adding this because i feel it needs to be said (or i really would have like to hear this when i finished uni):
what you do after graduation will very much depend on financial stability!!
some people will be able to afford to “eat pray love” after uni and others will have to hustle and work jobs that might not be related to what they studied and THAT IS FINE!! it’ll teach you just as much about yourself and what you want as anything ❤

Thank you for your talk about how it's ok not to know what you want to do after graduation and it's important to take your time and be gentle with yourself. I'm sure a lot of people can relate. I was so overwhelmed and lost after graduation and ending doing a 3 month gap year in the wilderness and it really helped me discover myself and find what I was truly passionate about. I also still watch Peruse Project and it's nice to see my favorite booktubers shout out each other

So, as a 47 year old, I can definitely say it's okay not to know what you are going to do. I've changed so much from the time I graduated college the first time. Yes, the first time lol. I have a degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Creative Media (Digital Film), and recently got my master's degree in film (screenwriting). Your tastes are going to change. Your life goals are going to change. It's really horrible for society to put pressure on people to know what they want for the "rest of their lives" straight out of the gate. It's okay not to go to university straight after high school. Take some time to look into different interests and develop new hobbies. You might learn something about yourself that is way more important than what you will learn out of a book. When and if you want to get a degree-its totally okay to have a career doing something completely different than your degree. The degree you got still has value. It's taught you critical thinking, responsibility, and so many other life skills I bet people don't even realize they are learning in uni. Don't let life become a race or a timetable. Live according to your own expectations. Not someone else's. I could go on and on...lol, but the main point is to do what makes you happy. No matter what your age is...all you have is the one life, and it's never too late to do whatever you want with your life. :)

I finally finished Crime and Punishment last year thanks partially to your encouragement. Not my favorite Dostoevsky (that honor goes to The Idiot) but there's a lot of great moments. Your friend is right about translation--even among the English versions, there are good and bad ones. And as for fantasy, as C.S. Lewis wrote, "When I was ten years old, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if anyone had discovered me. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly and don't care who sees me. When I became a man, I left behind childish things, including the desire to be very grown up." Love your take on things and glad to see a video from you whenever it comes out. Have a great week, Leonie!

The more people you talk to who are older than you by at least 12 years, the more you realize that a lot of people have no idea what they're doing. They're making it up as they go or being very adaptable to constant inconveniences and unsolicited, external changes, or having a general direction or destination and doing what they can to get close. Of course, there are many adults who make and adjust a five-to-ten-year plan every couple of years and know exactly what they want to do, be, and go at all times... some of them are quiet about it, others tell everyone who will listen. ^J^

Hi Leonie, my boyfriend is in his 3rd year of a PhD and he had to learn to put boundaries and say no to his professor, because he could see how he and the other PhD students only said yes to everything. And that only makes your professor (or team leader or whatever) see you as someone to just keep giving tasks to. When he started saying no, he had more time for his research and enjoyed the job more and his prof and TL started respecting him a bit more.
Just sharing so you have other stories about PhD jobs 🤗

Hey Leonie. Not a "friend", lol, but for your side-project idea, have you thought about writing a book? Doesn't have to be a long book, or the next fantasy epic - could just be a memoir of your experiences and what you learned through College and CZcams, for example. If so many people ask you questions like these, I'm sure you already have a sizable audience that would love to read a book from you. Just a thought!

as a native russian speaker who has read Crime and Punishment, i wouldn't say it's very dense and difficult to get through literary-wise (emotionally though, yes, i almost had a heart attack and a depressive episode while reading it), so looking into a different translation is definitely a good idea! hope you have a good experience with this book since it's one of my all time favorites hehe, and i can't wait to hear your thoughts 💕

When a booktuber goes from creating on the side and as a hobby to making videos for a living is usually when I stop following that creator, simply because I feel it's often very noticeable that they no longer do something they're passionate about but rather that it feels watching a corporation develop- not once did I feel like that while watching your videos! Even though you're now able to make a living from it it still feels like a FaceTime call with a close friend, and you can feel the genuine interest radiating from you, and I'm so thankful for that!!

As someone who has learned the hard way (within the last 5 years) and has felt the post-uni blues and has changed careers and jobs about 10 times etc - THANK YOU for this anaology! It's taken me this long to realise it and some days I am still shushing that voice in my head saying that I "should" know or that is putting me down in life and that I haven't achieved much.
I am back in a customer service/success role and starting to realise that maybe this is what I enjoy doing.
I'm the same as yourself, I love learning about lots of different things and I feel soon I will accept that my life and career will be changing a lot. If you haven't heard of the term "portfolio career" definitely look it up, it reasonated with me so much and feel it will be the norm in 10, 15 years time!

