Aaron is a murderer. He is actually my drum teacher and he's a beast. He can play with or without triggers super fast. He can hit hard doubles without triggers. He's very well trained and is a great teacher and player. He plays now for Faceless and Interloper after leaving ROS, where Mike Caputo, another great drummer, took over his spot.
Excellent Phillip! Glad you've got such a legend of a tutor!
ROS keeps messing up, lost mike caputo to brand of sacrifice.
he's a sound engineer's dream: tiny kit and such a clean player. those feet are just insane.
Totally Jack!
LOVE the simple set up.
Gear is waaaay overhyped IMO
Agreed 100%
He is total and complete insanity !!!!❤️❤️🔥❤️🩹❤️🩹❣️❣️❣️💕💕💕❣️💙💙💛💙💚💙🖤🎚🎚👺🫣🫠🫵🏼🦵🏽🦶🏽🦶🏽🦶🏽🦶🏽🫲🏾👆🏼👇🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏾🤟🏽🤟🏼
think that black case to the left of his bass drum is just to stop his pedal from moving when he goes interstellar with doublestrokes
You beat me to it. 100% agree.
Thank you both!!!
don't think so. doubles usually don't have that much power especially not when going that fast
@@hazardeur true but you put massive downward pressure on the pedals, which on something like wood or concrete, slides all over the place. Depending on how you do your doubles, but one of the ways a lot of people do them is with pressure from the hip flexors, which is why you'll see a lot of people lean into it. The other way of doing it isn't as bad for sliding but is much harder to learn/do consistently as its about finding a sweet spot in the rebound and controlling it. Watch Francesco Paoli for the former and John Longstreth for the latter
The dude is also insanely nice. played with him a fair amount of shows and hes always stoked to see you and says hi etc
That comes through in his playing.
TBH most drummers are very nice
2:12 I did front of house a few years ago for them. It's just his tool case he's putting in front of his left kick pedal to prevent it from slipping.
Aaron rules. Great drummer, great dude.
Great to hear Mike!
That heel toe pedal work is tight! What a solid player! And that snare reverb in the cut back sections sounded so good!
Couldn't agree more!
That box is the slide stopper coffin for the Tama Iron Cobra slave pedal!😅
Also that fast Doublebass was achieved by the lovely Heel-Toe Technique which once mastered can take a lot of strain off your legs when playing fast doublebass.
Thanks for the info!
All I can say is, triggers makes it more easier to find out your mistakes. So triggers are for the precise players, which for the better part has become a necessity in fast technical metal.
Yup. Nice!
Yeah, i was going to point out the same thing. People used to talk shit about using triggers, but it has def become more acceptable with especially the tech death crowd. Personally I'm glad because I've always thought it was interesting and added an extra dimension to the technical aspect.
the only fair criticism of triggers is volume normalization and smoothing across strokes
Exactly!! It’s funny hearing people say “Triggers are cheating and that’s how they play so fast.” 🤦♂️!! I’ve argued with a few morons who had this notion stuck in there head. They are ONLY for sound volume purposes and the drummer still has to play at speed and time. If they mess up then you will definitely hear the mistake. Sounds like popcorn popping out of time. Great Comment my friend! Seems we have actual knowledgeable people in this Comment Section.
You guys don't realize triggers convert the hits to midi notes which can and are usually edited or quantized in software. Not saying that's happening in this particularl example.
That deep brass snare drum is the heart of his sound
I must admit to always having focused on the guitar in Rings of Saturn - perhaps because it's such a unique/distinct sound, or because Lucas Mann is so talked about. Now I can only say, hot dang, that is some good hitting of the sticks on the drums.
I love the shreddy stuff as much as the next guy, but i never fail to make a stank face when they drop to a backbeat with a stupid fast kick and Ian doing the most ridiculous gutteral he can.
Watching you fuck up the names of the drummers is part of the fun for me, honestly lol
Add this to ur list : Sol Niger within , check out the vid with Fredrik thorendal and Morgan Agren...it's amazing !
And hello from India !
Rings of Saturn have gotten a lotta flak from critics saying their music is programmed ,fake , drums are triggered..etc etc..I honestly don't care what they think, I personally enjoy their albums.
A lotta people say the live drums are sloppy compared to the studio versions leading a lot of people to speculate triggers were use in studio to record via MIDI and a lot of shine was added via editing each note to sound just right....I dunno enough to comment on that tho.
