I beg you, if you haven't, please please watch "benjamin" by Simon Amstell. It avoids all of the stereotypes in this video, and very importantly, agrees with your statement. To be fair with Willow it was a culmination of both an addiction storyline and grief over Tara's death (which I feel was the catalyse of the Busy your gays trope) rather than her just outright turning evil for no reason, at first it was about avenging Tara's murder and then afterwards she fell off the wagon and became the Big Bad simply so she could block out the pain of that loss.
    Other than that I do agree with the majority of the list.

      Willow started said addiction that led to dark Willow with her very first spell, which was before she realized she liked girls. And when it came to Tara's death, Tara is the only character all fans would mourn and the writers knew it, so even it had nothing to do with the cliche.

      You put it the best so far. The entire time that was playing out, I couldn't stop thinking how that's the worst example for that.
      I also hate how people hate that Willow turned gay. I had a very serious crush in high school on a girl I met junior year. I'm 100% gay though. It's just something we sometimes go through when we are in denial or think that's the way to go. Willow very well may be a Lesbian who just thought she was supposed to be with a guy, so she went that route before meeting a girl who helped her discover her full truth.

    • @xAaeiynx
      @xAaeiynx Před 4 lety +13

      I don't think Willow is Gay. I think she's Bisexual because she still loves Xander. I think it's moronic to suggest that all Gay Characters are the Villains because they're not. There have been Straight Characters as Villains, too. Why can't a Gay Character be a Villain, too?

    • @samanthaash3944
      @samanthaash3944 Před 4 lety +3

      @@xAaeiynx Willow's love for Xander is purely platonic. She loves him deeply and that love saved her (and the rest of the earth) from herself but there was nothing romantic about it. Willow was his best friend. They tried dating and it didn't work but their love for one another endured that.
      I think when she was younger and had the 'crush' on Xander, it was the result of her loving him but not understanding that love for what it was. Even when she was with werewolf boy (whose name escape me) she cared deeply for him but it wasn't the real romantic love she didn't get to experience until Tara.
      Also Willow did eventually get her happy ending with her slayer girlfriend.

    • @xAaeiynx
      @xAaeiynx Před 4 lety +3

      @@samanthaash3944 Sorry, her sobbing in the bathroom, over Xander being with Cordelia and being immensely heartbroken, when she saw them kiss, in the library isn't a Plantonic love.
      I do think Xander professing his love to Willow is that of a romantic one, and even if they tried dating, some relationships just don't work out via Buffy and Riley, Xander and Cordelia, Willow and Oz. That doesn't mean they don't love each other.
      Even if not for Xander, Willow still loves Oz. I'm not discrediting Willow's bisexuality. As a bisexual, myself, it bothers me that any form of being into the same sex, romantically equals completely gay which is not true!
      And what also bothered me was Joss Whedon's reasoning for even having Willow being somewhat homosexual was that the cast were in College, and that girls "experiment" with their friends. So, that wasn't a good reason, for me, to turn Willow's character into somewhat of a homosexual. It's mocking it.

    Personally, as a straight person, I really learned and understood about the very negative cliches involving the LGBTQ+ community in all aspects of pop culture, such as books, films, plays, musicals, and television. It makes me feel angry that such cliches continue to be allowed for many decades and with almost no change by the people that have been behind it. I am hoping for better serious changes to happen in the future if there is to be a role for the LGBTQ+ community, through organizations like the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, to bring up such changes and influence Hollywood and beyond so that true progress can eventually succeed in the end.

    I have a thing to mention: that being Skam (the og and quite a bit of the remakes) really doesn’t stereotype any of these. You might argue that “oh but they dedicate a whole season to a gay guy who likes another guy and needs to come out to his friends and family” but the season isn’t just that, it’s so much more. Isak is such a complicated human character, he’s questioning his sexuality and kind of gets a bit obsessed with a guy he met. While he is also getting it on with a girl he thinks he likes, which eventually backfires as she proclaims he used her since he‘s gay and wasn’t attracted to her while she liked him. This guy he gets to know is peculiar but takes him on adventures that explore his personality and character more, not only that but Even (the guy he likes) is revealed to be Bipolar as the two had just gotten into a relationship and Isak doesn’t know how to deal, so he pushes Even away from him. Another side story that plays well into this is that his mother is a huge christian and is a bit wild and that’s why his dad left her. He is still in contact with both but lives with his friends. He comes out to both eventually and his mother takes it a lot better than he thinks. But back to the storyline with Even and Isak. Isak lives with an openly gay guy and after he realises that he’s gay he talks to him and Eskild (the gay roommate) is so happy he found out. Though Isak eventually goes on about how he’s not like Esklid by saying he’s not gonna be flamboyant with his sexuality and he’s not that kind of gay. This hits a trigger in Eskild and he explains to Isak rather angrily and annoyed that he does this and is like this because he’s proud of himself and finally is able to be someone part of the LGBT community without being beaten and arrested in today’s society. It’s really an emotional and amazing speech. Isak is flawed like any other character but his story isn’t just “he’s a closeted gay that finds a guy and falls in love and comes out”. His story is more complicated then that and that’s one of the main reasons I love Skam. Trust me, there are a lot more reasons to love Skam too, but Isak Valtersen is amazing.
    (HOLY SHIT I JUST SAW HOW MUCH I WROTE IF YOUR READING THIS RIGHT NOW CONGRATS)

      i think theres a line where Sisko says that in the 24th century theyd gone beyond the lgbt groupings we have today-thats why its not explicitly stated that Jadzia is bisexual. but in the mirror universe Ezri is gay as is Leeta Kira is bisexual- all women!. some peole say Garak is gay

