    When you score clay to attach, you want to use some "slip" as a filler/glue. Slip is clay mixed with water into a sort of mud-like goop. It will fill the air in the score marks and fuse with the clay. A much more reliable way to attach clay pieces.

    Hey there! Two things - first, your clay is going to shrink as it dries. This will make your notes sharp. It'll shrink a bit more when you fire it. To minimize this - and prevent the little bits of clay on the inside when you used the drill for the tone holes - fire it to bisque first. Then you can use a grinder (such as with a dremel tool burr bit) to drill your tone holes and tune it properly!

    For future videos, use slip (a paste made of finely crushed unfired clay and water) to coat one side of the scored clay you are attaching to the other. It helps create a seal, prevent air bubbles and a form very strong bond.

    I've played around a lot with river clay and termite hill clay and what I've found works best is to slowly let it dry next to the fire, moving it every so often, making sure it's completely dry. After that I'd elevate it and put it in a pit with all the hot hot coals, then I'd cover the pit. I rarely get cracks this way but it does take longer

  • @SilverwingStudios

    As an ocarina player, I can tell you that you can tell the relative sizes and placement of holes for a simple 10-hole ocarina by looking at one. I can also tell you, though I have not made one before, that typically holes are cut before the two halves are put together. Mostly from reading about them. It's neat to see someone actually do it, though. People who make the nice ones by hand already know from experience what hole size goes where, and they make the halves around a mold to ensure that the internal sound chamber is the right size for the key they want the instrument to play in. That is a REALLY thick clay wall on that ocarina you made.

  • @Carlie_flower
    @Carlie_flower Před 4 lety +6

    When he stared adding the tone holes is when I stopped paying attention... The main sound hole should be on the bottom, there should be 2 thumb holes near it and the top is where the fingers go with about 10 holes(8 main, and 2 sharps/flats) that's your basic 12 hole ocarina set up. Use a tuner to make sure the notes are right and adjust the size of the holes to get the right sound. For a better idea of placement look up some ocarina playing videos and you will see what I'm talking about.
    This video is a great explanation of how to get the basic shape and how to get it to make the first sound 👍

    You could also very gently file it after it's dried you can almost leave a hole big enough for a cork in the bottom so you can uncork it and then clean everything up and cork it again. I think if you were gentle and you let it dry out and become greenware before firing it you could very gently file details into it

    I actually started watching this channel many years ago because of a clay instrument. I was creating a clay whistle and wanted more insight as to how whistle anatomy worked and searched up "how to make a clay whistle" but came across a pop can whistle made by TKR. Although it wasn't what I was looking for, it got me interested in his channel. But it's really cool seeing how a clay instrument (ik what it is but I wanna address clay instruments as a whole) made in this video is the video I was looking for, and got into TKR community in the first place :)

    The 45 slope should be approx 2/3 of the way up the wind tunnel...two thirds up from the bottom of it.. I learned that while making native american flutes... just picture how the wind is hitting the 45 and then picture what it is doing on the inside of the chamber as well as on the outside...(the circulation of it)...... picture the shape of the wind... ..the whole point is to make the flute resonate on the inside as well as on the outside... balance the pressures ..so that it vibrates... resonates... and also when drilling the holes start small because as you make the whole larger the tone will rise up... you don't want to start with an oversized whole... I also learned that the pitch of the flute is determined by the inside surface area... the less surface area the higher the pitch... hence drilling out the holes... the bigger the hole the less inside surface area... pitch goes up... thatnks for the video brother..

    Awesome video, one of the best ever on this channel!! Can I make a couple of suggestions? The sound hole (the big one that actually allows the ocarina to make sound) should be on the opposite side. There should be two thumb holes on the side with the sound hole and eight on the other side. I know this is a proof of concept, but now you need to go further! Make one that can play scales and is actually in tune! You've proven you can do it, it would be so awesome! You could just use a tuner app on your phone to get the right pitches, you probably wouldn't even need a ton more information. I'm really excited about this, can't wait to see the follow-up!!

    Haha nice video, but ceramic ocarinas are a well-established musical instrument. Great effort for being able to get a playable one made :)

    You should use Slip and not just water to seal pottery :/

    • @minhor24
      @minhor24 Před 6 lety +4

      You create slip when water hits clay

    • @imisaiahshaver
      @imisaiahshaver Před 6 lety +4

      Ya, that's why you add more instead of just using a very small amount so it can seal better

    To keep the clay from drying out, place a cup full of water with the clay in a closed container so the evaporation keeps the clay moist.

    When joining two things with clay don’t forget to score slip and smooth it’s less likely to fall apart
