      @@Sammy-mp1wr It's actually because Hidden Path who was the ones in charge of porting CS to console, they also worked on L4D2 doing model and animation work. They also maintained CS:S for Valve in like 2008/2009. More than likely, Hidden Path did a lot of the weapon animations for L4D2, or at least maybe the preliminary animations which Valve later cleaned up a bit.
      Some background, during 2009, Valve was working with Hidden Path on CS:S and if you didn't know CS:S was the inspiration for L4D by Turtle Rock in like 2005/2006, basically they made some CS:S maps where the T's had knives only and the CTs had guns, like a zombies mod. It looked very similar to the No Mercy campaign of L4D in terms of aesthetic, a city scape of apartments you went through with a set of streets and alleys. By 2007 all of Valve was on board making L4D as a project after playing it internally and seeing the idea's promise. By 2009, Valve was working on L4D2 and likely after having Hidden Path's help on CS:S they asked them for some help to release L4D2 quicker, likely just getting their animators to make some quick weapon animations and environment models for Valve to later refine for full release.
      Hidden Path's animators actually have good weapon animations in terms of ideas, they're quick and to the point, pretty good too with accentuating the aspects of the weapon, with some flair to them, but they look really rushed and don't have a realistic weight to them (they're a bit floaty, that's the word I use to describe them), which is what L4D2's animations sort of have as an element to them, except L4D2's animations have more polish than these 2011 animations in an early build of CS:GO. By 2010, Valve wanted to make a cross platform port of CS:S for consoles, as they had just announced Portal 2 as a cross platform title with consoles and since Hidden Path was maintaining CS:S, they pretty much got Hidden Path to do most of the early work, before some of the Valve team stepped on board to help finish and release the game in 2012.
      It's amazing CS:GO is even where it is today because for a long while, Valve completely ignored it really and dreaded working on it. They always thought CS as a game was sort of not interesting and too simple. Yet it's their most successful title from a mod and has spanned 20+ years. It's incredibly simple as a game, but continues to be relevant because it has a lot of complexity in terms of mastery. Only now is Valve giving it the love after years of neglect by porting it to Source 2 and it reaching 1.4 million concurrent players. For years, Valve looked at DoTA as the eSport and title worth any attention. If only Valve knew how great TF2 was too as a product, but sadly it lost it's lustre after years of neglect and no pro scene to keep it relevant.

      @@xarigama6466 yes , stated in the credits of 2012 version of csgo there were 2 mocap actors for cs so the player's action from the 2011 alpha was raw mocap data , they later polish these in the 1.03 version which uses the animations we sees today

      They basically didn't set the appropriate amount the bone modifies the arm mesh, and that's a consequence.

    I hope they mix up the animations a bit in CS2, i think p2000, p250, Five-Seven and Glock should have different animations, like 1.6 did, it adds to the visual character of the weapon.
    They should do it with Nova and sawn-off too, the latter should have something a bit less professional, due to it not being a pro weapon really, like character loading the shells with the grip hand instead of the off hand.
    There should also be different reloads for partial and empty reloads, while I'm a fan of partial reloads on magazine weapons being faster as a mechanic, they could make both reloads the same length for the sake of gameplay consistency

      1- even highly trained soldiers cant always put the mag in the gun at this speed... especially with gloves... even if You will be training over and over again... You will never hit all 100/100 perfect mags... extra points for handicaping yourself by not looking at the bottom of the gun/ mag slot...
      2- ... since they know that, most of them probably dont even try because they risk of hitting the gun with the mag and wasting even more time... its always better to put it close to the weapon and help urself with your fingers

    It looks like they used motion capture to get the direction and movement that they wanted and then went back and cleaned up or recreated it by hand to get a smoother result in the final release.

    So they went from horrible animations to acceptable ones? Damn, I don't know what is it, but while Valve does good games, 1st Person Animations always look horrible from them, it's surprising how they haven't nailed them in almost any instances, only some L4D2 guns have good animations, otherwise from Half-Life 1 to CSGO, they have lacking 1st Person Animations.

      You have a point, but it's way too exagerated. No, they are not lacking, they are just stiff. I do agree that, cs reloads are a let-down, especially when stuff like tf2, or heck, even hl1 exist. Half life 1 is indeed old and outdated, but there's just a vibe to it, same goes for every valve game, the animations are either slow, but satisfying or fast and confused, since in the majority of valve games the protagonist is not a professional and is probably handling guns using common sense and not practice.