Leonie, few things 😅 a) please finally read the starless sea. I fell in love with the night circus like 10 years ago and got the starless sea at a similar time to you. I only JUST read it for the same fears you had. It was a 5/5 for me and i never give out 5/5. Its dreamlike. Erin's whimsical writing, and also just the way it is told is like witnessing a dream. Erractic but perfect. b) similarly graduated from STEM ( electrical engineering!) In december. I fortunately went into my dream job of a project planner ( and on Australias largest infrastructure project!) and I can say I'm finally comfortable. To all of you scared about post uni life, or if you hated uni like me, it can get better. My life did a complete 180 and I feel like I've found myself again!

This is such a great video! I feel like I already feel a little lost in the wild even though it's still my first year in university. But it's very different to school time because it's more free and independent. I kinda like this wide open desert but it's also scary and strange. It's good that at least we all feel the same and experience it in a same way ... we're all in this together... sry.
I love those deep conversations / talks. I've been following you since 2021 I guess and you're one of my favorite youtubers. You're videos are always so cozy, they feel like a warm hug.

This is a fantastic video. It's entirely accurate how you describe that moment after graduation, where you look out at this vast desert after leaving a rigorously structured system. And feel a slight sense of dread. Lol That's exactly how I felt when I graduated.
I also enjoy how you continued the analogy and come to realize that what you're seeing is a sandbox and not a desert. That's actually a great way of looking at adulthood! Try some things, play around, you will "figure it all out" at some point. Awesome advice.

Just recently came across your reading channel and got this vid recommended to me. Ironically enough, the only reason I've had enough time to read lately or even look up book recs on yt is due to a back injury caused by two months of doing nothing except sitting like a little Gollum at my desk, trying to write my PhD thesis (another irony - in the neurobiology field). So I can confirm from experience that everything you listed as a con for doing a PhD is absolutely true 🥲It consumes your life, your hobbies, while increasing stress and anxiety to barely tolerable levels. The academic community is also extremely cutthroat and instills in your head that if you don't let science consume all your free time, you are doing it wrong. Of course, it all depends on a person and a setting, this was just my unfortunate experience. But it's lovely to see someone being upfront about their priorities at such a crucial point in life. I wish you all the luck no matter what you end up choosing to do post graduation!

Something I did during Covid when I was in school and working and then when I was only working, but from home, I made sure to have a work-life balance by having a designated workspace and not doing work on my personal laptop. This meant when I closed work laptop at end of day and walked away from work desk, I wouldn't answer emails etc after. If you are self-employed and use personal laptop, try moving away from workspace and signing out of email and Teams so that you don't get notifications about work after say 5 in the evening.

the culture around PhD's (at least in my field, planetary science, in America) has really been changing and it's great to see -- every candidate I talked to when I was looking for grad schools really prioritized vacation and work life balance. Speaking of the graduating and not knowing what to do - I think what can help is to find a side job DURING studies. It doesn't have to be a lot of hours (if you have parents who provide for you) but just to start to learn how to operate in different environments, do your taxes, pay your insurance etc.
I study fulltime and work around 15 hours per week (I don't have any support from family) and I noticed that it made me way more organized and put together than many of my fellow classmates. I think that if I would solely concentrate on studies I would feel extremely lost at the end.
PS. Working and studying did not negatively affect my results. I put a lot of effort to organize and prioritize - with time to have hobbies and other stuff.
PS. I am speaking for myself and from my own experience only! :)

I started with my current employer a month before I turned 35, with no clue what I'd want to do when I grow up. Thinking 'it's government, it has to do with numbers and I'm good at that, let's just work and then hopefully find out'. I'm 3,5 years in and a promotion later, and finally have -sort of- an idea of what I'd like, but I still have a lot of time to find out. And it took me until about 3 years ago to find out how much I have been held back by that mindset of thinking I should know now for forever. So I totally agree: you're still young, loads of time to find out! (and I only have to look at my current manager, who has been 'ambtenaar' for longer than I am alive and has done about half of the jobs there are to do within our department, to know even I am just a kid with loads of time to find out haha)

My most important tip for Uni:
Find friends and integrate yourself academically.
The vast majority of people i know that have dropped out are people that didn't have a people to talk to around them. Fine friends that'll study with you, make sure you're professors know your name and face and try to seize as many opportunities they give you as possible

Howl's moving castle do not take place in Germany but in France, in the Alsace region (which, it's true, is close to the German border). We know it's in Alsace, as Miyazaki has acknowledged that he was inspired by the Alsatian town of Colmar for the town in which Sophie grows up.

