      @simplon--b6538 Před 6 lety +8

      There is not much A4 left in the revolution and evolution models. Basically the hull and the turret (A5 to A7 uses a newer turret design). There is even an upgrade powerpack for the Leopard 2, to free up a lot of space for fuel or ammunition.

    • @jonny2954
      @jonny2954 Před 6 lety

      Theoretically the revolution upgrade kit can be equipped to all Leopard 2.

    • @simplon--b6538
      @simplon--b6538 Před 6 lety +1

      No.
      Rheinmetall (MaK) produced about half of all Leopard 2 till the A4 version. All later versions are built by KMW.
      Rheinmetall is offering A4 upgrades, which don't require the change to the later turret model like KMW demands it.
      The armor is different, the whole turret is different from A4 to A5 and later.
      To upgrade an A5 or later with some components of Rheinmetall's demonstrator, KMW would need to implement them one by one OR Rheinmetall would have to throw all the KMW komponents out and replace them with their systems.

    • @jonny2954
      @jonny2954 Před 6 lety

      I ment the base model, most A5 and A6 are upgraded A4 so they could just convert them back to A4 to install the revolution kit.

    • @agentmonde1
      @agentmonde1 Před 6 lety +4

    • @TheKnaeckebrot
      @TheKnaeckebrot Před 6 lety +9

      it wont fire against rounds smaller 40mm ... the sensors can be potentially damaged (like all the other sensors/systems on the outside), but to do that one would either need a very high accuracy or a saturation with long bursts or multiple DShk's ... and it would be suicidal to do this against a Tank that can kill you with one HE round from several kilometers :D

    • @mkrump9403
      @mkrump9403 Před 6 lety +6

      DShK is the russian version of the M2 .50cal... Every outside sensitive electronic parts will be affected for every tanks made in this world...

    • @IonoTheFanatics
      @IonoTheFanatics Před 6 lety +9

      The best armor piercing round in existence for DShK will not scratch the actual armor of most armored vehicles that are rated to withstand 14.5mm rounds if not larger (tanks certainly would not care, but even many IFV today are immune to low caliber autocannon rounds with applique plates and not just frontally).
      Will they damage the sensor or sight? they can... aimed correctly at least, but what the tank and vehicles fear the most is not being poured by volumes of machine gun rounds... because if someone is dumb enough to do that for any real length of time... they are basically dead since that's basically announcing their presence... right in the face of multiple armed armored vehicles.
      what they fear the most is a sudden attack with anti tank weapon capable of penetrating the tank armor which is sudden enough that the crew could not react to it in time, and if they penetrate... can cause casualties to the crew.
      And that is what ADS or APS are for... they are not meant to make the tank or vehicle invulnerable to all weapons, they are meant to provide an additional protection layer against the most dangerous weapon against tank and armored vehicles, to provide the crew time to respond and react.

    @wigon Před 6 lety +1

    There are many questions not asked by these interviewers are basically promoting the international defense industries (that's the primary goal of the Jane's organization). I can already see one major weakness which is that this system does not seem designed to handle top-attack ATGM's (like the Javelin and Spike ATGM's), guided mortar systems, and RPG's fired from rooftops. It is also unknown whether these systems will defend against an old but surprisingly effective anti-armor device- The Russian RKG-3 anti-tank hand grenade. These ancient grenades were used to surprisingly lethal effect in Iraq against light armored vehicles and MRAPs. Another concern is that the sensor and radar systems seem like they are very vulnerable to shrapnel from artillery, grenades, and HE shells as well as sniper or HMG gunfire. What does seem like an improvement over other APS systems like the Israeli Trophy (or at least older versions of the Trophy) is the ability to defend against volley-fire strategies. So while these systems are by no-means perfect protection, they should substantially reduce the number of losses from ATGM's and RPG's in any future conflicts. I also suspect that the issue of top-attack munitions will be addressed in future upgrades as that seems like a fairly logical area for upgrades.

    • @wigon
      @wigon Před 6 lety

      Theoretically, yes, but I've not seen an armored vehicle using such a configuration which to me is rather strange.

