    For those interested, The BBC have released a documentary about the Inga Hauser case as part of their "Murder in the Badlands" series, looking at 4 unsolved murders in Norfhern Ireland, across 4 different decades. It's currently available on BBC iplayer.

    I always thought these original reconstructions were so creepy (and well done). All these "don't have nightmares" episodes were the best. Not that unmentionable mess with Jeremy Vine (what were they thinking?). I remember the late 90s ones when I was a kid being good too.. it really only fell apart a few years back.
    I used to record them from about 2004 onwards, but didn't think to keep an archive, so thank goodness for diligent people like you!

      Yes, they couldn't have chose a worse person than Jeremy Vine to present Crimewatch. He's fine on such programmes such as eggheads etc, but looked awkward on Crimewatch.
      I think from about 2006 onwards, Crimewatch wasn't really the same anymore, and even a few years before that it was nothing like the Crimewatch of old from the 1980s to the mid 1990s.

      They made it too gimmicky. Getting rid of Nick was a huge error, him & Kirsty Young would have made a good team. They made it too young & hip-bringing in so many mainstream/young/pretty faces who had no real interest in the show & were sports presenters or current affairs presenters. That final revamp from outside locations was just horrendous & the woman they chose was hopeless. I am amazed that ITV, C4, or C5 haven't picked up the show.

    • @spike197047
      @spike197047 Před 6 lety +4

      It wouldn't feel the same on any of those channels though..and imagine having to sit through all those ads.
      Love unsolved mysteries too, and was lucky enough to download many of the episodes that was put on CZcams a few weeks back. Still, I have to say even though it's a close call between Crimewatch and Unsolved Mysteries, I would favour Crimewatch UK.

      @@spike197047 That disaster with Jeremy turned it into Watchdog or something. I think it was still alright into the 2000s... think it started to lose its way around the time they got rid of Rav Wilding on CCTV. I don't understand why Crimewatch File isn't still used (especially considering interest in true crime in media and podcasts now). BBC seems to be missing a trick.

    The Inga Hauser case is still incredibly controversial to this day. It was reported in the Irish Times that "the IRA carried out its own investigation into the killing 30 years ago. It is believed republican paramilitaries had considered passing information about the alleged murderer to the RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary) at the height of the Troubles, but did not follow through." As with the Loyalist paramilitaries, there were also a number of sex offending crimes linked to the IRA during that period.

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@margaretbanks8969the motive seems to have been sexual and as I remember, the suspects may have been responsible for other similar crimes. It basically seems that a violent sex offender happened to also be a member of the IRA. What appears to have happened is that he was some kind of lorry driver and happened to be on the same ferry as her. He offered her a lift and then murdered her.

      Northern Ireland is a funny place. So many murders remain unsolved. Parts of northern Ireland (the rural parts especially) are best described as being akin to something from deliverance / the wickerman.
      *Very close knit.* They cover for one another or turn a blind eye. The man and woman thing + hitchhiker story sounds like a red herring. Her rucksack not being visible to other passengers who observed her walking through the lounge or in deck suggests she had likely already fallen into the clutches of her killer They'd probably holed it away in their boot offering her lift somewhere - Inga not realising untill it was too late .
      Likelier she was, kept somewhere by those behind the crimes. The fact no one in either Northern Ireland or the republic encountered her (a sociable and good natured Person who took delight in getting to know others and chatting) suggests she was abducted on the ferry and holed away in the boot or somewhere on the ferry
      As someone who lived in NI for a few years in the mid 2000s. I always advise people visiting to be on their guard. Most people are normal there but it's important to remember their recent history and the mentality that created within a quotient of them
      The most charming and "helpful" there were often the most dangerous God bless you Inga

    They suspect Inga was murdered on the ferry. Her body placed somewhere refrigerated to slow down decomposition to skew the forensics of the time. Her remains removed from refrigeration and dumped in the forest shorty before discovery.
    The sightings of a hitchhiker were false. Apparently. She never left the ferry alive.
    She was murdered on the ferry sometime before passengers were due to disembark after fending off a vicious attempted sexual attack from a stranger.
    They should look into refrigerated freights or lorrys with Cold storage compartments / passengers with access to commercial cold storage or ferry worker who could've concealed her remains on the vessel.
    A nightmare for her family. Her killer remains at large. They've never faced justice. Her parents have both since passed away. Beware of an outwardly friendly and smiling Irish man offering lifts....

