    Kero Kero Bonito make their Polyvinyl debut with a pretty radical departure from the signature sound cemented on Bonito Generation. Thankfully, Time 'n' Place is every bit as good as that album.

    KKB is a seriously underrated band. Just so we all know here, this album came hot off of some weird things in the band members' lives, like Sarah having recurring messages and images in her dreams and getting sent a picture of a barren wasteland where her childhood home was by her brother. Gus and Jamie experienced similar things but also had deaths and losses added in. The album was meant to reflect their position in life.

    I love Dump tho. I think KKB wouldn't have wanted the track to build, it's meant to be tranquil and liberating while still sad, as Sarah is basically talking about getting rid of her dead parrot's cage and stuff like that. I really like the risk they took with this track, just not going towards the noisy/cheerful breakdown they did almost all the way through Bonito Generation and the rest of the very same Time'n'Place. I think it really says a lot about KKB getting adult and coming to terms with things and trying to maintain innocence and all the good things while they eventually get to be discarded and dropped off in a dump.

    Bonito Generation is an album about being a hopeful child marching on to adulthood, and Time 'n' Place is the follow-up to that. With Time 'n' Place, Kero Kero Bonito realizes the truth in adolescence and develop some mental disorders in the process, for when one goes through such optimism in the real world, you suffer for it in the end.
    to me Bonito Generation is a 10/10 and Time 'n' Place a 9/10
    Tran

    • @Number9Robotic
      @Number9Robotic Před 5 lety +117

      While I agree with your thoughts on Bonito Generation, I don't think Time n Place is exactly a case of "developing mental disorders" because of what they had realized; KKB already had an early period of questioning mature subject matters in their Intro Bonito mixtape, where a bunch of songs like "Pocket Crocodile", "Let's Go to the Forest", "I'd Rather Sleep", "Small Town", and even "Sick Beat" addressed issues of existentialism, prejudice, depression, and death.
      Bonito Generation is basically a response to that half-cheery, half-dreary mindset, basically saying "The future will be strange and busy, but it doesn't have to be sad; we can still go in it with a smile, so let's do that!"
      Time n Place, in turn (at least to me) is itself a reaction to Generation, and sort of a revisit to the existential and nervous themes of Intro, with the key difference being that rather than having the anxious, scary future approaching soon, *that future is now*. tbh, I don't see Time n Place as being like contemptuous of optimism or thinking observing the world with childhood innocence is stupid, as elements of it still are in the album; it's just that the mature, stressful, scary adulthood that they've grown up into is here, and it must be lived with. KKB still has elements of sincere optimism in a lot of places here, and they're not saying adulthood has to be stressful and scary, it just simply IS.
      Time n Place is about how the world of adulthood can be simultaneously sad, cheerful, melancholy, optimistic, pessimistic, bittersweet, whatever. It doesn't have to be exclusively one or the other.

    • @homonculi
      @homonculi Před 5 lety +20

      @@Number9Robotic what I meant by my thoughts on Time 'n' Place wasn't just about developing mental disorders. In a very simple sense, Time 'n' Place feels like "a slap in the face" for the childlike optimism from Bonito Generation. In tracks like Big City and Trampoline, KKB's message was that of being an adult will be great because the protagonist is a star with big dreams, and Time 'n' Place shows that dreams are too exaggerated and distant from reality, and the band's protag is now grounded to that reality. There's a definite hint of hopelessness, but the optimism was still intact. The track Make Believe is to me, the protagonist sings to herself to keep being an optimist, even if reality is pretty overbearing. Tracks like Visiting Hours and Sometimes shows the development of depression one would get from dreaming too high only to fall so far, and you feel the emotions in songs. In the simplest of terms, Bonito Generation is the soundtrack to a person who just graduated and is now tackling adulthood and Time 'n' Place is the future of said person, who has now realized adulting is hard.

    Anthony, if you're having a bad day please know that there are people all around the world who may be having a shitty time as well and by introducing them us to new music you are helping us get through it. For example, I have a broken as fuck leg right now and I can't do shit except for listen to music. You've been my biggest support without even realising. Thank you and love from Australia.

    It’s funny usually my favorite songs are his least favorite. I love “dump” so much. It feels so “nostalgic”. The weird background bass reminds me of a game boy advance. If you listen to the “SpongeBob movie the game OST” on GBA. It just gives me that type of fun grainy nostalgia. I dunno I love that song.

    I'm a big KKB fan, but honestly as I listened to this album I just found myself constantly wanting to relisten to Bonito Generation instead of Time 'n' Place. That being said I still love the new album! I just miss how unique and bubbly the old style was.

    I thought the last album was a "gimmick" even though it was a good one, and this would be a disaster. Instead they actually did something amazing and I will never doubt their decisions again.

  • @alexandersebastianschulz2878

    Did not enjoy this album nearly as much as Bonito Generation (to be fair that album is a 10/10 to me). It's good, and I'm glad they took the risk instead of resting on their laurels, but BG was a zeitgeist album with a certain spark and feeling that I don't think they could ever capture again.

  • @tonym1012
    @tonym1012 Před 5 lety +2

    I'm still on the fence about this album. I love Bonito Generation, and their tracks that pre-date it, but this album is a serious departure from their sound. Yes, I love the lyrics, and the musicianship is impeccable, but maybe I just haven't spent enough time with it. I'll see them in concert, and listen to the album again, but thanks for the review. It reminds me that artistic direction should be taken at face value, and this is who KKB is now. I'm OK with that, even if I need to sit with it for a bit :)

    Great review melon, but I found the last 5 minutes of video where you were saying you were going to make her your wife whether she likes it or not over and over again rather unsettling.
