  • Cassius and Harper are siblings with different rare disorders. Both of their conditions have less than a 1 in a million chance of occurring and are de novo. Madison, their older sister, wants others to know that even if something looks different, it can still be incredible.

    I wanted to provide a definition for "de novo" in regards to genetics. I would love to hear further input from any geneticists watching this video as well! The following is an excerpt from Wikipedia, "A de novo mutation is any mutation/alteration in the genome of any organism that wasn't present or transmitted by their parents. This type of mutation occurs spontaneously during the process of DNA replication during cell division in a fetus whose close, biological relatives don't have the mutation."

    • @laurelcalderwood6425
      @laurelcalderwood6425 Před rokem +85

      Yes! I often describe it to families that the genetic variant is brand new in the person rather than inherited from a parent. We all have many de novo variants, but only will know about them if they are in a gene or other part of our DNA that causes clinical symptoms. Sometimes an apparently de novo condition will recur in the same family because a parent will have the variant in their egg or sperm cells, but not in the rest of their bodies. We call this gonadal mosaicism.

      I use to think that way about kids and parents. My 1st child was easy going and well behaved. I found out I was pregnant with my 2nd child a week into lock down. Even when lock down lifted we didn't get around much because so many ppl I know are very sick or elderly and didn't want to risk giving them Covid or even a typical baby cold. So when we take the 2 year old out, he's very excited and rambunctious still. My friend works at the local elementary school and says the kids are so changed now. I think the the pandemic really did a number on our kiddos, more than we can understand right now. I try to give families a little more leeway than I use to, especially now that my toddler is the one trying to escape and run in front of your cart.

      @@Kree.B. I think different kids just have different personalities. Parents can use discipline techniques to reinforce their strengths and rein in their weaknesses but don't have complete control of who their kids are. I know a COVID toddler about that same age who behaves pretty well in public but will scowl at strangers who come up to her to tell her she's cute. Funnily enough, her father also blames this personality, very different from your toddler's, on not getting out much during COVID. She also has five siblings and all the kids have widely differing personalities in spite of being raised by the same two parents. I think it's amazing to watch kids grow up and notice many of their personality traits were already there before their parents did anything. Our individuality is a marvelous wonder.

    It didn't say whether there were any more siblings. To think Madison was the only child for eight years, then has two siblings with special needs. Her attitude is amazing! We need more people like her in this world.

    I'm so so happy to see this situation with their big sister! My son (nonverbal autism, high needs) LOVES my stepdaughter who is 17 years older than him. I sometimes just watch in awe at how easily they communicate with no words. My son's first ever smile was to his sister and it's just been that way since.

    I saw all of the comments about Madison before I watched the video and I thought, I better check this out. And yes, now I also hope my 7,9, and 11 year old girls have just a tiny bit of her kindness and maturity when they are 16. What a very lovely family

    Kindness is a language everyone can understand. Continue to shower these kids with love and kindness and see how they will bloom. Like Madison said just because they are different doesn't mean they are not incredible.

    OMG. Madison is amazing. Wow what a wonderful girl. I was so fascinated with listening to her. The parents are very special people as well. Whoever gave them these children a higher being gave them to them because they can handle it. I wish I was rich I would love to do something special for that family. Make good things happen.

    Madison is an amazing sister but I hope in the future she doesn't feel compelled to strictly stick to her vow of being responsible for her disabled siblings. It may turn out that's what she will do but I hope she doesn't sacrifice career or her own family if they become choices/wishes of hers. No doubt they will always be a high priority to her but perhaps not No 1 priority.
    She seems very mature for a 16 year old. No wonder her mother almost cried describing her.

    Wow, this family has a lot to handle, but you can feel the strength, love and respect. Madison just radiates intellect and emotional intelligence, especially how she noted the importance about accepting her siblings rather than disregarding them. Very insightful, and I admire her practical outlook to life...that, yeah, it's awful to think about, but in an ideal world, the kids will outlive their parents and she is choosing to have an important, decisive role in her siblings' futures. Madison, I hope that all of you have a wonderful life and I hope that you will have many opportunities to pursue your own unique dreams and goals, too!