    Oh man, I really needed to see this video. Thanks for making it and thanks to CZcams's algorythm to recommend it to me (although 6 months after upload, but ah well).
    This is great stuff to know when seen from a writer's perspective.
    And it keeps me wondering something slightly off-topic here;
    Should a character's sexual orientation only be added into the book when it directly influences the plot?
    And in what way should the characer's sexual orientation be important to the author in the first place if it indirectly influences the plot? - Aka; the sexual orientation influences plot-influencing decissions.

    Great list and it sickens me to the core that a lot of the media misrepresent this community. Thankfully there are some out there that does it right like Love, Simon which is one of my top favorite movies. I'm going to share it on Facebook in hopes more learn from these mistakes.

    As a gay man I can tell you Willow wasn’t a villain because she was gay, she was hurt and angry and high on magic. She would have done the same if it were say , Oz who was killed. Also it’s a fictional world where magic exists, so...

      I think it's because Trans characters pretty uncommon when it comes to entertainment media. once in a blue you may spot one but they pretty much the minority of this minority community. another reason, if my memory serves me correct aside from common characteristic of being slightly promiscuous, the majority of those characters are unique and don't feel stereotypes. aside from the aforementioned personality trait along them.

      Agreed. This was a good list, but since they mentioned that asexuals and bisexuals have little representation, I thought they'd mention how that representation is even smaller for trans and non-binary individuals.

    I agree with most of this but I think naming willow in naming baddies missed the point or deliberately avoids the context. Buffy dates horrible guys, willow ends up with her soul mate and lover and goes off the deep end at Tara's death. To interpret willow as a villain really misses the point. It was ahead of the time. She's the gay character who loses the love of her life and loses control. No other character in the show has such a love story, the show builds their connection before the become lovers. As a lgbtiq who grew up in the 90s-early 2000s their story was something that made me believe if I ever found a same sex partner my love would be as real as heterosexuals, as would the anguish of their loss.

    Tara is always used in the example of this trope, but Willow's SO was planned to die even before Willow was decided to be the gay character on the show in order for the out of control magic plotline to work. Originally it was going to be Xander who discovered his sexuality. As much as people hate Tara's death, in a show that doesn't have happy endings for ANYONE, I'd say Tara's death served a purpose in the story.

    When there's a character and his/er sexuality become the center of attention it's a big turn ff for me and I just stop watching
    I love it when we focus more on the CHARACTER and if he/she happen to be whataver then it's fine for me.
    I don't need a tweet saying that Dumbledore was gay or not. I love Dumbledore as a character not just becuase he is gay or something

    • @mrnocal
      @mrnocal Před 5 lety +4

      I'm gay and I agree. Sexual preference or whatever should just be incidental. Focus on the character. We don't need stereotypes thrown in our faces, but we do need alternative sexual preferences and such to be shown because it's a realistic part of life and humanity.

    Stan Smith disproves the "switch teams" cliche, when it comes to being gay. Before that, he (like most extremists in the world...and within the comment section) seem to believe that being gay is a choice.
    But you can't CHOOSE to be attracted to someone, it just...HAPPENS; sometimes, when you least expect it. That's basically, how love of any kind works

    As an Asexual, the fact that you included it made me happy because it’s so true. A lot of time we are described as broken, sociopaths, psychopathic and/or dark, that isn’t the case at all. Also a lot of us struggle with not being excepted by the LGBTQ+ community and community in general. We are literally at times, the invisible sexuality. (Not to say a lot of other sexualities face the same issue)

    This is why I hate when heterosexual individuals say “There’s already a gay character or stop spreading the gay agenda” like, half of my favorite characters are stereotypical or end up dying or cast to the side. I’ve had my many years of watching straight characters end up happy but what about the lgbt characters? I want my happy ending too, just because there’s one gay character doesn’t mean it represents all of us. Give us more lgbt storylines, there’s so many to tell.

    Another cliché: this is very recent, but there's been a cliche going around that LGBTQ characters are against straight white men and hostile towards them. I'm a straight white male and I've met a lot of nice lesbian people in real life and online. (Sorry if I did a bad job explaining this)

    The 40 Year Old Virgin has always bothered me because as an asexual person who is still a virgin in her 30s and completely content about it, I hate the social stigma that it's pathetic or abnormal to not have slept with someone by the time you graduate high school. Some of us just really don't care about or desire sex. At all. lol
