  • The picturesque Barbana is a small island located at the northern end of the Grado Lagoon.
It's an oasis of peace and of ancient traditions, the site of the "Santuario di Barbana", a well known pilgrimage destination.
A community of Benedictine Monks from the Benedictine Congregation of Brazil lives on the island.
Tradition says that the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine Maria dates back to 582 A.D., when a violent sea storm threatened the town of Grado. When the storm subsided, an image of the Madonna, which had drifted on the water, was found on the island. The patriarch of Grado had a sepulchre built here to thank the Madonna for saving the town.
Since 1237, on every first Sunday of July, there's a boat procession followed by the people of Grado to the Barbana Island, to renew the ancient vow to the Madonna, that saved the town from the terrible plague epidemic.
A regular boat service, leaving from the Schiusa Canal, links the Island of Barbana to Grado. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes.
The island can also be reached by private pleasure boats and there is a tiny harbour.
There's a cafe on the island serving a simple fixed menu.
