How Miku came up with "PIGEON" while riding a train - (The pigeon of Keihan express, the symbol of the Keihan Express is the pigeon head mark. The design which has been loved from 1952 is said to be from pigeons at the Ishishimizu-hachimangu temple which is on the lines area. The pigeon which is an agent of god is looking over the safety of the passengers.)

Welcome to band maid! The best hard rock band on the planet. (Imo of course)
To answer the questions, they are a hard rock band that formed in 2013 and are the same members now that they were in the beginning (basically, I’ll get to it)
They are not an idol band, but not entirely organically formed either. Story time: Miku (rhythm guitar, back up vocals) was in a tiny idol band but it wasn’t the music she wanted to play, she quit that band and pitched the idea of band maid to her label. She worked at a maid cafe as well and thought it would be a cool look for a band. Management agreed to the idea and she began the search.
Miku found Kanami (lead guitar) online,l through covers she had done of other bands. Kanami joined and then recommended Akane (drums) who had done drums on some of her videos. Akane joined and recommended Misa (bass) who she knew from college. They started rehearsing and recording but Miku decided her voice wasn’t right to be the lead, so they looked for an additional singer and tried out Saiki, who was also signed to the label and she joined. Now they had a whole band and they haven’t changed since.
Their whole schtick is based on Maid Cafe’s. Their concerts are called “servings”, they call their fans “Masters and Princesses” like maids in cafes do. They all wear maid outfits, though two of them have never been the biggest fans of it and their outfits are barely maid like anymore. The outfits change every year or so as they get worn out through use, they even have an “omajinai time” in concerts which is better explained later.
They do not scream, they are a hard rock band, but they dabble in lots of adjacent musical categories. Pop, punk, metal, blues, prog, etc. They are always pushing their own boundaries and growing, but they make sure whatever they do is excellent musically and to date have no bad songs, and after 140 or so, that’s a bold claim. Good luck trying to find one that proves me wrong.

Band Maid self describes as a hard rock band. The whole range of rock, pop, punk, classic, emo, and hard. Definitely not idol, just an old fashion rock and roll band. 120+ song catalog, I consider over half as great. Certainly none are bad! A good showcase of their range is a 2 song in 1 video of Manners, and Black Hole. Bluesy rock to controlled chaos.

Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They can make you headbang, they can make you pogo, they can make you cry like a baby. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and world class musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.

BAND-MAID was formed organically and of their own volition.
Five professional musicians select their own members and sing and perform songs they wrote themselves.
They are a rare rock band in which all members are top-notch skilled.
They are the polar opposite of idol groups that are planned, set up and run by a company.
This song is not particularly hard among their works,
and they have a very wide range of musicality, playing harder and tighter songs as well as soft ballads and acoustic songs.

They're a hard rock band who dips into various other things like metal, punk - even jazz - as and when they feel like it, so you're correct that they're not as heavy in general.
Miku - rhythm guitar and backing vocals founded the group. Got in touch with Kanami (lead guitarist) who she saw on CZcams and who in turn knew either Akane (drums) or Misa (bass) - I forget RN - who went to the Tokyo School of Music with the other. Et voila - Band-Maid was formed.
The final piece of the puzzle Saiki (vocals) joined after Miku thought her voice wasn't quite strong enough to be lead in a rock band (although like the boss she is she sings several songs solo all the same).
The maid thing is from Miku who used to work in a maid café and thought the image of maid combined with their hard rock sound would be a fun juxtaposition. A couple of the other ladies were less enthusiastic about it (Saiki and Misa) and so they do have maid outfits technically but they're not the sort that spring to mind instantly and don't really give off the vibe. They have of course changed their outfits down the years. Initially there were 5 maids, two of them with rather stoic expressions lol.
Organically formed and after the first couple of albums, write all their own music etc. I'd humbly suggest going down the B-M rabbit hole. It's an incredibly rewarding and fun one. They have plenty of songs to suit most tastes.

Band-Maid, while incorporating metal in many songs, and do have metal songs, are primarily a hard rock band. They have a lot of rock, punk, pop and metal, as well as prog sensibilities. They don't have a specific subgenre because their variety is immeasurable compared to their contemporaries.

Well the bands founder was Miku (red rose guitar/vocals/main lyricist) who at one time was in a minor idol group called Lil Cumin with 2 other girls, but that only lasted a couple years before they broke up. While she was living in Tokyo, she had worked at maid cafe's. She thought the idea of a band playing cool rock music with the maid aesthetic would be a great example of "the gap". The difference in what you see and then your surprised at what you hear. As far as the formation of the band..... Kanami (lead guitar/main music arranger) was second to join after being recruited after she was found doing videos of her playing on the internet. Next came Akane (drums), she was someone that Kanami had played with before. The bass player, MISA, was brought in because Akane knew her from the music school that they both attended. The band was all set as a 4-piece with Miku as the lone vocalist. After a couple of shows, Miku decided she didn't have the proper voice to front the band. She stepped back as they searched for a new vocalist, enter Saiki, who was signed by the same agency as the band. Now they decided they needed another guitar player; Miku then began her journey into learning how to play the guitar under the tutelage of Kanami. This MV was shot at their 10th Anniversary show at Yokohama Arena back in November 2023 in front of @ 12,000 people. The okyu-ji (what the band calls their concerts, it translates to "servings" to go with the maid theme) was an incredible 3 hour 40 minute marathon of 33 songs. It was EPIC! đŸ€˜

