Jamaica, Queens is what this song is about.
Indeed!!
So did I @@es4242
Her name is Toni Smith and unfortunately she has died, a great talent.
Tony, help me request that Jay and Amber react to Kleeer's "Intimate Connection" being that Jay says he love the funk.
@leroywilliams6380 Running Back to You by Kleeer is my favorite!❤
@@leroywilliams6380now THAT is a heavy “baseline”
@@leroywilliams6380 Kleeer had great songs "intimate Connection" , "Taste The Music" and "Tonight" are just some. Klique is another group they might enjoy. "Honey (I Want To Be Your Lover)" is my favorite by them.
She on some Chaka Kahn!
"Thighs High (Grip Your Hips and Move)" was a R&B/Dance hit for him!!
On todays song - Toni Smith - vocals, handclaps, Tom Browne - trumpet.
On studio track, pianist Dave Grusin, 10 time Grammy Award Winner.
She recently passed away
I LOVE Thighs High!
I never realized THIGHS HIGH was Tom Browne also.
THIS!!! I'm gonna do a separate comment on Thighs High to double the chances they see it - they need more Tom Browne in their lives!
i was hoping Browne's "Jam Fo' Real" would be as big but didn't quite happen.
A Funk classic with the late Toni Smith on vocals. Many people at the time thought that was Chaka Khan singing...even Chaka said: "When did I record that song?" jokingly.
I was about to write the same thing, glad I read the comments.
@@sassymess7111 Great minds think alike!
Same here the first time I heard it I thought it was Chakah.
Fun fact: Tom Browne is also a pilot. 👨✈
Toni Smith on vocals! 🔥🔥🔥
I know she sounds like Chaka Khan. But RIP
She would’ve been cold solo
Jamaica Queens, NY that’s what it is. Rip to the vocalist Toni & Bernard Wright on piano.
I’m so glad you guys found this video. I knew you’d get a kick out of how much fun these guys were having in the studio.
Finally, I’ve been waiting for this forever. I love this song.
Oh man, this is my childhood! This song dropped in 1980 and we were all grooving to this! Couldn’t have a summer party without this song! Thanks guys it’s been years since I heard it but definitely made me smile. 😊
Heard it lots in the summer of 1980 when it was a hit here in the UK and it reminds me of languid days in the summer holidays then, but this is the first time I've seen a video of it. Better late than never!
This is one of those songs I could listen to all day.
Yup “Thighs high “ should be your next reaction to Tom Browne . He’s mainly known as a jazz musician.
The was 🔥🔥🔥on the radios, the stereos, the boomboxes , the rides, the dance floors , the house parties, and the skating rinks!!!!!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 The early 80’s!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥We used to say the lady singer sounded like Chaka Khan!
That was so true Chaka really sang it. It's live here on CZcams!
She's got a definite Chaka sound/vibe!! 🎶💜 Toni also does a great song called "Oooh I Like the Way it Feels. So, Chaka vibe all around. It's time for more Chaka...maybe this Female Friday?!? How about Chaka Khan, "Do Ya Love Whatcha Feel"? 🎶💜
This is one of my all time favorite grooves!! This will ALWAYS get the party started!! 👍🏾
Armand, help request that Jay and Amber react to Kleeer's "Intimate Connection." I hope you know this song as well.
This one pulls me back to middle school!!! OMG!! All the horns, the bass, the vocals!! FII-YAA!!!!
Skeezer, help me request that Jay and Amber react to Kleeer's "Intimate Connection" if you know the song, you the bassline is funkin' sick.
Thank you for reacting to music that so many other reactors just don't. We need to keep these gems alive! This was the song in the disco that as soon as you heard that opening trumpet, everybody was heading for the dance floor.
Indeed
With the quickness!💃💃
This song will never die!
For the culture! ✊🏾❤️🖤💚✊🏾
Truly one the list of Blackest songs ever made. Lol. Happy Black Music Month!
