Surf Tip That Helped me | NO ONE Talks About This

  • Something I struggled with when I was learning and progressing in surfing was I struggled with my timing and positioning to the wave and timing of my pop up. A common habit beginner to intermediate surfers do is they look the wrong way as they take off and ride the start of the wave, or they look too late. We have a sport like none other where while we paddle and look forward, the wave we want to catch is behind us. This is one of the reasons why some surfers struggle with timing and position when it comes to taking off the wave. They often catch the wave only by feeling. Feeling is good, however, we also need to see what is happening.
Our road is the wave, and it is behind us when we start paddling. So our vision should be over our shoulders while we paddle and on the wave while popping up and riding the wave. This helps us to be ready for what comes next and helps us to read and surf the wave accordingly, instead of going into the ride blinded, not knowing what is happening.
Have a look at some of these tips and I hope it helps you.

amazing tips, wow you got some amazing low drone footage of you riding the wave and without the wetsuit. Keep it up, shit I need to surf somewhere without a suit

Thanks 🙏 Yes you should go on a surf trip where you don’t need a wetsuit 🙌

This has been a total game changer for me, along with bending at the knees. Your tips have been very spot on, and concise lately. Glad you're back.

This is actually a tip that can make a huge difference: looking at the wave between paddle strokes allows for a better entrance since you will know what the wave is going to do and if something changed when you started paddling for it.
Never looking over your shoulders means you will always be late during the popup, dropping almost straight which will result either in nose diving or popping up on flats, so you will never be able to surf down the line (unless you've some crazy skills to recover and the wave allows you to do so). As a low intermediate I can say that have been countless times where I guessed wrong and never looking at the wave resulted me in picking the wrong line or ending up on a closeout section rather than enjoy a longer ride.
It is also a very big factor when trying to pumping up and down, where your eyes should point at least 3-5mt in front of you.
I would say that on backside is a bit harder because of the torque combined with the unnatural position, but it will definitely come with focused practice and time.
    Best!
