Optimus for me seemed very Transformers fan focused, while Bumblebee was more LEGO influenced. As for the minicons....cool idea but I think it will be tough to pull off at that scale using actual LEGO pieces.

As a half Lego half transforms fan, I feel like the two ideas only merge so much. Optimus worked because of his realistic size as a European truck, but bumblebee completely messes that up because of the limitations of Lego pieces and budgets compared to his small size and somehow even smaller alt mode. I think they did the best they could without making the two look like minifigs, like kre-o did, though some of those figures could still transform while at minfig scale, I still have the transforming cliff jumper

Unfortunately, stability is tantamount. Lego's biggest fear is a kid dropping a toy, pieces flying everywhere, kids crying, parents annoyed and never buying lego again. So they limit articulation to ensure that 9/10 times when a kid sets a figure down, it just stands up on its own. >shrugs

Eh, that is a fair argument. But i would give the figure brownie points if it had knees, like the ones on the titan cole mech from earlier this year, where it had pistons so the bend at the knee would be more frictiony. But bumblebee must transform so out the window with that!

but custom builders dont have to adhere to the strict stability and ease of build rules and budget restrictions that lego designers have to deal for their sets, of course custom builds are better, cus they can use any techniques the builder wants, no matter how illegal or complex or fragile, can use as many parts as the builder wants, its the same argument as comparing third party transformers to official hasbro ones, theyre operating on completely different sets of parameters to the point where the comparison is just not fair in the slightest

  • @coffeeinhandproductions3238

Considering Bee's not entirely small, and hugely out of scale with Prime, and is about 900 pieces the 120 doesn't feel half bad. Prime is about $240 with a piece count of about 1500 which isn't exactly great. Definitely planning to get both at some point this year as they look great together. Would have been nice to see ankle tilt on the Bee though. Really wanted the Voltron but before I could it was unjustly retired.

I'd love a, maybe new theme?, of Lego Transformers that are abt $50-$100 each (average). They won't be replacing Generations or any nonsense you (someone; not you, specifically) may come up with. They just would prioritize articulation and proportions _more_ than (Icons) Bumblebee and Optimus. They could even create new pieces to improve stability for different joints, etc, as well as (create new pieces to) help with certain design elements of the characters.
Y'know Lego's already obsessed with the Buildable Figures, right? So, why not do this? It'd be really cool!

I think overall, Lego Bumblebee is really, really quite good. The carmode is quite well-done considering the lack of VW licence, it just looks really good, too. The botmode is really good. I like the different building techniques to capture different aspects of the design. I like the face. The gun is good. And, I really like the bumper details. The Goldbug and Bumblebee bumper stickers, "I ❤ Cybertron", etc are very good and cute details! And, all that for $90 (USD)! Thats a pretty good deal.
Yea, I know, he could've and should've have knees. They should've found a stable way to do so. But, its fine. Not a huge deal. And, yea, his shoulders are a little too big, but thats completely fine, too. And, the partsforming, too, but I don't give a scrap; its no big deal. And, yes, the proportions aren't the best, but who really cares? Its still a good Lego Bumblebee! Its not like its trying to be like Generations (SS, LGY, etc)!
Also, if you ask me, Soundwave is a no-brainer for the next one. His transformation and design are simple enough, hes an extremely popular character (for good reason), and he could be done very easily at $90 (USD) for base, and a little more for (at least, a couple of) his Minicons. Totaling up to probably, say, $110 (USD) or so? Also, hes a Decepticon, while both our current ones are Autobots.

LEGO Bee is an interesting companion piece to Optimus because I think Bee does a couple of things better than Optimus, mainly the stability and the general look. Optimus looked nice, but I think Bee looks a little more refined. However, Optimus does feel much more complete as an overall package due to his accessories and him being more poseable. Optimus' transformation is also a little better than Bee's because it doesn't have partsform technically, and is a little more straight forward and more intuitive because Bee felt a little flimsy in that aspect.
As a LEGO fan, I think Bumblebee's pretty good, and while it's still expensive, he's an easier sell compared to how expensive Optimus is. I don't know if I'd say Bee is better than Optimus, but I like both.

As a 40-ish year old fan of both Transformers and Lego, these sets are pretty much aimed specifically at me as a target audience. And I like the Optimus; I have this Bee waiting for me when I get home from vacation. I like how these vehicles kind of remind me of really *old* lego sets, like from the 80s. The side windows on this and the windshield definitely give me vibes of older large Lego vehicles and sets. Optimus also used mostly classic bricks that have been around forever - some new one, but I still enjoyed the feeling of "yeah, I could have actually built like *most* of this back in the day*.

The difference in experience of the two designers is an interesting note. Hearing the different backgrounds of the designers, you can really start to see it in the builds. I'm personally more on the Lego side of things so I find it interesting more than anything. A side note about the Bumblebee designer and the whole model vs action figure thing, I saw an interview with the designer on a different channel and he was asked if the build was play tested with children (like literally PLAY tested) and he sort of sidestepped by saying it was tested with a variety of people and pointed out it was an 18+ set. Soooo yeah definitely more of a model than anything. Even as a Lego person and only the most casually aware of Transformers toy expectations I feel like they should have incorporated at least a little play into it. Yeah, I know the transformation is in and of itself a play feature, but idk. I feel like this one especially could have been more fun. I'm always interested to hear how Transformers fans feel about these sets.

I feel like if they were to do another, Megatron would be next. Then Soundwave, Shockwave, and/or Starscream. I hate the legs on Bee but I hate the legs on G1 Bee too so not gonna punish the set for that. Wish it was a bit more poseable but Bee doesn't really have any iconic or recognizable poses like Prime. I'd say pice is maybe $15-25 too much but I might get it anyway

I had the Lego Voltron set and even though it IS super cool, it was also quiet boring to build because the animal bots are too similar. But assembling and disambling Voltron itself was quite cool. I still think it could have been done better though. Making movable and posable legs aren't THAT difficult but I guess Lego whines about this and that and "it must be sturdy, it mustn't fall over and injure kids, yadda-yadda-yadda".

I was really excited to pick this up, but then I saw the Optimus Prime one, and I just think this one looks so bland in comparison now. I think that's just how the design of the character was for what they're referencing, but Optimus Prime is so much more eye-catching and interesting to look at. A lot more detail.
I feel really bad, because I LOVE Bumblebee. But I feel like if I'm going to spend money on a Transformers LEGO, I will do it on the more detailed and bigger Optimus Prime.

Not content with simply taking the faces of his enemies, Optimus Prime has begun taking the faces of the very Autobots he leads into battle! Will anyone be able to stop the rampage of this rabid renegade? Or will he leave the battlefield riddled with faceless husks?
Find out next time, on Dragon-Ba... Wait, whoops, wrong franchise.