@@rhondaatkins1776 💯✌🏽
🇬🇧 Well, now this is a real blast from the past, have not heard this in years and years! Ty to whoever suggested it. 👍🎼🎶🇺🇲🇬🇧
Let's hear it for Jamaica, NY.!
I was at a graduation party this weekend and this was the first song to get me on the dance floor! Toni Smith came through with the vocals!
This song is classic funk and will always be the SSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTT.................
How could you NOT bounce to this?
you'd have to pretty much be dead inside not to , i don't know about everyone else but i miss this kind of music so much because todays " music " is straight trash .
Bernard Wright on electric piano and synthesizer playing that vicious bass line. He would have his own hit, "Who Do You Love"...
WHAT?!?!?! I never knew!!! The bass line makes this song.
Check out Hoboglobotribben by Bernard Wright
@@1960317 Bout to check it out now
Amber, go back and watch your eyes when that trumpet led in, it was priceless. I knew it would get you.
I've suggested this song many times, glad you got to it.
This song got EVERYONE up and if you couldn't get up, you were probably chair dancing like I was now, at 69 yo.
This is one of the best ever when it comes to funk, and I'm so glad that I was young when I was!! It was the best music of our lives!!!
🎵🎶I feel it inside my soul, let it get into you. Jamaica Funk, that what it is. Funkin for Jamaica🎵🎶
That was a blast y'all. Thank you. Funk me baby.
Tom Browne is the trumpeter in the blue shirt.
This was a massive tune back in the day, the vocalist on this was Toni Smith (Thomassina Carrollyne Smith), another great track by Tom Browne is "Thighs High (Grip Your Hips and Move)".
My sisters name is Thomasine as well, she was cold. ILL song
@@primeminister66 Such a great name!
So glad you finally got to Tom Browne, so so good! Also check out his songs Rockin Radio, Thighs High and Secret Fantasy. Amazing songs!!!
Back in the day, those who liked to groove would call this track: a Monster Jam!!!! Still makes you shake your rump today!
Now that you said "Shake your rump" made me think of Latoya Jackson's song from the same year as this, 1980. "If You Feel The Funk"......... Shake your rump.
@@Seagate1-dh6it Now that’s old skool.
@@AnthonyWilliams-ot1yk Old Skool is the only Skool worth having class.😄
@@lreed1040 Sho nuff.
Anthony, help me request that Jay and Amber react to Kleeer's "Intimate Connection."
Toni Smith your voice will be with us always. RIP Sweet Lady. Tom Browne is Master Class as is everyone on this. What a wonderful Funk Classic. "Thighs High (Grip Your Hips and Move)" and "Secret Fantasy" are two to hear by Tom. Since you enjoy Toni she had a solo Funk Jam called "(Ooh) I Like The Way it Feels". It's so Funky in its own right that you two would just love and will not be still in your seats. You must hear it along with more Tom Browne. By the way they are singing about Jamaica N.Y. a neighborhood in Queens N.Y.. Tom was born in Queens and Toni Smith was born in The Bronx. Tom and Toni also both wrote this classic together.
All-time favorite. Back in the day it took me forever to realize that they were talking about Jamaica New York. Lol!
Same !😄😄😄😄
OMG it's about time😂 I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one who suggested this song. KUDOS
I also have suggested in the past many times. Yes, finally and they totally enjoy it.
George Duke and Stanley Clarke - Sweet Baby.
They reacted to that very song about 6 months ago.
Such a good track
Tom Browne is bomb, whether is jazz or funk! Dance floor for me.
Rosemary, I'm over here too. Help me request that Jay and Amber react to Kleeer's "Intimate Connection."
@@leroywilliams6380 What's good, Leroy? Did they already react to Intimate Connection? It's my jam. What do i need to do? They should react to Thigh's High!
@@rosemarywatson1231 No Rosemary, only about five reaction channels reacted to Kleeer's song. And I requested the song on two of them. Let's encourage other subscribers to request the song. Jay and Amber always give the people what they want.
