My whole childhood, my Aunt (who had a unique sense of humor) would always say "Lets do it for Johnny man!". I must have heard this phrase about 10,000 times growing up. Then the day came where we watched The Outsiders in school, and I'm just innocently sitting there enjoying the movie. We get to the part where Matt Dillon says it, and it all came to me at once. Oh my god, it's from THIS! I wanted to tell everyone in class how amazing this moment was, shout it from the rooftops, but I realized no one would understand. I had to keep it to myself, I mean, how would I even begin to explain? It was one of the most bizarre and amazing moments of my life - sitting there in profound, silent catharsis. I have no mouth and I must scream.
Then, about a decade later, I find out all my young cousins experienced the same exact thing. Brings me a joy not easy to find. Great reaction, amazing movie.
That kind of feeling comes once in a lifetime, if you're lucky. That's the magic of films, they imprint themselves in our lives.

Fun fact. Pony wasnt supposed to get taken right out in the rumble. He had a whole choreographed fight. Stuntman slipped in the mud and accifently clocked him for real and they left it that way.

This was a slumber party staple in the 80’s. We would rent it, watch it, drool over the actors and then all cry. I’m blessed to still be close to some of them still. Thanks for the memories ❤.
It was the main entertainment at my private school's 8th-grade graduation party in 1984. A morality play to send us off to academy.
This is the only book I can remember being required to read in high school that everyone actually read. It was THAT good! We had the best time discussing it!

Ponyboy looked directly at the camera thinking they’d cut but they all just rolled with it and continued the scene.
This movie has a special place in my heart, one of my best friends growing up and I bonded over it. One of the last times I saw her before we started growing apart, she left a note on my car saying “Stay Golden Ponyboy”

Authentic Battle Damage Fact: In the rumble scene, the first punch is given to Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell). Howell recalls that the hit was real and it knocked him out cold on-set.
Breaking Character Fact: When Dallas (Matt Dillon) falls out of his chair at the drive-in, it was completely accidental, and Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell) looks briefly at the camera while laughing.
Casting Notes Fact: After C. Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Darren Dalton and William Smith filmed this movie, the same group teamed up again the next year with Estevez's brother Charlie Sheen in Red Dawn (1984).
Poster Shenanigans Fact: In the poster for the film, the Greasers are shown laughing as Johnny is smirking. This was a candid shot, taken during the photo session in which the actors were supposed to look tough at the camera. What happened was that Ralph Macchio quipped "Hey, Leif, that's for the talent." when Leif Garrett went to the table. This comment cracked up the cast and the photo was used.
Historical Fact: In the scene where Dallas (Matt Dillon) argues with a nurse in the hospital about the whereabouts of his hospital gown, the nurse is played by S.E. Hinton. Hinton began writing the novel that the film is based on when she was only fifteen years old, finished it when she was sixteen, and the book was published when she was seventeen. During filming, Rob Lowe asked S.E. Hinton what happened to Sodapop Curtis. Hinton responded that Sodapop was drafted to Vietnam and died there. The Outsiders House Museum opened in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on August 9th, 2019.
I still say Stay Golden Ponyboy and the young workers look at me like I'm nuts. Also toss out a do it for Johnny from time to time.

I went to the museum a couple of years ago. It looks just like it did in the movie, with the addition of display cases for memorabilia. There's even a beer bottle and chocolate cake on the living room table.
This and Stand By Me are two of my absolute favorites. Both are films I can re-watch over and over again.
This film has a truly stacked cast (even though most were unknowns at the time) and being directed by Francis Ford Coppola makes it that much better.

100 percent agree about this and Stand by Me. I'd never even heard of this movie until last year and I'm kicking myself for that.
I'd throw the Sandlot and Holes in there. But I absolutely agree, otherwise.

They weren't unknowns. They just weren't necessarily at the height of their careers.
Except for Lief Garrett & Diane Lane, I knew who everyone of the main cast was, when I first saw the Trailer for it. That's what got me so excited to watch it. I knew in passing that Lief Garrett was a singer, but had never been exposed to him as an actor or artist. As far as I know, this was Diane Lane's first role. It was the first thing I ever saw her in anyway.

4:32 Matt Dillon falling over in the chair wasn't apart of the scene, it happened by accident. C. Thomas Howell laughing was genuine. You can see he's looking over at the director to see if they were going to cut, but they keep rolling.

