If you wrote him as a character in a movie people would find him unrealistic.
This is the exact perspective that moves me the most. His life was the literal definition of "Larger-than-life," and yet he was, somehow outside of the body of politics, the living embodiment of the frailty of the human condition, as much as he was our perseverance too.
Well done making this video gentlemen. Very human. Very honest. My favorite moment today.
Mine too.
him Dying ?
Normally, I could listen to Professor Merrifield and Professor Copeland go on and on endlessly. Though, listening to them expound upon their experiences with Professor Hawking and memorialize him and celebrate his life made this video truly extraordinary.
How inspiring human being he was! Never let his disability come his way of doing things or having the beer for that matter...
We all need to learn a lot from him.
Couldn't agree more. I used to wish I could live forever, or have a perfect life. But what I really wish for now is that I had been to a Hawking lecture. Rest in peace.
So much respect Brady for you having this video out today, this must have been a stressful day, but shows your dedication and love for not only the subject, but also for the people! RIP Stephen Hawking.
Absolutely agree, to get all the way to Nottingham, interview, cut and edit and release all in one day, very impressive. A great testament to a great man.
he makes me proud to be a tim!
Agreed. Thanks, Brady!
I agree. Much respect for Brady.
He probably made this video in advance, knowing that at some point he will die.
How did you manage to put together a great video like this in less than a day? You will never stop to amaze me, Brady.
I had a lot of help today - the professors were willing at short notice and Sean from Computerphile was able to film the interviews...
Glad you enjoyed it.
I actually remembered that you called for some help on Twitter today when I saw that clip from Newcastle.
Absolutely fantastic job there guys.
Pirat He's not Grey, that's for sure, haha

This feels so weird. It's like since he was around before me I expected him to be around after me. :(
Uhh...what? That doesn't make even a little sense.
I had the same feeling. It was like he was a staple of the world.
Broken Wave
Some things seem to be eternal.
Hawking was this way.
I think it's at least in part due to the computer voice he used. It was like he wasn't completely human in a way, and so he wasn't prone to living the time of a mere mortal.
If I wasn't an atheist, I'd say he worked on the problems of the gods. It's a sad day for science.
Max Warner 🔭
I see what you did there.👏
That doesn’t make any sense, he’d have to live far beyond humanly possible
His life was a triumph of man through adversity, he has been an inspiration to many others. Rest in peace Professor.
Let's not forget that Stephen Hawking was also the only person to ever play himself in all of Star Trek.
The universe will not be the same without him.
As fun as that little factoid is, I wouldn't exactly count it as one of his greatest achievements =D
Lord Enlosser he didn't actually play himself he played a hologram version of himself in a poker game with Sir Isaac Newton and Data
I appreciate your little gem in this procession of sentimental treasures! It captures how the sci-fi show to rule all sci-fi shows still wanted to include his true character as a mind of the ages.
RIP Stephen Hawking~True gift to this planet
He is now in black hole. Whether there are black flames, I don't know!
The day of Pi.
The day of Einstein's birth.
The day of Hawking's death.
A lot to think about and amazing achievements to remember and celebrate on March 14th.
It seems quite fitting that he was born on Galileo's death day and died on Einstein's birthday.
Eliza I had to check whether both dates were in the Gregorian calendar and it turns out that they are indeed.
please don't push the pi day meme, it's kind of not a thing for the english, it's 14/3 here, and, hawking was english
it's a bit trite to also add that as one of the interesting things, especially if it doesn't apply for him
Thales,
I thought it was quite _irrational_ for him to depart on Pi day, IMHO.
Wolfram Stahl A big day for maths
Rest in peace

Like Professor Merrifield said - the fact that Professor Hawking passed away is sad, but in 1963 he was told he had but two years to live. FIFTY FIVE YEARS LATER he passed away! And what a life he had!! We are all sad to see him go, of course, but we are blessed that he was able to live those fifty five years and give us the amazing things he did. Things that we are *still* working on - and will be working on for generations to come, no doubt! R.I.P. Professor Hawking!
The URL of this video almost spells out "Hawking" towards the end.

Great video on a very sad day. I've started reading A Brief History of Time to my 9 year old tonight. He wanted to, I didn't think he was serious but we made it through Carl Sagon's introduction and the first few pages of the first chapter before it became far too past bedtime! I had to stop and explain various bits and bobs but he wants me to carry on! What is great in those first few paragraphs is the idea of science being a cumulative exercise, how Ptolemy built upon Aristotle and Copernicus built further. My son said maybe he can build further when he's older. I had to hold back the tears.
that's really nice
Beautiful! Every child is born a genius scientist and explorer. If you can feed his motivation during school years (which repel many students from science, tech and maths), I'm sure he will build further
Amazing! The interest is there. Now you must ingrain the work ethic and willingness to fail
A lovely tribute video.