@@leroywilliams6380 Okay. I thought I missed it. Jay and Amber don't do enough r&b for me, but I watched them. I would like to hear from Bernard Wright too!`
@@rosemarywatson1231 That's why we have to request such songs, so that these channels could be more balanced regarding their reactions.
YES MY JAM!
I’ve been waiting for this song forever. I love it, so glad you chose it.
I recommended this a long time ago great tune. It also has a very young Bobby Broom on guitar who now is top Jazz guitarist. Also the late great Bernard Wright on keyboard Marcus Miller on bass.
You just don’t understand how big a fan I am of Tom Browne and the players he employed here 💯LOVE IT!! btw that drummer here isn’t the original on the recording (Buddy Wlliams OG) tho this drummer looks legit! Bass player is 19 yr old Marcus Miller and piano player is 17/18 yr old Bernard wright RIP
I suggested this song along time ago. Also somebody said that she sounded like Chaka Khan, which I think she does to some degree.
She does!!
I’m not sure, but I believe her name was Toni Smith
YEESS!!!!! Someone is feeding you the good stuff!!!!!! Jamaica, Queensz I grew up in the Bronx and Brooklyn; sister lives in Queens now 🗽🗽🗽 STILL play Funkin For Jamaica on the regular ❤️❤️❤️
FINALLY! I have been asking you to play this for more than a year. I had given up all hope. One of my favorite songs of all time.
Here's some other R&B songs from that era: Xavier - Work That Sucker To Death / Gap Band - I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance / Aurra - Are You Single / O'Bryan - I'm Freaky / Stevie Wonder - That Girl / Klymaxx - The Men All Pause / Stacy Lattisaw - Dynamite! / Jermaine Jackson - You Like Me Don't You / Bar-Kays - Shake Your Rump To The Funk / J. Giles Band - Flamethower / Chi-Lites - Hot On A Thing / Michael Henderson - Wide Reciever / The Temptations feat. Rick James - Standing On The Top
I haven't heard Hot on a thing since I was a little kid. Never knew it was the Chi-Lites. That group is amazing.
MV, you miss putting Kleeer's "Intimate Connection' on your list and the Gap Band song is titled "Oops Upside Your Head."
@@leroywilliams6380"Oops Upside Your Head" is not the title on the original album "Gap Band II" which I have. The name is actually "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance (Oops)". I just left off the parenthesis part. I think it was titled "Oops Upside Your Head" on some compilations though.
@@rochellelove3785 I think that was a comeback hit for them at the time. Another track from around then is "Crazy" by The Manhattans. Both groups were kinda known more for ballad hits than uptempo songs.
@Musicvegan01 My mom had pictures of them in a photo album when they performed in Germany. I was introduced to the music at around 3-4 years old. Always liked the music and learned names of artists while growing up. I miss old R&B, funk, or soul groups.
I never heard this before.....but this is really cool 🎉
The cap is a cycling cap. And on the keyboard is a young Bernard Wright who had a hit called. Who Do You Love? 🔥🔥🔥
This song is the bomb ! Such a great groove.
oh boy our dance parties were lit!
Ooh, Deeep track. So funky, you have to get up for this one. ✌️
Jamaica, Queens!!! Represent!!! Babuh-Baabaay!!
This song never stops funkin' and rockin'!!
40 years from now I bet this track will be bumpin'.
Hell yes!. You have to listen to Thighs High….like tomorrow.
A few more in the funk vein, Parliament-funkadelic - aqua boogie, knee deep and atomic dog. Also, The Gap Band - Beep a Freak; Oops Upside Your Head, Humpin. Slave - Just A Touch of Love, Watching You, Slide; Mass production - firecracker; Michael Henderson (bassist) - wide receiver; The fatback band - backstrokin’
This list is 🔥 🔥 🔥. Knee Deep is my favorite PFunk song!!! Sample worthy for sure. This list was the sounds of my childhood and life. Hey DJ just play that song 🎵 🎶

Summer/Fall of 1980, it was everywhere! Thighs High, Secret Fantasy, Fungi Mama, Brighter Tomorrow.
This was one of the songs Soul Train used when they were going to commercial or doing a sponsor identification.