      Hi: an article on the Joan Macan case arrest appeared in "The Herald" (a Scottish newspaper) on 28th July 1994, but, as you say, there's no allusion to a conviction. It read as follows:
      "MAN IN COURT ON MURDER CHARGE.
      A man appeared before Hemel Hempstead magistrates accused of murdering war heroine Joan Macan six years ago.
      Mr John Parker, 47, of Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, was remanded in custody for a week. Mrs Macan, a widow, was found battered to death on the garden path at her cottage in Ashridge, near Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, on her 81st birthday in May 1988.
      She was a former French resistance worker who received citations for rescuing Allied airmen. She was also a dog breeder and Crufts judge."
      Puzzlingly, this next newspaper extract I found on the 'net appeared in "The Times" during 1988 and includes a familiar surname. The on-line edition didn't give the exact date, but going by the sports results that appeared, I calculate it to have been published on Monday 12th December.
      "Mary Anne Parker, aged 21, of no fixed address, was
      remanded in custody until Friday when she appeared before
      Hemel Hempstead magistrates on Saturday, charged with
      the murder of Mrs Joan Macon, a dog breeder. Mrs Macan
      died on her eighty-first birthday on May 6 at her secluded
      country cottage at Ashridge Park, near Tring in Hertford¬
      shire. She had been hit on the head with a sharp weapon."
      Incidentally, I found the following two entries on forum threads dedicated to Labradors:
      "The dog I’m looking at here is Willowyck Lyn. Lyn was sired by Searchins Beaver, who was sired by Styleside Searchin who was sired by a show dog, Secret Song of Lawnwood. Incidentally, Secret Song was sired by Timspring Sirius. Sirius was bred by the late Joan Macan who at the age of 81 was murdered in her garden! Her body was discovered the following day. To my knowledge no one was ever brought to justice for this terrible crime!"
      "There used to be a lady who bred Labradors called Joan Macan. She was subsequently murdered under strange very circumstances, but that's another story."

      A very different world back then-people would just travel with limited money & no way to get more easily & pretty much just drifted around with no rhyme or reason & thought nothing of hitchhiking despite the dangers. Apparently the IRA even conducted an investigation on this case. You can see how she would have fallen prey to a killer-getting lifts off random people, likely not having enough money to stay anywhere or even buy food if her diaries are accurate-did she turn to begging or even prostitution? Nowadays her family & friends could have sent her money via PayPal or whatever instantly, back then she would have had to wait for snail mail from Germany to cash a cheque or postal order which would have taken at least a week & possibly 2-3 weeks to arrive-if she had an address to send it to, which it seems she didn't.

    I’m in two minds about the efficacy of Crimewatch. It seems to fail miserably at its intended purpose of helping police to solve crimes. I haven’t been counting, but 1988 seems to have been a terrible year for unsolved murders. Both murders in this episode were not solved, at least in 2022 when I’m writing this. As a tool for 1980s historians to call out the police on their hopeless incompetence and gross corruption, however, it’s perfect. In the case of Lynette White, featured a couple of episodes ago, the CW reconstruction clearly showed a white male with a bleeding hand outside the flat where she was murdered. So the police arrest and force confessions from 5 black guys. Three of whom are found guilty and do time in jail before the whole case was declared unsafe. They eventually found the real culprit, who was given a lesser minimum sentence than the original three who didn’t do it. Go figure. So yes, Crimewatch. Compelling viewing, and helpful for recovering Lady Muck’s stolen teapots, but how useful for genuine crime is debatable. There’s no doubt though, the person posting these onto YT is doing a great service to society.

    • @treasurehunteruk9718
      @treasurehunteruk9718 Před rokem +2

      They occasionally used to give figures of how many crimes were solved over the years, and it was quite high. There can't be anything wrong with asking the public for help, which is what the whole programme was about - the crimes featured were the most difficult to solve, hence most from the 80s and 90s are still unsolved. Karen Price's murder might not have been solved if they had not shown a reconstruction of her face on Crimewatch. Even if one rapist or murder is caught it is worth it - it wasn't about audience figures or popularity.

      It did help solve some crimes, unquestionably. But criminal investigations were severely limited back then because the technology was pretty primitive.