I second the Sol Niger Within suggestion!
Hey now... This is getting a few likes!!!!
yeah epic vid i second
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Fredrik Thordendal is guitarrist from Meshuggah and Morgan Agren is one of the 3 drummers from Devin Townsend's latest release, together with 66Samus and Anup Sastry. Just to give you a bit of context! ;)
I support this decision!
The big thing with triggers in metal is some players have adapted a technique of turning up the trigger sensitivity to the max and basically tapping, so there’s no effort to playing, but those few couldn’t play without triggers if their lives depended on it. The majority of current metal drummers using triggers do so because with thunderous bass and usually 2 guitars with crushing distortion, the kick gets muddied in the mix...so the triggers clean it up. Nothing wrong with that. Guys like Alex Rudinger use a module from 2Box and his trigger is actually sampled from his own kick drums.
GREAT info!!!
I think I just figured out how to explain triggers to people. Take acoustic guitars for example. You can add some bits to them and make them semi-acoustic, so you can amplify the sound, or add effects. That same principle applies to triggers, they're just how you make semi-acoustic drums.
@@grimecube That analogy does not hold, youre not amplifying the sound of a drum when you trigger yore replacing the whole sound with a whole other sound. Its not real and removes the need to be dynamic and consistant. Hence seeing all these metal drumers barley hitting bass drums and snares yet getying loud perfect rim shots or perfectly even bass volume. Its lame
Eugene ryabchenko the violation. Did a cover play through and ended up becoming their actual drummer. Dude is super talented and insane. Blast beats and head banging, I promise it will not disappoint.
He looks like having a "near death experience", just by playing this song. I guess that's why this genre is called death metal.
Aha! I was just watching your Bleed video (first I'd ever seen of you) and I commented that you should give "Margidda" by Aaron Stechauner a watch/listen. I come to your channel and see this video! Pretty cool that someone else recommended Aaron :)
Welcome aboard Nathan! Thanks for watching bro
What I really like about Aaron is that he is one of those guys who takes away peoples "I don't have the gear to play like that" excuses. He is dishing out doubles at breakneck speed on a pearl eliminator like it's nothing. Like with Gene Hoglan and his rickety old Camco pedals 🤣
I love that ethos. I'm not a gear head at all!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Only thing I'm adamant about having in good quality is the heads. You can make any crap kit sound great with good heads and a good drummer.
his double strokes are so clean.

Have you looked into Aric Improta? A day not knowing Aric Improta is a wasted day 😂
1) Case is to keep the slave pedal from sliding away
2) Where did you hear this cymbal hit with no sound?
3) I had the pleasure of mixing Aaron on tour. He triggered his kicks with ROS, nothing else. Guy is and absolute legend of a nice guy. Out of this world drummer as well.
I'd never heard of this drummer but dude's playing is TIGHT.
Yup!
Rings of Saturn has had some amazing drummers. Mike and Brent where amazing also, Aaron is solid. :D
Love everything about his videos. So clean and crazy with a simple set.
Couldn't agree more!
32 bass drum hits between each snare hit!?!? So crazy! I recently found your station. I'm a fellow drummer. You are AWESOME! I binge o your vids all the time now. Thanx and keep it up!
You still didnt react to Lord Marco playing Rings of Saturn songs like Mental prolapse,The Husk etc.Very very very underrated yet absolutely insane drummer !
I’ll get there! 🙌
This dude's finger and wrist technique is so sick. Look how smooth that ring/pinky action is while he's got it gripped. So much control.
My favorite drum reaction channel, we welcome you to the extreme metal world 🤘
It's called the Dirk Blast, you should check out 66Samus and his video on blast beats for beginners and for experts, he goes through all the types with notation... you know what, I'll challenge you to follow along on your own kit and do some sick blasting Andrew!
HAHA. That sounds like a challenge!
Up next: Jazz drummer plays metal, aka. Kai Hahto of Wintersun, playing Sons of Winter and Stars. Enjoy ;)
This!!
@5:00 that is called "heel-toe technique" and it is in 32 notes per bar, keep in mind that BPM also play's a big factor. (Also check out: Derrek Roddy amazing drummer)
Would love to get to Derek Roddy!