    • @jonny2954
      @jonny2954 Před 6 lety

      The Leopard 2 ATD shown in the video has roof-mounted sensor and countermeasure units.

    • @wigon
      @wigon Před 6 lety

      @Jonny. Yes, it does, but the countermeasure warhead component does not seem to be positioned to counter overhead munitions or top-attack mortars or ATGM's. That being said, the Turks could certainly use this current system as their Leopard 2's are being annihilated by YPG Konkurs ATGM's. Then again, very few (if any) tanks can take a side hit from such tandem-warhead ATGM's and survive.

    • @jonny2954
      @jonny2954 Před 6 lety

      They are positioned to detect and counter top-attack ATGM aswell as SMArt155 and other indirect fire top attack systems. One of the upward facing countermeasure can be seen here: i.imgur.com/JUkaixE.png
      Besides that, turks won't use this APS. They have AKKOR and germany wouldn't do a technology transfer of the most advanced APS in existence to them, especially not now.

    • @wigon
      @wigon Před 6 lety

      @placeholder That's simple. Because it gives the broadest range of coverage when mounted on the roof. However if you look at the countermeasure units in the video, they are NOT positioned to counter warheads coming from straight above the vehicle such as guided mortars, guided artillery, and top-attack ATGM's like the Javelin and Spike. I'm sure the Russians have a top attack ATGM and guided mortar rounds by now that they haven't unveiled.

    • @jonny2954
      @jonny2954 Před 6 lety +3

      It seems to be a DIME (dense inert metal explosive) principle. Instead of using metal plates or pellets in order to defeat the threat, the system might utilize (heavy) metal powder, i.e. tungsten powder or tantalum powder. When fired by a directed blast against a threat, the powder will behave similar to a solid metal body, in areas where powder denisty and velocity is high (so in the area near the launcher). However the powder will spread fast and the decelerate, this means it won't pose any danger after a distance of a few metres (to infantry) Either that, or composite flyer plates. It's not exactly sure how this system works, however it is sure that it is currently the safest and fastest system of its kind (was tested sucessfully against even APFSDS already in 2007).

  • @catouticensis9000
    @catouticensis9000 Před 6 lety +1

    MBT are not so important nowdays, when conflicts aren't tank vs tank but armoured vehicle vs guerrilla. Better highly protected, huge firepower IFV. Big calibers are less important. The MBT quota in armies should be reduced (but not eliminated - it's still impotant maintaining a mix of firepower and range).

    • @catouticensis9000
      @catouticensis9000 Před 6 lety

      Anyway, against MBTs, better missle/rocket saturation than hi-caliber MBT rounds - MBTs aren't budget-friendly and logistics-friendly too. They're blitzkrieg-friendly, though. Still, provided that you need mix and flexibility of solutions, money is better invested in aerial warfare for that.

    • @catouticensis9000

    • @jonny2954

    • @catouticensis9000
      @catouticensis9000 Před 6 lety

      Jonny, I do talked about combination. But the thing I remark is: how much an MBT costs vs an IFV? Against guerrilla, IFVs are much more cost effective. And how many symmetric conflicts vs asymmetric are there nowdays? Symmetric and asymmetric scenarios aren't the same, the mix of weapons you need is different. Moreover: how much 120/125 mm calibers are effective vs guerrrilla and in urban warfare? Yes, they are, but you don't need much of that, while 35 mm can do a very good job in lots of cases. Another good solution is the 105 mm Stryker, with no turret (so low profile and exposure). I DON'T SAY: NO MBTs. I say: MORE focus and investment on IFVs, less on MBTs.

      APS wasn't introduced by the Armata series lmao. They exist since the 1970s. And ADS outclasses Afghanit by far.

      i agree on the expensive and somewhat on the innovation but quality they are top notch, if i look for good quality products first country that comes in mind is Germany second one is Japan.
      that being said it doesn't seems like they are innovating like they used to in the past. like it was in WW2. and the prices let say are far from competitive.