Yup.
Grew up in a small town. We had the preps/jocks vs. the burnouts fights at the park, lol. I was with the burnouts, and we always won. It doesn't happen anymore, but since the 70s, it was a thing up until the early 2000s in my town. It was so stupid, but it was a rush and it was what it was.
Same here born and raised in South Texas. 90% Hispanic, we had the rich and the poor and by rich I mean both parents worked. It was like that in my 80’s and 90’s. Fights against the 2 groups almost every weekend.
I watched a wonderful play of this back when I was in junior high. It was performed by college kids. I bawled my eyes out during the scene with Johnny's letter. They faded out on Pony and had Johnny sitting on top of a ladder soft lit in blue speaking the letter. It was beautifully done.

I wish SOMEBODY would react to Taps! Such a good movie with a great cast.

@@user-iz1re1ew1l I actually just recently saw "Distant Thunder" (in the last few years). Macchio and John Lithgow. . Macchio never really got props for his chops... Also if you can find "The Three Wishes of Billy Greer" a TV drama he did around the time of Karate Kid as well.

26:30 - While I didn't grow up in "that time period", the "Rumble rules" are what you said, basically. They also applied for "group fights" into the 1970s. No weapons, and if someone quits, they're out of the fight. But, if someone violates the rules (uses a weapon, or jumps back in after quitting) then all bets are off. That's when shit goes south, REAL fast. But since (back then) no one wanted to go up on a murder charge.... they all stuck to the rules. Things are different now.... a murder charge is seen as a badge of honour, and that's a major part of the problem.

I was 10 when watched this movie with my three cousins (all girls) and we all cried like babies, it became my eldest cousins favorite movie and she had all the actors up on her wall for years and we'd all watch the movie again when we all visited my grandmothers. When she passed fifteen years ago well before her time (she was 37) we cried again when they played 'Stay Gold' at her funeral. I guess it's difficult to "stay gold" when things like that happen. Anyway, I always thought Ralph Macchio is a hugely underrated actor, maybe one of the best of that group of "brat pack" actors, his performances are always subtle and understated so he kinda gets forgotten about, he was perfect for the Karate Kid, actually killed that part. I agree. I think it was because of his looks. He’s cute as hell, but he always looked like he was 15 years old. Even in Cobra Kai he still looks like a kid. I guess that cut down on the amount of roles he could get.
It has been so long since I'd watched this movie, you can add it to the short list of movies that make me cry. It's amazing how this movie launched so many careers. Francis Ford Coppola had already directed The Godfather parts I & II and Apocalypse Now by the time he made this movie, and he had one of the greatest Casting Directors ever working on this movie in Janet Hirshenson. The woman just knows how to identify talent. When you look at her career, the movies she did the casting for is ridiculous. Funny enough, this movie pretty much launched her career as well.

When I was a teenager my English teacher had us pick a book & write an & present it to the class. I chose The Outsiders & the poem Stay Golden by Robert Frost. It's been over 35yrs & I can still recite that poem word for word.
I remember watching The Outsiders at a slumber party when i was 10 years old. We all loved it so much, we watched it on repeat late into the night. By the way, i love how your puppy checks on you to make sure you are alright. So cute.

This movie is bonkers good. The funniest part of the book my wife pointed out is that it’s written by a woman who thinks hardcore kids wake up, drink a beer, and make A FULL CHOCOLATE CAKE for BREAKFAST.

Hardcore? They're poor white trash from Tulsa Oklahoma.. got to see Macchio and the author I think last year during his book tour.. love that so many of the actors are still very close to the author.

The book and the movie messed me up good when I first read it in school. Johnny's letter at the end is especially tragic. He wanted Dally to keep living and to see the good in the world after he was gone, but Dally was too broken by his death to keep going...
This movie is one of the Greatest ever. When i was a little kid i watched this every chance i could. If you don't at least tear up or cry when Johnny dies, then you aren't human, and Dallas broke down and couldn't handle his sadness. Ponyboy & Johnny were best buddies and back each other, and Dallas loved them both and always had their backs.
My junior high school shows up in the background in this movie.
And I’ve been to that drive in theater more times than I can count.

She wrote it when she was just 16 years old (in 1965) and still in high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where this movie was filmed. It was based on two rival gangs at her school, Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, who were also really named the Greasers and the Socs. Since the book was first published in 1967, it has sold more than 14 million copies, and still sells approximately 500,000 copies per year.

Growing up Gay in the 80's in a tiny racist town I had the same experience. There was the "Good Kids" and the "Trash". With all the various versions of violence to go with it.