Every time I don`t see a black hole I will think of him.
Erik oh my that is tooo cute :3
Weak and of tiny wavelenght -> not visible.
We may see the first picture of the supermassive black hole in the middle of the milky-way soon thanks to the event horizon telescope. We'll all be thinking of Hawking when we see it.
Very relevant comment today :)
Nature made his body suffer a casually cruel, arbitrary and pointless death lasting decades. Implacable, undaunted, with such politeness and such flair, he made (and articulated) the vital connections between the infinitesimally small and the incomprehensible big. He gathered together the disparate, flailing strands of theoretical physics after the war, and gave the whole field a burst of creative energy. And that, in turn, gave us modernity. R.i.P.
I think you've said it better than anyone else here man.
Couldn't say it better..
Even though he could no longer fully experience the world around him, he was able to work to explain the world that to most, is completely incomprehensible.
Kudos to brady for getting this out so quick
Steven Hawking has around my whole life , he has done so many things and i thought of him as an idol . It's just weird thinking that he is gone
Thanks so much to all involved for making this.
'If you are looking for trouble, you've found it.'
Rip professor.
R.I.P. Stephen Hawking. You’ve always inspired me.
This was exactly what I needed. Thank you
You want a physicist to speak at your funeral. You want the physicist to talk to your grieving family about the conservation of energy, so they will understand that your energy has not died. You want the physicist to remind your sobbing mother about the first law of thermodynamics; that no energy gets created in the universe, and none is destroyed. You want your mother to know that all your energy, every vibration, every Btu of heat, every wave of every particle that was her beloved child remains with her in this world. You want the physicist to tell your weeping father that amid energies of the cosmos, you gave as good as you got.
And at one point you'd hope that the physicist would step down from the pulpit and walk to your brokenhearted spouse there in the pew and tell him that all the photons that ever bounced off your face, all the particles whose paths were interrupted by your smile, by the touch of your hair, hundreds of trillions of particles, have raced off like children, their ways forever changed by you. And as your widow rocks in the arms of a loving family, may the physicist let her know that all the photons that bounced from you were gathered in the particle detectors that are her eyes, that those photons created within her constellations of electromagnetically charged neurons whose energy will go on forever.
And the physicist will remind the congregation of how much of all our energy is given off as heat. There may be a few fanning themselves with their programs as he says it. And he will tell them that the warmth that flowed through you in life is still here, still part of all that we are, even as we who mourn continue the heat of our own lives.
And you'll want the physicist to explain to those who loved you that they need not have faith; indeed, they should not have faith. Let them know that they can measure, that scientists have measured precisely the conservation of energy and found it accurate, verifiable and consistent across space and time. You can hope your family will examine the evidence and satisfy themselves that the science is sound and that they'll be comforted to know your energy's still around. According to the law of the conservation of energy, not a bit of you is gone; you're just less orderly. Amen.
-Aaron Freeman.
A truly inspiring person. Stephen Hawking, may you rest in peace. You will be dearly, dearly missed.
Rest in peace Mr. Hawking. A great man and mind. Possibly no other person has brought physics into the modern public consciousness more than you. The result of which, will grow over future generations and change our planet for the better.
This was fantastic. Thank you for putting this together!
What a man, may he never be forgotten.
Beautifully done. Thank you for this.
This was a fantastic tribute video Brady. Really top notch, great work. I particularly enjoyed the beer anecdote, it really gave me a sense of the kind of person he was.
Wonderful video. It's so nice to hear some of the professors reflecting on such a great mind
Thank all of you for sharing this time!
I think the best story I read or heard about Stephen was from someone who went to an university math class with him, the prof had assigned 5 problems on a Friday to be completed for the Monday class at 11:00 AM, the student & a friend worked all weekend and only managed to complete 3 of them, they ran into Stephen Monday morning at 8:00 AM and asked how he did, Stephens reply "I haven't started yet", by start of class he had completed all 5...
Great job. Thank you for this.
Thank you very much! Wonderful video!
Thank you Brady, Sean, Ed, and Mike for making this.
Godspeed Star traveler!
What a lovely tribute. Thank you, Brady, Ed and Mike.