      @@Yjg-malaeouron.-uhfn they indeed feel stiff, like, *VERY* stiff, but they also feel like they're almost bare minimum, like whoever animated them either didn't know what they were doing so they just did enough to make them passable, take the XM1014 from CSGO/CS2, it just looks like he's flailing the gun and not holding a gun's recoil, it's silly, or when reloading it looks like he's just moving the shells in circles around, doesn't really look like he's reloading but like he's playing pretend lol, there are more examples like this.
      As for the "in the majority of valve games the protagonist is not a professional and is probably handling guns using common sense and not practice" part, it looks like the opposite funnily enough they consistently use more moving parts that aren't really common sense or they move them in ways that would mostly require training or experience with that specific gun (which is actually pretty neat, though mostly unfitting on a game like L4D), for example the SCAR from L4D2, the reload has the character pull out the mag, insert it back and then press the bolt release, how would some random survivor in the beginning of an apocalypse know what the bolt release does? Most would just move the bolt itself to load the chamber because that's what they always do on movies and games (at least at the time), so they do reload more professionally, which is wrong, at least I like it but it shouldn't be.

      @@M0D776 Well, i'm just going to say, thank you for being polite and sharing and strenghtening your view on this topic.
      Second off;
      Yeah, i couldn't have said it better myself, i despite the reloads in cs, though, for some reason they feel oddly good in their own games, but outside of their own titles ( Mainly Gmod for me ) they're exactly as you described. As for the pistols reloads, yes, they're akward, clunky, and unnecessarily 'angry', like, i've never handled a gun but i don't think that someone would need to grip onto the slide with such sheer force, though the only acceptable one is the p2500's, maybe just for my bias for the gun, oh and let's not forget about the USP, it looking like something out of an entirely different game. The shotguns all have the XM1014's problem; Tilted unnecessarily, handled like a softair gun and just straight up lazy animation, but that would be expected out of a 2000's game, right? Point is, CS:GO spanned over many eras of gaming, but it never updated to bring itself up to date, and now that CS2 released, it just feels like cs:s but again, just better graphics but same everything else, and even less soul, they couldn't even be bothered to make the reloads correct.
      About your response on my "Valve protagonists aren't professionals", i sadly must agree, but your l4d2 example could be easily dismissed by someone who just sees it and it's roots as a "fun, adrenaline inducing power trip with a well-developed back story", which is mostly what it is, but it still doesn't excuse it's context. About the other few Valve games, we can't really say, for example, Gordon got experience, since most guns in his arsenal got downgraded or were the exact same, since in the SMG reload, he just goes mag in, mag out.
      I'm just going to agree with you; Valve game reloads are not bad, but outdated, of them being niche-ly good.

    I get the signature animation of "set it and forget it" style but at least make an empty reload with pistol frame remains pushed back or something
    The 2021 pistol reloads are more streamlined but positioning is an issue, 2011 doesn't cover the crosshair view when reloading so they got that part right
    Bungie and Ubisoft FPS knows how to animate reloads without shoving to your face and block your view during the heat of the moment

      Because of the thing you had experience you seen it too much, so anything new appear you just like it just because it new.
      It's a unconscious bias against thing that you already experience and this happened alot.
      Cause you can just look at any Cut/Unused content and see all of the exact same comment without the context of the developers why they was Cut/Unused and just want it because you hasn't have it yet.

    The old animations matched the old 3rd person animation perspective of reloading. The new ones don't match the POV animation with the 3rd person animation.

    New reload sounds are so quiet and unsatisfying. While I know the majority of old sounds were literally from the first game, at least they delivered on the satisfaction factor.

    Gotta point that reloading sounds with time became better but i dont really like new shooting sounds. And yeah new animations is probably better. Espesially pistols which had an absolute same animation and sounds of reloading, even there's still some pistols have same animations but they improved them and made new sounds to them.

    Somehow old GO had better handling sounds. It's like Valve forgot that all those bolt release buttons are attached to chunks of metal with springs that ram home with a decent amount of force. A bolt ain't gonna make a tiny click, it's going to make a metallic smack.

    2011 is more realistic but also more distracting, it has details like the weapon shaking when the agent is holding the weapon in 1 hand, or the agent having to position the mag more carefully to make sure it is inserted properly.
    2021 is much less distracting and swift but also lacks a soul if you know what I mean