The video that made me a subscriber of your main youtube channel is the one about "our declining attension span". I'd love to see more mental health/neurobiology related videos like this one. I feel that with your channel you brought together a lot of twenty-something women who struggle with a lot of the same issues - short-form content form addiction being one of them -, and I'd love to see more of your scientific-side to help us understand and address these issues. A lot of content about them on youtube is very "self-help" oriented, and can be judgemental in a way you managed to avoid completey in the attention span video.

I did a psych PhD, and honestly it wasn't too bad (although I did get sick of my topic!). I did like 11am-3/4pm on weekdays and took a day off whenever I needed. I think the experiences are very different depending on your field and university though, so it's tricky to predict.

Hi Leonie, thank you for the video and interesting opinions!
I just want to share my thoughts about what you said about work-life balance, because I think its a mistake to presume that if you work in a regular office its not easy to overwork.
Its not like "you are done working and you go home". It depends on the job (i work in IT but I think it counts as a "basic office job") and I can assure you that many people work many more hours than just eight... It got worse with working from home but even when you go to the office every morning, its so easy to stay 12 hours there without lunch.
I dont say its healthy, I just wanted to clarify the feelings and experience of a person working in this kind of job. :)

Regarding Crime and Punishment, I have an equivalent goal which is to read the Odyssey 🌊 I have the physical translated copy (unfortunately I’m not a scholar of Ancient Greek like in The Secret History 🦌) but am going to read along whilst listening to the audiobook to make it less daunting. Generally, I’m not very into audiobooks as auditory learning isn’t my forte and I’m very visual, so having the book but also listening should be a good experiment! I pinched this idea from a CZcams video called “Why you stopped reading” by Answer in Progress - would recommend! ☀️

I remember post graduation blues and how people don’t talk about how depressing it can be. I was not having a great vacation, I was stressed about finding a job, I felt trapped, and was broke. It was not so fun lol

My husband and I both very much appreciated this video. Since we are both retired from careers in education, we watched it from the viewpoint of the choices we made when we were your age. Your replies to the questions exhibited both insight and empathy.

Another translation of "Crime and Punishment" could be the key. There must be a reason you have such a hard time with it, cause I'm convinced you've read far more difficult books than that. I haven't read it but from what you said about "Neuromancer" , it sounds way more complicated. Do give it another try, "Crime and Punishment" really deserves its reputation. On top of that, "The Secret History", which you love, is clearly inspired by it.

I don't know where to start of what to do to learn, do you have any tips? or shows or other youtubers to watch? I love your videos and the calm vibe that you give off. This video was very helpful, thank you 🤍

One might say that Leonie Christel is only about one-twentieth as popular as is her doppelganger. I, personally, try to remain neutral - treating it as a family issue - largely because I very much enjoy the content of both. So, thanks very much, and as always it's very nice to see you again.

I read Crime and Punishment back in 2017. Tried reading it at school, but didn't go too far. It's better to read such books at an older age P. S. Russian is my native language.
I even made an entire video about reading in English when it's not your native language. Like you I prefer to read non-English books in my native language, however, since it's hard to find the right books where I live I had to go English. For example, I really wanted to read one Hans Christian Andersen's tale and the edition that had it was in English.
    P. S. Do you speak a third language?

The story is actually backwards in many ways he who is i, actually sweet kind hearted love with some spooky drollness but the evilness is merely the people's way of saying you d9nt have any aging in you and your good at this that this that soooo.... evil just might be a displacement of unfair to alot.
The only 1 who got that, very grand, sometimes we search for answers and when we find it its either a surprise or ohh..i guess that makes sense and then its a thought thats stays because you figured out something that more than 2/3 of the world doesnt know.😊 But hey you truly seek an answer, if im him than what are the others as my energy gets drained day in and day because im the only one who cares truly deep with a passion for the gender who i seen as splendor for awhile.
Blade.... now switch the characters and the storyline, i kno i kno how cruel. Well im awakened now, so lets just have fun on this gloomy jubilant roller-coaster of life thatll soon be scary awesone but a berry blossomed with plush sweetness.
PS... Dont worry so much as we all do, soon that invisible border will vanquish, if that makes sense😊.
    💙❤️👌✌️😇🧘‍♀️

I don`t know if it worth to write this, but I feel like I should. So, I really love your videos, they are very comforting and I love your channel's vibe - it's cozy, fantasy-ish and very-very nice. But I'm Ukrainian and every time you speak about russia or russia literature it's give me anxiety, it's make me feel bad. And I know for sure, that there are more of us, Ukrainian listeners who's feeling very uncomfortable in that moments.
I truly respect you and your choices. But it's so exhausted listen about "great russian literature" while your country and your home town are destroying by russian missiles