This was the jam and still is!❤
You make me Smile thank😢
Should say thanks not thankenmoje
Some popular songs from the same time period that sound great with this 1979 song are "Stuff Like That" by Quincy Jones, "Some Love" by Chaka Khan, "Bustin' Loose" by Chuck Brown and the Soulsearchers, all from 1978, and "Reach For It" by George Duke from 1977.
YESSSS!!!!!!! The Godfather of Go-Go Chuck Brown!!!!!!!
FUNKIN' FOR JAMAICA!! Garaunteed to make you move!! Again, the instrumentation, the ad-libs....A feel good song, no matter where you are from!! When that bassline drops....!!! Ooooowweeee!! And her energy and vocals can't be overlooked!!
It's a rare day when y'all play something idk.....excellent....ty
This was skating music back in the day!
It’s a trip because the truth is that the Betty Boop cartoon character was based on an actual female black entertainer …
I didn't know that WOW 😲
It surely is.
J and Amber,
When this song came out, in the late 70's, it became an instant, funk, classic! This song is a mainstay at family picnics and barbecues. 🙂
Raychell, help me request another funk classic that's Kleeer's "Intimate Connection."
Absolutely loved your reaction to "Jamaican Funk" by Tom Browne! This track is such a gem, and your excitement brought back tears of nostalgia for me. The song itself is a quintessential piece of the early UK 80s funk and jazz scene, blending smooth grooves with that infectious rhythm that makes you want to move. Tom Browne was inspired by the vibrant sounds and experiences for them of a place called Jamaica, in Queens, New York City's music scene, which truly shines through in this track. I was only 9 years old when it was released in the UK, but I vividly remember laying down some moves whenever my older brother played the vinyl record - which I still have today! It’s amazing how, even after all these years, this track can still fill a dance floor at any club or party. Thanks for the fantastic reaction, Rob Squad! Keep the great vibes coming! x
Tom Browne's music is underrated and deserves more attention; "Thighs High (Grip Your Hips and Move), "Mr. Business", and "God Bless the Child".
OMG I love this song, brings back great memories when I used to meet up with the girls going to the local club's in Essex England fantastic nights outs so glad you loved it to guys.😊❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Jamaica Funk was from N Y. All we need now is "Dusic" by Brick (That's some killer funk) This group is made of mostly teenagers.
dazz better
Finally, another one I've been suggesting for ages! 😁
His style is funk/jazz fusion, and he has slower songs that Amber might enjoy.
Geeez, I wish you guys would listen to the jazz I've suggested, along with sophisti-pop which has a lot of fusion. 🙁
More by Tom Browne

Love that you mentioned cities but during this era Dayton, Ohio was big on the map for a short period. They had some bangers out of that region especially groups like Slave
I've been waiting for y'all to get to this!!!

Funk, Jazz and R&B fusion..... Sick!
In reality it came outta Miles Davis called "Fusion"..
Mixing different genres together and making it work. 😎
This was THE jam back in the day . Speaking of Parliament Funkadelics check out ATOMIC DOG Jay will love it !!!
And Knee Deep!!!
One of my all-time favorite songs. 👍🏾
One of my absolute favorites!!!
A favorite since the 80s. Had a lousy day but watching you two groove to this and groovin' myself brought the biggest smile to my face. Thank you!
Man this takes me back to skating to this & also going on the dance floor & got my groove on. I love my era of music!!! I also miss it. ❤🎶
Wow!.. what a vibe!
Mind if I share a quick story with you?.. I was literally on the dance floor in Philadelphia, PA, when I first heard this song : one song was phasing out, and then came that blast of the trumpet, followed by that funky bass line ... wow - or as we used to say in the 60's, "gruu-vee"!
All of us folks on the dance floor seemed mesmerized by the groove!
Curious, how some songs will immediately transport one to a specific time, and place, and memory ...
Soundtrack of my high school days. This is one of the songs that got me off the wall and in the floor.