About Aaron triggering: He usually only triggers his kick drum
Hey man, love these videos! Can I suggest Travis Orbin's playthrough of 'the walk' by periphery. It's absolutely mental and full of cool techniques
Thanks Jonny!
Seen Aaron live with Rings of Saturn and live with The Faceless on their last tour run. Extremely talented dude.
Please react to “Chris Turner - 40 Roll”
That blasting on both sides is the Dirk Verbeuren blast technique. Basically you just blast while giving some rest to the other hand.
thats just half the story, the Dirk Blast is just a flam beat used on the snare and a given cymbal
Thanks for the info and input guys!
When he played for Rings of Saturn, the only thing that I know is that he triggered the bass drum.. everything else is just microphones. There is a video on youtube where he talks his gear he used at that time, and meinls podcast on Spotify has an interview with him.
In relation to 7:20, just before you paused at that first gravity blast, there is a blast beat pattern where his hands alternate on the snare. You can clearly see he flubs the snare hits at the end of the blast beat before going into gravity blast, but it sounds continuous and normal. Also the dude is getting the fullest snare tone from lifting his sticks like 2 inches off the head during blasts, while having the lightest grip on his sticks I've maybe ever seen in metal.
Aaron is a legend. I miss him and Pete. And now Ian
Aaron S. is an amazing drummer. He is no longer with Rings of 🪐 and was replaced with a beast of a drummer known as “Lord Marco” who I would definitely check out if you’ve never heard that guy play. The man is a Lord of Drumming. To the channel owner: “Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together of these amazing drummers of genres of music that are not very popular to most.” People of course are not going like the sound of Technical Death Metal, Technical Deathcore, etc but it should atleast be respected for the skill needed to perform this music. Death Metal is perceived a lot like Jazz music was by mainstream society when it made its first appearance because it was so different sounding/off time signatures. Anyways, thanks again and take care all!
Thank you so much for that!
Awesome choice. Aaron is not currently with Rings, but he was with them for their 3rd and 4th albums, and possibly the earlier ones but I don't know. He's a great drummer. Nice video!
Cool, thanks!
Check out Lord Marco and Mike Caputo please. If i'm not mistaking Marco did the last studio album and Mike is the touring drummer. Both are absolutely insane on the kit. Recommended Marco on a recent video because he blows my mind everytime
Aaron came into the band after Lugal Ki En came out, and recorded drums for Ultu Ulla (the album this song is off of), and continued to be with the band until mid-2018, that's when I stepped in for live shows and Marco did drums for Gidim and the (yet to be released) Embryonic Anomaly remake. I'm now a full member though and will be handling all drum duties going forward after the Embryonic Anomaly remake comes out
@@MikeCaputo well there is the master himself! Thanks for the summary. And you sir are an amazing drummer. Cheers
Evgeniy Novikov - Demolisher playthrough pls 🤘
He should absolutely do that one, it's killer!
Damn, that track is insane. That russian part is making me goosebumps...unhuman.
Thanks Sancho!

Double kick drum strokes are sick.
Add to your list
Mike Manghini playing “pale blue dot” by Dream Theatre
Thank you!
This. Please do!
Of course! You’ll be stunned by his stick control
These guys were killer live
Great Jared!
Its just a kick sample. Most metal drummer use them these days. I love it personally and I have a Roland module with samples from all sorts of professional drummers. As far as triggering goes anyone that knocks it is ridiculous. Let's see you play these songs fast and clean with them too!
Yeah totally. I wasn't knocking it that's for sure
I play with triggers... it’s actually harder at times. Because you sacrifice accents and volume for speed. So if your pedal accidentally hits the damn bass drum you sound like an idiot.. haha it takes pin point accuracy to play clean with triggers but obviously they’re great for speed
Best I can tell (and I am in a discord with this bands current drummer) that box is there to keep his double pedal from running away. Without that box or some gaff tape, there is nothing to hold the slave pedal in place.
Thanks Jonathan!
Triggering is not necessarily a bad thing in this genre because there are very few drummers who can play in excess of 220BPM without kick trickers and define the notes perfectly every time, regardless of technique. It's mainly for consistency sake.
Triggers still have to be activated so the beater still has to hit the skin and so in most cases the drummer is clearly able to hit this speed, this is why it's always more impressive live than a studio recording where no post editing can take place.
This video clearly has some post edit processing to remove minor issues but to claim Aaron isn't an insane drummer because of some cleanup would be laughable at best.
