      we took the spelling from one language and the pronunciation from another...classic English lmao. In Italian it was "colonnelo", then french made it "coronel" which is where the pronunciation came from. Eventually french changed back to "colonel", but both spellings and pronunciations were already in use in English. For whatever reason, people couldn't decide between them and went with the pronunciation from one and the spelling from the other 🤦

      Yacht is pronounced as "Yaat" on the standard American Language, that lady is referring to british enunciation.

      Yes, over here "squirrel" can rhyme with "girl." Or it can be 2 syllables as in the UK, but still with the first vowel the same as in "girl."

    'Colonel' is a word that does not really follow any rules for pronunciation, but it's a beautiful word when pronounced.

      It follows the French pronunciation rule, while it is spelt as "coronel" in French, and "r" in French is pronounced like "h".
      The spelling "colonel" comes from the Italian word "colonnello".

      1) English was not even 2nd language, it was 3rd. And it was introduced us in 5th grade.
      2) our teachers did,
      3) it was 80-90s we didn't have internet.

    “Yacht” is actually really easy for Germans to pronounce if you know how it is pronounced, because the letter “j” is called like that in German 😂 if we don’t know how to pronounce it though, one will pronounce it in a really different way because it has the same spelling but another pronounciation in German

      The letter "j" is called like that also in polish. And polish word for yacht is... jacht. But we do pronounce all the letters and I would never thought of saying it as "jot"... Where the hell that "ch" has gone? And people says that polish is complicated - we do pronounce all letters in words xD

      They have spellings that make no sense at all. Choir should be spelled cwior, and the c in yacht should disappear.

    Choir and colonel should have different spellings. Actually English could use a spelling reform in general. I didn’t realize turtle could be a difficult word to pronounce.

    I can pronounce all these words accurately. I have lived in Australia for 40 years. The Australian accent is somewhere in the middle between UK and US. My grandfather was my dictionary when I was learning English as a teenager, in his childhood years my grandfather learned his English in a secondary college established by people from UK in Tianjin China in the early 1900s, and he completed his medical training in the US.

    Why ignore the ch in yacht? if they’re not needed, then why be there?
    and how is colonel became “kernull”? why is English so inconsistent?

      The word ‘colonel’ originally comes from the Italian word ‘colonnello’. When the French adopted that word into their own language they changed it to ‘coronel’.
      Eventually the English adopted that word from the French. Over time the English spelling changed, but the pronunciation didn’t.

    I thought she’s going to name “tortoise”. This one used to trick me until my English teacher corrected me yrs ago. I used to pronounce it as TOR-toys which is incorrect of course. Since then I learned the correct pronunciation as TOR-tus.
