  • Gladys Horton (1945-2011), the original lead singer of the Marvelettes, performs her "Love Songs Forever" Medley" at a Doo-Wop Society of Southern California concert in City of Industry, California on February 23, 1992. Ms. Horton continued to perform until 2009. The six songs included are Marv Johnson's "Whisper", the Dells' "Oh What A Nite", "In The Still of the Nite" from the 5 Satins, Carla Thomas' "Gee Whiz", "Tears On My Pillow" from Little Anthony and the Imperials, and the Marvelettes own 1963 ballad, "Forever".

    great to hear her singing some of the doo-wop that she listened to before the Marvelettes. The background singers are excellent.

      In Glady's new book which was just published she states that she rarely got along with her background singers because they all wanted to be stars right away and could not accept their positions as background singers forcing Gladys to fire and hire background singers by the dozens.

      @@andy41501 Gladys Horton was Motown--nothing to do with producer Phil Spector who managed the Ronettes and married lead singer Veronica Bennett.

      @@ujimajame4601 So what! Damn near the whole Motown was deep rooted in Alabama. Thats why the marvelettes sound was so recognized and identified by the fans…its almost like something we actually knew.