This is my favorite book and probably my favorite movie. I've watched it at least 100 times and cry every time. This movie was filmed in Oklahoma; predominantly the Tulsa area where I'm from. My grandma's house was right next door to Jonny's house and down the street from Ponyboy's. My elementary school class got to go watch them film in Owasso where Pony and Randy talk in the Mustang. You can her us kids in the background. I've played in the park where that boy got stabbed many times. I also have MANY memories going going to that drive in the Admiral Twin. We're going there tomorrow night to see Godzilla X. So not only did I love the book, but the film became very personal to me. Thank you so much for reacting to it! My mom grew up in Oklahoma during the same time period this takes place in so she showed me the movie first. Then we had to read the book in middle school. Still one of my favorites. 💛
S.E. Hinton was 15 when she started the book, 16 when she wrote most of it and 18 when it was published.
She plays a nurse in this movie. and would have been around 35 when the movie came out.
As good as the movie is, I highly urge you to give the book a try. I read it in an afternoon 40 years ago and can still remember it well.

Not only was it a female who wrote the book. She was also 15 when she started writing it. 16 years old when she completed it. And 18 when it was published, to become a classic piece of literature that is still being taught in high schools all across the country. Amazing!! 🤯❤️

When I saw this on the list for this week, my first thought was...I don't know if you are ready. I read this book in high school and then we watched the movie. And I loved them both, the movie has stayed with me all these years and even though I knew what was going to happen, I still cried along with you. Amazing reaction as always, I enjoy being here!!

It's crazy how the feels in this movie sneaks up on you. The emotions hit you like a ton of bricks. Imagine having to watch this in high school like we were required to. Luckily for me, i had already seen it a few times before it was a required watch.
I read this book in high school and fell in love with it. Re-read it so many times. I was surprised when I found out S.E.Hinton was only a teenager herself when she wrote it. Love the movie, too. So many names that weren't known then! Just amazing. Thanks for reacting to this movie and letting me share it with you and watch it again. It's been too long since I've seen this.
Still remember seeing this in the theatre then had to watch it again in school and do a report.
I tell everyone that this is, basically the white version of Boyz in the Hood.... Pony is Tre, Johnny is Ricky, and Dally is Doughboy. This is also my favorite book, growing up. The Follow up to this is RUMBLE FISH and TEX which all take place in the same area and some of these characters are mentioned.

This movie holds a special place for me. Not only a phenomenal movie, it was filmed on Tulsa, Ok while I lived there as a teenager. It was a big deal.
Also, kind of a cool story. Danny Boy from the rap group House of Pain (Jump Around) loved the book and movie so much, he moved to Tulsa. Bought the main house. He renovated it and turned it into the Outsiders Museum.
I cannot express how much I love this film and the book it's based on. It's been a part of my life since I was a kid and the names Soda Pop and Pony Boy seem normal. A beautiful and emotional reaction, to a beautiful and emotional film. This movie is real comfort when times are rough and I especially appreciate the Drive In scene. Going to the Drive In was one of my favourite things as a kid, and its wonderful being led back to those warm, and happy memories.

This movie was based on a book by S E Hinton, and when filming rapped up on this movie they started filming on a 2nd book by that author, Rumble Fish. It also has Matt Dillon and also Dennis Hopper, filmed in black and white with moments of color I highly recommend it.
I remember reading this book in school and watching the movie as well. I thought my teacher was a sick bastard for making us watch the movie and making a classroom of children cry lol.

the themes of toxic masculinity and "being a man" that make the movie compelling are also what makes it so sad to see the best characters consumed by their own inner desires to simply exist in the world without persecution. Good on you for expressing your sadness and showing how strong men can be emotionally vulnerable and still be worthy of respect and admiration. it's what pony boy would've wanted. Real Men Cry,

One of my favorite movies as a kid was Up The Academy with Ralph Macchio ( filmed probably in 81-82) he was also in Eight is Enough for a few seasons as the cousin that came to live with them. I had that boys posters on my wall as a 13 yr old girl . I am 56in two days . Love this film ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My dog’s name was Soda Pop ❤ I always wanted a Pony Boy or Dallas to go with her. My current dog’s name is Bennie. He’s a rescue and that’s the name he came with. I like to think they were both named after Rob Lowe characters because he played Benjamin in Wayne’s World. Continuity.

This was a catapult for most of these actors. It was Leif Garrett (the one Johnny killed) who had already been a teen heartthrob as a singer. I remember when it came out when I was in high school and was an instant favorite and classic. I went and got the coolest butterfly knife because of this movie. lol.
