    this is the best explanation I've ever seen. it starts of simple, then adds a new concept each time rather trying to cover it all in one go - makes it easy to understand and follow.

      DaveClass47 no doubt this is a fantastic video. It doesn’t account for how slow i am to pick stuff up. Ive just swopped from OO modelling where i used all insulfrog points to O gauge where im being forced to go elctrofrog. What is the minimum i need to do to enable me to get going as a dcc running system? Probably not fitting point motors either. Is it just the insulated fish plates?

    Always a brave person who tries to "easily" explain electro frog points! As I always run a dropper to EVERY piece of track, I use the bridging wire to add a dropper to the track bus as well. This powers the points and doesn't rely on a fishplate connection. You did a lot of work producing this video, thanks and well done.

      @@DeanPark Yes, I found it confusing at first too, but once you're successful in looking hard enough for quality content like this - it's actually quite simple. Some subjects in the hobby are in dire need of such explanatory videos, so what you're doing is most noble - that being the fact that you're helping the hobby move forward. You saved me from getting all flustered and saying "Screw it - I am just gonna use hand-laid stuff even though I'm not good at that.

    Finally understand the “mysteries” of the electro frog. Thanks Dave. I couldn’t install the motor under the baseboard because a support is in the way. I have, however, been able to make a surface mounted version by fitting it to the Hornby “hut” base and covering it with a Scalescenes Weighbridge hut. Also discovered I don’t need the insulated joiners because the points are routing the track into an engine shed and a turntable.

    This is the best video I've seen to explain this. A lot effort I reckon? When people ask me I'm going to send them here. With O gauge hand made point combinations you have to do this so you learn anyway. Coming back indoors into On30 / 0-16.5 I'm surprised even how many don't know the importance of the insulated joiners. Just to add ... if you attach flexible wire jumpers to the blades as well, the points will work for your lifetime.
    I only use electric frogs now on DCC. Don't tend to modify PECO, but with 3 ways and slips I think it's essential.

    Excellent video. I have been using the peco point motors for over 30 years and never had a failure when used with a capacitor discharge unit however my experience of the polarity switch is not as good. Mine usually fail to work after about 5 to 10 years. Maybe I have been unlucky or expecting too much. For the last 2 years I have replaced them with a Hex Frog Juicer as they stop working. No failures yet. You simply disconnect the wiring from the peco polarity switch and use the same wiring the Juicer to the track.

    Thank you so much for this vid. This is the first time I have used live frog points and I did not have a clue how to alter the points. The instruction sheet which came with the seep motor was no help with the point. I watched a lot of other vids on the subject but some of them did not have much of a clue either. Your vid is so easy to follow and I have now completed my first point conversion thanks to your vidio. Thank you so much.

    • @bryanlane62
      @bryanlane62 Před 5 lety

      Hi Dave,
      Absolutely, great hobby indeed ! I had a model railway many years ago in my parents loft. It was a different world back then in the mid-70s ! But one emerging thing that was exciting at the time was Hornby’s Zero 1 and I had a full setup of it with master controller plus three slaves. The modules were a bit flaky, but it was a great system, way ahead of its time and of course the predecessor of the amazing DCC that we have today. By early 80s, I discovered girls 😉 and inevitably that lead to the family years so the model Railways got packed away and have followed me from house to house through the years ! But I’m just four and a half years from retirement now and we’ve moved into a house which includes a room converted from an integral garage that will soon become a model railway room for me. Construction will commence in the next few months and will gain momentum as a retirement project. I “stumbled across” Dean Park thanks to a suggestion e-mail from CZcams, presumably owing to my interest in other model railway videos, and like you, I’m glad I did as I look forward to watching more of your videos to bring me up to date for the technology available today. Best wishes.