Touching memories. Thank you.
Fantastic video, thanks for this.
thanks for doing this Brady. it was a good 'summing up'
Each new video with Copeland makes me so happy
It's always a sad day when the world loses such a wonderful mind. Goodbye Mr. Hawking. You shaped my life and the lives of many others. You will be missed, my friend.
He wasn't your friend.
A lovely tribute. Thanks, Brady.
This is excellent journalism and science. Thanks to all involved. What a great work.
This is a wonderful video. Thanks for sharing your memories of Hawking!
thank you for watching
This is a really lovely video, thank you
Lovely Brady! This was a great tribute.
This was great, thank you Brady
Beautiful video mate. Cheers...
14/3/18. The day where everyone became shocked because the realisation hit them; Hawking wouldn't live forever in human form rather memories.
Great video. Thank you.
Thank you so much for making this video. RIP
Well done Brady et al - a very nice tribute.
Died on the same day when Albert Einstein was born.
And was born on the same day Galileo Galilei died (300 years after).
Don't forget Marx.
Had to pull over because I’m tearing up. What a beautiful experience.
Fantastic video Brady
Great video, thanks!
What a beautiful story. May he not be forgotten.
Lucky guy!!! Awesome friend to have. Sorry for your loss.
What a great video. Thanks.
I would love to hear more of these kind of stories!
- Rest in peace
He is immortal in our hearts, minds and of course in our textbooks and notebooks too.
Love you Stephen.
Very good video! Nice personal stories
Thank you for making this video eulogy of a great man with an even greater mind.
I've only just got round to watching this. Well done! It's a great tribute, both informative and human.
Wonderful stories, such as we're unllikely to hear elsewhere.
Good work - thank you. Stephen's greatness as a person and scientist really cannot be overstated.
So nice to hear Ed Copeland's memories of hanging with Hawking!
Very nice. Thank you!
Amazing! So thankful
ahhh good on ya brady. i've feel kinda low the last day or so. its nice to hear about him from these guys
very fine video. thanks for this
It's great to hear these views of Hawking - Great video. Thanks
A Brief History of Time and The Universe in a Nutshell convinced me to pursue my physics degree.
What a wholesome video, I really loved this one.
A friend of mine today told me sometimes we think of our loved ones somewhere, up there, in heaven, looking down on us. Well, Stephen Hawking is somewhere, up there, in the greatest supper massive Black Hole in the universe. I'd like to think that he's now finally on his way of solving the greatest mystery of all: quantum gravity.
He was born on Galeio's 300th anniversary of death and died on national Pi day and Albert Einstein's birthday. Makes me think the universe has a sense of humor and believes in some special magic.
Appropriate beer selection for the thumbnail, too. Soon as Prof. Copeland said "Newcastle," it came to mind.
That was a truly awesome video.
I was waiting for this response.
Stephen Hawking not only died while leaving an astounding history, both as a scientist, a person, and a disabled person but also marked his death by the Pi day!
I'd love to die during Pi day!
avi12 he died late last night , not pi day
Late last night in the US, but it was Pi day in the UK where he lived (and died)
I hope I pass away on February 30th
Of course, in the rational parts of the world, Pi Day is April 31st (31.4, shame about the decimal placement)
This is a lovely remembrance.
Beautiful tribute
Wonderful video.
Sad to hear, Great story we are blessed we had him for such a time we did
What a wholesome video, I absolutely loved this. RIP to this legend
Thank you
Thanks for sharing your memories with us. I'm truly grateful to have been alive at the same time as Professor Hawking.
I have so much respect to Ed Copeland and Merrifield, they boost up my love to science, especially to physics. And all this happen throughout difficult times in my personal life and when I was working in my final undergraduate thesis. So I regard both of you as my mentors some how in everything related to physics. Thanks so much to both of you.
How could anyone dislike this video?
Rest in space and time.
Rest in spacetime*
It's one word matey
I’ve looked up to Steven Hawking as a hero for quite some time now, and even though I haven’t met him, his death saddens me greatly. His memory and his work will forever live on. Rest In Peace. ❤️
Nicely done.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences about this extraordinary man.
This is the best tribute to the man I've seen. Such great memories of his character and genius. It brought me to tears.
very personal experiences of a great man. I loved this video
Thank you
Great video
What a remarkable, fantastic man. A true inspiration. Rest in peace.
Thank you.
Im so glad i watched this
Terrific video! It's great to hear these personal anecdotes to learn more about the man himself. :)
