- Duruflé composed the Requiem using themes from Gregorian chants. Perhaps the expressive nuances one hears in this recording reflect the described chant practices detailed in sources that Duruflé would have had access to, such as in the Liber Usualis. It's as if Duruflé imagined a group of monks singing, only to encounter a symphonic orchestra.

This is superb. I really would love to hear the rest of the recording.
Wonderful. I have never heard Durufle's own recording before. Despite the scratches very moving and sturdy.
très émouvant , superbe
Would it be possible for you to post the entire Requiem of this recording 🙏? Its fabulous!! Would love to hear the entire performance. Thank you for your consideration.
Beautifully composed, beautifully rendered.
Please, please. puh-leeze, post this entire recording!!!!!
You can hardly get any closer to the composer's intentions than this...
I agree
I feel like the orchestra is much better in this one than in the four other recordings to which I've listened. I like the sappy emphasis and sweep. The choir is a bit slow: if I were in it, I'd be gasping for breath. It seems almost a bit unnaturally slow. Thanks, Yale, for sharing. I think that I must subscribe.
wonderful
Actually, the chants on which Durufle based this work come not from the Liber Usualis but from another chant compilation, the Graduale Romanum -- and there are no "expressive markings" attached to them there or in any other "original manuscripts"!
Thank you for this comment, we have edited the description to be more clear with regard to source material and performance practice.
Has this recording ever been released digitally? Discogs only lists LPs.
I only know of it being on LP,
Its been released on cd on the Erato label.
Robert Shaw is still the best
Yes, but not conducted by the composer.
Conductor clearly doesn't understand the music.
