I worked in a recording studio in East Detroit from 1992-1996 where George Clinton was a resident artist. I recorded, programmed, and edited with George.
In the back room were all of the 24 track master tapes of Parliament Funkadelic's career.
George had this tape for me one night. I didn't recognize the title. He wanted a Show version (minus George vocals) for a party coming up. He realized I didn't know the song by its title, so he watched, smiling, as I threw up the faders one by one. When that "Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-o-o-ooo" smacked me in the face, he laughed because he knew that I recognized it now.
To mix it with the guitar solo it required running the entire tape twice with some tracks muted for the first pass an different tracks muted for the 2nd pass. Then edit them together.
It was cool to touch a piece of history like that.

Parliament didn't "turn into" Funkadelic, they both existed at the same time, releasing records on different labels and under different contracts, but with mostly the same musicians in both groups. Parliament records tend to have a smoother R&B sound, while Funkadelic records are typically harder and funkier. There are also more groups that fall under the same George Clinton P-Funk umbrella like Bootsy's Rubber Band, The Brides Of Funkenstein, Parlet, and The P-Funk All Stars.

    • @fmw63
      @fmw63 Před 23 dny

Actually they did “turn into” Funkadelic (namewise) because of some legal issues with the name and their record label. The Parliament name came back after those issues were resolved, but then they were 2 different styled groups, using the same members… 🤣

I was in the 9th grade (that's what they used to call it before this middle school lingo came out) and when I tell you we couldn't believe what we were hearing it is no exaggeration. Once a month they held a Friday night dance at my Jr. High School called Sports-night held in the school gym packed with students and when the DJ put this song on there wasn't anyone standing against the wall trying to be cool. The DJ would always play the extended version which was over 15 mins long and there was a lot of funky teen sweating going on. This song, One Nation Under a Groove and Theme from the Black Hole (Parliament) were all bangers.

From Songfacts - This funk classic tells the story of a guy who meets a girl at a party and has her dance for him. He's blown away when she does "The Freak." "Deep" was a favorite saying among George Clinton and his crew. In 1978, Funkadelic's offshoot Parliament released a song called "Deep" on their album Motor Booty Affair. On this track, the lady is not just knee deep, but totally deep, which is all consuming. Disco was winding down at this time, but still very much alive. George Clinton survived the era by staying true to the funk. He said "(Not Just) Knee Deep" was intended "to rescue dance music from the blahs." This mission statement appears on the album cover.
Philippe Wynne, who was one of the lead singers of The Spinners until leaving that group in 1977, sings on this track. He was part of the P-Funk collective around this time. Junie Morrison, who is listed as a keyboard player on the album and as the arranger on the single, clearly had a big role in creating the song (he is listed as a co-writer on "One Nation Under A Groove"). Morrison, who was a member of The Ohio Players before joining Funkadelic, told Red Bull Music Academy: "I created 'Knee Deep' using a drum machine, Fender Rhodes, Steinway Grand, Mini-Moog for the lead and bass lines and a Gibson L6S for my jazzy guitar solo. Bootsy [Collins] added his drums at a later date. In fact, Bootsy was also the drummer on 'One Nation (Under A Groove).' Michael Hampton added his monumental guitar solo to the Knee Deep mix some time later, as well. Although Bernie Worrell is a phenomenal musician, contrary to popular belief, he did not perform on "(Not Just) Knee Deep."
On the album, this runs 15:23. The single was split into two sides, with Part 1 running 4:25 and Part 2 coming in at 5:20.
In 1989, De La Soul sampled the intro to this song on their hit "Me Myself And I." Other rap songs to sample it include "Nitro" by LL Cool J, "Funky Cold Medina" by Tone Loc, "Who Am I?" by Snoop Dogg and "Dre Day" by Dr. Dre. This was the second #1 R&B hit for Funkadelic, following "One Nation Under A Groove."

George Clinton had a huge roster of musicians and singer that he would juggle as different bands, so a lot of overlap with the groups. Some of this came from lawsuits from the multiple record labels his different groups were signed to. There is a movie on the history of George Clinton that gets into all the stuff George got into and frustration of band member too. As I remember it Funkadelic was more the Jam Band heavy on the instrumental side versus Parliament being more of the vocal song based band. Both bands could get out there but it was Funkadelic especially live that could take things to another level. Later all these bands mixed together and today more known as The P-Funk All Stars.
George Clinton is quite a character and still with us, he would be a great person to try and get for one of your creator videos.

    Hey, J.
Since you grew up listening to classic rap, I'm surprised that you didn't up on the fact that De La Sol sampled from this song for their song, " Me, Myself, and I".

"...funk with hot sauce on it", PREACH lmao! I just love that reference Amber, it perfectly describes Parliament's special brand of funk and why their songs are timeless.

A master jam!! My much older sister wore this song out (along with other Parliament Funkadelic aka P-Funk jams). When I really listen to the lyrics as an adult, I was shocked at how raunchy the references were! I told my sister she had corrupted my young mind😂. I also found a 15 min extended version of this song on CZcams! It's still one of my favorite P-Funk songs.

I have to say I did a little dance when I saw this title on your channel. And it's no surprise that I kept dancing during your reaction. I was late with discovering Funkadelic. But I can't blame myself because I wasn't born yet at the time of most of their songs.

By this time former lead singer of The Spinners Phillepe Wynne had joined the group. "I got ants in my pants and I need to dance ". He didn't say twerk. He said it didn't work, no! This group started in Plainfield NJ. They just renamed Plainfield Avenue to Parliament Funkadelic Way! George Clinton also gave a sizeable donation to his former high school.

I was 14 years-old that summer, and browsing through a record shop in downtown Toronto when I first heard this classic. Was hooked IMMEDIATELY and bought it on the spot. Next song of theirs I heard was "One Nation Under a Groove". They have so many classics, but the first two (first two for me, at least) will always be my favourites. ❤❤