No screaming. A little rap though. This from another post:
"Band-Maids Genre is Band-Maid. Rock, Metal, Pop, Alt, Prog, Punk, with Jazz and Blues for sprinkles. Different is another song they wrote for an anime.
Miku Kobato: Red rose, Rhythm guitar and backup vocals. Started the band. Started guitar when the first 4 members decided she shouldn't sing lead. She found
Kanami Tono: Lead guitarist, main composer. She worked with and is friends with
Akane Hirose: Drummer extraordinaire. Akane attended the Tokyo School of music and did some work with
MISA: Bad ass barefoot bass assassin. She likes her whisky! Together these four played a few sets before they decided they needed a stronger singer. Enter
Saiki Atsumi: The Queen." She's the youngest member. They are NOT an Idol group. and in many portrayals of houses with maids, the woman in charge would wear a black dress.
Together they have around 125 songs and just celebrated 10 years together.

Welcome, J-Swag. You are embarking on (along with many others - over 200 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (130+ songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: czcams.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/video.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Hate?, Shambles, Influencer, Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Bestie, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming
 or funky like Bubble
or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries
 or poppy like Start Over
or a bit jazzy like Wonderland
or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole
or cultural like the Band-Maiko series
or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts
or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits (AniMaid) like Sense, Glory and Unleash!!!!! (from their own Anime MV (series?)): czcams.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/video.html)
And many songs are represented with over 50 well produced music videos. czcams.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYUJI concerts:
ïź 2023 Yokohama 10th Year Anniversary Concert “Endless Story” czcams.com/video/Za1y-RRVd70/video.html

ïź Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.
And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
ïź Shot by Pat McKee from their 2023 US tour concert in Detroit: czcams.com/video/DgxU-MVjta0/video.html
ïź See the Maids 2023 Rockville Festival’s short-set perfection performance: czcams.com/video/vjZkNeoGmhc/video.html
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, live streams, CD, DVD/BD & merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Don’t Let Me Down, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.

    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “StarQueen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 30 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 32 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no
 KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 32 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 33 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 31 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it
every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin
 MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.

Fate brought these ladies together. No better way to explain it, but they were meant to be. I've seen them in the US and was in Japan for the Day of Maid show 3 weeks ago. Their talent is a beautiful thing. Japan has so much to offer in Rock, Metal, Prog and all women. Nemophila has harsh and clean vocals and musically shreds. Lovebites is more old school power Metal and host the greatest guitar duo on the planet. Hanabie has harsh and cleans, heavy AF with some techno mixed in. Truly jaw dropping. I'm a big babymetal fan as well and this has been the greatest rabbit hole I've ever encountered

This an excellent analogy! I am adding it to my comments when explaining to others about the outfits. I don't get why the outfits are an issue with anyone. AC/DC had the school boy outfit - KISS had the makeup - Alice Cooper and Ozzie had their thing too. Many more as well. BAND MAID doesn't mention the outfits (except in the Yokohama concert MIKU mentions the new design) it sets them apart from all the others - I wouldn't even call it a gimmick. MIKU calls it the GAP.

Try Thrill the track that blew them up on the world stage, after a slow start it suddenly went viral outside of Japan (the label was about drop them when this happened in 2015), Freedom, Onset, From now on, Without Holding Back, Hate? Are all great tracks and they have an extensive back catalogue (130 plus tracks all great servings).

Great rock band. As far as all female, Nemophila and Hanabie are on the metalcore side with both clean and unclean vocals where Maximum the Hormone likely had a big influence. Then there are also power metal bands with clean vocals like Lovebites. The idol stuff is usually exploitative mainstream pop and Baby Metal are not typical.

Exactly... Band-Maid is metal-capable (there's a video going around of them screwing around in the studio covering a Slipknot piece), but they'd rather take an occasional metal riff and put it under something like a pop chorus that makes for something better than if they'd just done one or the other. "How do you find a group of Japanese girls who can just shred..." Actually....Most of the popular Rock/Metal scene in Japan is dominated by girl bands or female fronted bands. Band-Maid is classified more as hard rock. However they do use elements from other genre's. Baby-Metal is a 1 of 1 unique situation, so trying to compare them to the rest of the Metal scene will not work very well. Majority of the J-Metal/Rock scene is traditional band layouts with 4-5 members all playing instruments. And in some cases you will find multiple vocalists as well.

Yeah, if one wants a group of all Japanese women playing more typical metal, there's:
      Hanabie
      Lovebites
      Bridear
Nemophila (super group of Japanese metal women)
      All of whom are outstanding.