As for another drummer to checkout I would reccomend John Longstreath "All Things Dead" for more metal or for an insane Gospel Drummer check out this video From Eric Moore czcams.com/video/EcB-mv8Vo84/video.html
Great stuff. Yeah I wasn't slating it. Just opening up the convo...
Not sure how the fans or other drummers in the genre feel about it
Those fast kicks are basically double stroke rolls so he needs triggers so each note has the same volume and sound smooth
Spencer Prewett said that it is help with edurance, so while blasting you swap hands and your other hand can move around the kit which acts as a rest, you just end up feeling less exhausted playing this kind of music, even his kick style is about endurance.
The little box I believe is just his tech for the triggers
As for the China hit that you saw but didn't hear, he may have edited it out for the sake of the track sounding cleaner, but I can totally believe that all those sounds are real and not sampled.
Aaron is 100% organic in his kick drum. Those are double strokes, known as the "heel-toe method".
I don't see a huge problem with triggers on kicks if you're looking at sound output instead of dynamics. I think that's how he generates such a mean sound with his (really awesome) heel-toe technique for that gatling gun sound. The triggers will still initiate sound when prompted, as far as my own understanding goes, so in theory it should just enhance what would otherwise be quieter sounds, but still be playing what you play.
I'm curious about possible triggers too. I'm guessing that the wired box is perhaps a bass drum sounding trigger that makes the bass hits sound a lot louder while he lightly taps with the double kick? He might also have a switch to speed up the double bass pedal tempo (there are triple & quad pedals that exist, this can also be done electronically through triggers as well). It just doesn't look like his feet are swinging fast enough on some of the more extreme double bass pedal sections, so there might be some sort of tempo trigger, although I might be wrong on this assumption, and that's not to take anything away from this dude because I could never drum to this technically extreme metal, so mad props to him.
The box in front of his left pedal is just to stop the left pedal from sliding away from him. Triggers just play a sample when you hit the drum instead of using a microphone for the drum. It makes the sound more crisp, reliable, and able to cut through the mix better (especially at really high speeds where it would just turn into mud). If you weren't using triggers, I don't care what technique you're using, if you're playing over 215-220bpm it just turns into a rumble and it will get lost in the mix.
yuss!!!!
So happy you did this!!! I love rings of saturn a suggestion could be guitarisr and songwriter Lucas Mann’s other band Berried alive also please react to some fear factory
He has the bass drum stuffed and he has a trigger on it. All the other percussion is mic’d. You can’t play past a certain speed on the bass drum without using triggers. The acoustic notes just don’t respond on a 22 inch drum past a certain tempo. It’s not cheating because you still have to move the peddle beaters at the same tempo and that guy has beautiful clean 32nd note doubles. Speed metal drumming it’s not my cup of tea, but I do respect the technical skill and concentration required to achieve it. I like that this guy keeps it to a four piece set. Thanks for the video
Impressive as hell. The obvious cut threw me off but who cares this man is insane. Love Aaron. Met him in Hollywood at a Chelsea grin/born of Osiris show cause my
Buddy was interview the bands and man, he is the most down to earth human. So stoked you did this review
Ayeee we finally got some ros! Gotta check out the current drummer too, he's a beast
That box makes sure his left foot bass pedal doesn't move when he plays. Sometimes it happens while playing double bass.
Dude that was fucking insanity. Clearly he has practiced innumerable hours on metal techniques. Those kicks were so clear, so quick. Great chops. It's on the opposite end of the spectrum from jazz for me, but on equally high peak of their respective mountains.
My only critique is that great metal drummers tend to sound the same (to ME, obviously), or lack a certain personality. With jazz, you can hear and FEEL, each players personality. Again, I consider them equally high peaks of their respective mountains in drumming.
We need a George Kollias reaction!
Fucking yes
Hopefully a Patron picks one soon!
George as an all-around talented player. He can play jazz, jazz fusion extreme rock, and move the peddles and wrists like nobody’s business. He also plays traditional grip just as well as he plays match grip.
Oh shit yes, get ready. The first minute of this clip is insane, looking forward to see what your thoughts are on this style of playing.
Crazy town Nathan!
You said it Andrew, this guy makes more noise with his four piece than dudes with an entire drum store in front of em, and about his his dexterity and dynamics???... Oooofffffffff...
That's it Rishi!
