoustic guitar front : czcams.com/video/YxES-PAyq1g/video.html

Would you say that the guitar feels authentic and realistic?

    • @WoodomainJeremyBroun

Robert - I wouldn't be playing it if I didn't think that. It has a lovely tone and is very easy to play.

Yes I would say the tone is remarkably authentic. It has a tiny spruce sounbox and Yamah have achieved an incredible mix of electronic and acoustics, but also the choice of amplifier is crucial and this Samson 18 volt portable is really warm and rich. Its a good marriage.