That trumpet blast at the beginning would create a stampede to the dance or roller rink floor. I wish that was captured on video somewhere!
Loved that reaction! If you loved that one, I'm sure you'll also dig Reach For It, by George Duke like some other commenters have suggested. Funky, with the fun, lively banter ... but also features an ICONIC bass solo!! You guys gotta do that one soon.🤩🎸🎹
I love the song. When I was little I used to think it was Chaka Khan singing. Toni was a treasure. All the performers in this song were a treasure.
On the Synthesizer [Prophet Polyphonic], Electric Piano is Bernard Wright [with the shades on] [RIP] & female vocalist is Toni Smith [RIP]
This is one of the BEST jams! We grooved at the roller rinks to this song! And, I see that "Thighs High" is mentioned! You need to do a reaction video to that one too! The BASS and everything is SO FUNKY!!!
Thigh is High I wanna grip your hips and Move is a must reviver from Tom Browne
Yeah! Finally. How about some more Sly and the family stone - family affair, everybody is a star, dance to the music, stand!, hot fun in the summertime, you can make it if you try, if you want me to stay, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)
You both are great dancers!!
This brings back soo many happy memories.
Along with White lines and Don't push me(forget name of band) Also Street life by The Crusaders.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Don't Push Me song is called the Message.
@@rochellelove3785 Thanks for the info
Still a jam!
This song came out around 1980 or 1981. The song is about my hometown of Jamaica Queens in NYC. Tom Brown is the Trumpeter, the great Marcus Miller was the bass player, who has produced for a number of artists, mainly for the great Luther Vandross. Marcus is also from Jamaica Queens and is still very active in the music industry. The keyboard player was, Bernard Wright, also from Jamaica Queens. He had a huge R&B hit in the mid 80s called "Who Do You Love", You should definitely react to that. RIP to him. The singer was Toni Smith, from the Bronx NY. RIP to her.
This was the jammjam in NYC back in early 80 everyparty boombox and roller skatin rink // its actually about the young musician scene coming out of Jamaica queens in NYC !!!
ASWELL AS HER VOICE,DAMN SHE CAN DANCE SHE WAS MY FIRST LOVE AS A TEENAGER❤❤❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🤜🤛🇺🇸🇺🇸
You guys would really like the mellow funk from the group B.T. Express 1) do it ('til you're satisfied) 2) Express.
yes!
Hello lil' family,
The singer is Toni Smith (Thomassina Carrollyne Smith -> R.I.P. - passed away on January 28, 2020,).
The bass guitar is played initially by the legendary Marcus Miller (but not credited in the album); if you watch attentively, the bass player in this clip pretends to play. It was a “bœuf” (improvisation) between Dave Grusin, Tom Brown (came in the studio with the theme of the song in mind), Toni Smith and Marcus Miller.
This clip (1080p) is available on my YT channel too.
Peace, folks. ☮👈😎
More funk - George Duke "Reach For It" - the band Lakeside's songs: "All the Way Live" & "Something About That Woman" / the band Slave's song "Snapshot"
When you ask for a definition of funk
I'm recommending The Godfather of Go-Go Music. Chuck Brown and The Soul Searchers for Jay. They are FUNKY, SOUL! Check out the song Bustin' Loose...(horn & drums). Many good songs by Chuck Brown, Family Affair, and Run Joe...💕
Run Joe was my favorite Chuck song for decades...until I heard Chuck Baby. I miss the Godfather. He has hits for days. Been listening since I was in Elementary school in DC.
@@rochellelove3785 Bustin’ Loose came out I was in 7th grade. I miss him too. So lucky I got to see him as an adult. Thank you DC!❤
Been waiting for this one! One of my all time favourites. ❤ So glad you enjoyed it. 😀
I recommended this to you a few times, though it was some time ago. Since you've never listen to one of my recommendations I ultimately gave up. Now maybe you'll do Teena Marie doing "Behind The Groove", Carl Carlton doing "She's A Bad Mamma Jamma", and the Zapp Band doing "More Bounce To The Ounce" for more killa funk.
