Finding at least some consolation in the fact that nothing seems to be really new. The will to live in a world that has been cleansed of everything people see as hostile or feel uncomfortable with, the belief one could destroy thoughts or even history by destroying books or words or art and by that create a "new" and "better" reality - these things pervade past and present and ironically interconnect totalitarian thinking in whatever disguise it may enter the stage.
Call it an anthropological constant or Nietzsche's eternal recurrence, it makes it hard to read history as a story of progress.