Rumor has it the reverb on the snare is still going.
HAHA
Love it Gunnar!

If you're going to react to Rings of Saturn you should check out their current drummer Lord Marco. I'd say the songs Mental Prolapse or The Husk would be your best bet. Stechauner is amazing. But Lord Marco is on another level.
Marco isn't their current drummer though, Mike Caputo is.
@@billybob728 mike caputo attempts to play Marco's shit when they play live. But Marco still is laying down studio tracks. Lucas Mann was just talking about him laying down tracks for the Embryonic Anomaly remaster last week.
The bass drum is 100% sound replaced (triggering with double strokes on the feet), snare and the toms are blended probably about half and half sound replacement vs real.
this dude is the fakest drummer on earth. his band is garbage too.
@@buckfuttler2877 you must be confusing him with aaron kitcher
Metal is the new classical music.
Should check out Lord Marco. He did the drums for Rings of Saturn's latest album.
why does the synth +lead guitar riffs and drumming (and missing vocals lol) all sound so goood in this song?!! 🤷♂️ Aaron's the real deal, no triggering here as far as i know😉
Jamie-Saint Merat is a must to see!!
Im a good bit late on this video, but to clear up the critique. The kick is obviously triggered, the box is keeping the tom stand from tipping under his hard hits, and the china hit you didn't hear is simply because hes only using 2 overheads for the cymbals, and that china has to cut through that 20" crash.
Considering how many angles this video is shot from, I'm assuming that the playthough was shot multiple times, but recorded once, so maybe the time when you saw the china get clipped, that was shot separate from the take they used for the audio? Just a thought.
Possibly. I feel bad now even bringing that up!
Just made me think about triggers...
But yes that's a good observation man!
If you think this is fake... clearly don’t know Lord Marco. Marco Pitruzzela is an amazing drummer you should listen to, he has played in many bands, including Rings of Saturn
the whole video is using live sounds except the kicks which are obviously triggered the one china hit that didnt sound if you look closely is an accidental hit he hits it from the bottom up while trying to hit the floor tom so it was most likley removed just to kee p it accurate to the original track
Case is to keep the slave pedal from sliding away
Got it!
BiG fucking UPS; Andy Rooneyy
Yo John!
Just incredible! I wonder if less drums make you better at faster pattern? Hmm, guess ill never know.
Hey, love these videos.
I wanted to suggest Lyle Cooper’s play through of Planetary Duality by The Faceless.
You previously covered a play through by Alex Rudinger playing a song from that album. Would be good to see you react to the original drummer!
I was there
Without the triggers on the bass the reverb starts to bleed between hits when your going that fast. I know it's possible to do without it, but it's a lot harder than using triggers.(and I'm sure he's just as clean without them).
Think its pretty safe to say he's using triggers with samples. He might be using samples of his own kit and thats why his snare sounds organic.
Was not expecting his setup to be that small.
Neither!!!
Another INCREDIBLE drummer is Nils 'Dominator' Fjellström (did work w/ Dark Funeral) -- maybe the song Vobiscum Satanas..?? dude has some serious skill.. check it out for a video or just because it's great 😊🤘🏻
100% triggers. Super common in this type of genre. Makes for a more constant sound when doing fast 32th notes or whatever it was. As for sampling it didn’t sound like it to me
React to Chris turner's 40 roll. You wont regret it!
Sounds good!
Also he’s doing 32nd notes on that specific part, so he’s doing 16 between 1&2 and 16 between 3 and 4 because he’s ridiculous.
That china hit you mention around 6:00 wasn't a "played" hit. He brushed it with his stick as he was passing through his tom fill. No samples, just a good eye sir! The snare has some additional EQ'ing (or maybe an added sample?) in some parts.
Fair enough Aaron!
I don't like to make big calls on a first watch! And certainly don't want to accuse anyone of anything!!!
Thanks man
@@AndrewRooneyDrums No worries! I have been a victim to phantom cymbals once or twice myself hahaha. Great video again!

Jon price - ov fire and the void
The small black thing in the side of his snare might be a trigger, and the box on the floor the "trigger-brain"... didn't watch if the small black things are in every drum, but very little in the way of microphones compared to the sound visible. I'd guess everything is triggered.
We gonna make metal Dude out yet. Yes bass trigger is typical of this. And yes don’t mind the pauses and your comments, it’s why I watch
