  • In this video I show you a limited slip conversion kit that fits many BMW models.
    This kit is a cost effective way to convert your open differential on your BMW to a progressive rate limited slip differential for only a fraction of what a fully assembled LSD would normally cost.
    Here is a link to demonstrate how this kit works:

    I'll be doing a follow up video showing the install process and a demonstration video.

More challenging things like upgrading the diff (meaning, changing the actual diff internals) I am only slightly comfortable doing that myself. 90-95% of the rest, I am slow but capable to most of the work. • @maxnix346
      @maxnix346 Před 5 lety

      Ring gear is welded on. If you go M3, you have to replace the whole subframe and brakes, suspension. Modification of the pilot shaft is also required. If you cannot afford to swap a pre-built differential in with a core refund (about $2.3K for the unit without core return), then seriously just skip it and keep your fluids fresh.

    Pretty disappointed to be constantly screwed over with my manual e82 135i. First it didn't come with a LSD from factory (what was BMW thinking??), then I've got a housing that can't be swapped for any factory fitted LSD's, then the bloody ring gear is welded to the centre. Turns out to be cheaper to just buy a converted diff with a LSD on a swap basis anyway. FML.

      I think my channel has a fair share of really budget oriented solutions which might not always be the best recommendation but for some people is relevant content. For instance one of the first videos that got this channel going is an injector DIY and I used rebuilt ebay injectors of all different indexes. Lasted a couple years but not necessarily the best move on a tuned car, eventually did a follow up video with index 12 injectors with an explanation as to why people should go that route. I'll definitely let you guys know if this LSD retrofit doesn't last or work.

      @@VehicularDIY Correct... Rear carrier, diff sub assembly, but might as well exchange the axles with the M3, also you'll need to adjust the driveshaft; the ends are different for the M3 and the length is different (esp for the E92 M3 to E90 sedan). Its doable but pretty involved job.

  • @maxnix346
    @maxnix346 Před 5 lety +1

    Wow, well first off, clutches are a wear item. So even if this operates as claimed, durability has to be highly suspect. That is a lot of labor having to remove and rebuild your differential for maintenance. Also, true clutch differentials have a lot more materials with multiple clutch and driven plates with much larger areas involved, thus more evenly distributing the thermal loads. Lastly, you are going to have to throw away your differential if this fails as it will be too destroyed to rebuild.
    The optional mechanical differential offered over the last two years as a port installed option on F3X and F2x BMW is a Drexler multiplate clutch design.
    I would say that this "LSD" clutch design is rather like DCI intakes in that if such a less expensive arrangement worked as advertised, the OEM would have put them into production to save money and reap the performance benefits. That they have not should raise a very large red flag for anyone contemplating that he is a better engineer than ones OEM is hiring.
    If nothing else, I would have a completely ready spare differential ready to swap when this one fails. The automatics produced before 9/07 used the larger casing like the MT and DCT differentials but still had the bolt on ring gear. For anyone that has a 6MT or DCT differential with the welded gear ring, it is not a trivial job to remove for even most experienced machine shops. I would therefore recommend looking at reliable suppliers like Trac, MFactory, DiffsOnline or VAC motor sports who have the necessary experience.
    I would really reconsider this if you are hauling your family around 610 and have your differential seize at 80 mph. All risk and limited benefit in my estimation. Would hate to lose you that way. Also, no matter what happened, you would be instantly 100% liable for any damages that were self inflicted or occurred to others. Insurance would most likely decline coverage.