Thanks for reacting to the greatest hard rock band in the world. I know a lot of the Maidiacs are going to get heated about the BabyMetal comparisons but it's normal to compare things to what we know. I do like BabyMetal but they're completely different. The Maids are their own genre and fuse many styles into their music. The pigeon-hole is very deep Po.

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. Poker shark and horse racing fanatic. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed. Definitely eccentric, possibly insane.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors. A sweet, motherly woman who turns into a beast when you hand her a guitar.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Completely unflappable. Frequently snacks between songs. Has been known to sign her banana peels and throw them to the audience.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. Regards her band mates, especially Kanami and Miku, with bemused exasperation. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

I am going to be a bit snarky here. First, take your comparison with Babymetal out of your mind. Babymetal is an IDOL metal band. The thre girls were HIRED by a management company and they use session musicians (all amazing highest caliber musicians). By the way, the Kami band members are friends with the members of Band-Maid.
Band-Maid was formed by Miku (Rhy g); they were formed organically. They write all their songs. They have complete control of their musical expression, unlike Babymetal.

Idol Group? No. ...and yes. The band's founder, Miku Kobato, was a refugee from a failed Idol trio. She had been paying the bills working at a Maid Cafe, and thought that a cute maid band that played hard rock might have some shock value and be memorable. She pitched the idea to Platinum Passport, a talent agency that was successful at promoting Idol Groups. They gave her the green light, told her to start recruiting a band, and they would advertise auditions for musicians. Miku scoured the internet looking for a cute girl who could play a mean lead guitar and found Kanami Tono, talked to her and got her to join. Kanami had been making demos with drummer Akane Hirose and she recruited Akane into the group. Akane's college schoolmate and buddy Misa, was bass player in a band that was breaking up and Akane convinced her to audition. When they started rehearsing Miku realized that her voice wasn't up to the power trio she had recruited and the auditioned for a lead vocalist, deciding on Saiki Atsumi, who had recently moved to Tokyo.
So, Akane was friends with both the bass and guitar players prior to joining Band-Maid, making the group both organic and put together. This was in 2013 and the first year was pretty rough: they almost got cancelled.

    NEMOPHILA
    EAST OF EDEN

    GACHARIC SPIN

When dinosaurs roamed the Earth there was a bunch of music called rock and roll. It branched out into all kinds of flavors. BandMaid can produce all the flavors at will. But overall this is rock and roll music. It is not heavy metal as you pointed out. Jethro Tull is not metal even though they beat out Metallica for the Heavy Metal Grammy in 1989. So confusion about rock, good ole rock and roll, being called metal is because most people alive have never seen a proper rock band in concert. You seem to be enjoying their music! FREEDOM live has a drum solo. Thanks for reacting!
Welcome to the BandMaid experience! The greatest proper rock and roll band of the 21st century. Here's some opinions and facts:
‱Bass solos are more likely to happen than not. There's a bass solo on their very first video!
‱Guitar solos are shorter, far shorter than you would like them to be
‱Unless you are superhuman, you will not/ can not be able to pick up everything they're doing to make that song great on the first listen.
‱Genre? Genres?? We don' need no stinkin" genre!
‱You like a hard rocking crazy fast tune? Well how about it done as a slower acoustic version? They do that.
    ‱April Fools Day 2019
As a joke they recorded a redo of Secret my Lips with traditional instruments and with lyrics in a Kyoto dialect. MV is stunningly beautiful.
‱The linchpin member of the band gets the least notice/praise. The Mighty Miku Kobato founder/lead singer fires herself as lead for a new more hard rock vocalist. Why? It makes the band better. They want her to hold a guitar so she does and learns to play on the fly, performing all the while she's learning. So the person who willed the band into existence, who is the primary lyricist, the only member who sings and plays an instrument most of the time gets the least comments from reactors. Oh yeah she has her own signature model guitar from Zematis (after playing less than 10 yr.
‱BandMaid has been together for over a decade with the same line up. Think about that.
‱More hooks, riffs and motifs in many songs than most bands have on an album. Check it out. No hyperbole.
‱Use of puns, wordplay using homophones between Japanese and English are not the exception. They are typical of Kobato's lyrics.
‱Despite the fact that their LIVE videos are superior to the official studio MV"s the latter are excellent. Funny, graphic, innovative and stunningly beautiful works of art describe what you get with BandMaid's official MV's.
‱As close to the Beatles in terms of unique persona of the members as any group since the Monkees. MISA is quiet and drinks. Akane is happy and eats, Miku is klutzy and CUTE, Kanami is an airhead who crushes on Saiki and Saiki was the Ice Queen. But the Ice Queen has thoroughly thawed. See Yokohama's Endless Story! Their image is carefully crafted or spontaneous or both.
‱Many songs have catch phrases or singalong sections to engage the audience. Many songs are in English and Japanese. Most songs are full of joy as well.
‱They're having a ball. They enjoy performing. They enjoy the fans. They enjoy each other.
‱Make no mistake, this is not a regular band.
