  • In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about thrombocytopenia - a condition that occurs when the platelet count in your blood is too low.
    What are platelets?
Platelets are tiny blood cells that are made in the bone marrow from larger cells. When you are injured, platelets stick together to form a plug to seal your wound. This plug is called a blood clot. Platelets are also called thrombocytes, because a blood clot is also called a thrombus.
What is a normal platelet count?
A normal platelet count in adults ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. A platelet count of less than 150,000 platelets per microliter is lower than normal. When you have a low platelet count, you may have trouble stopping bleeding. Bleeding can happen inside your body, underneath your skin, or from the surface of your skin. You may not have serious bleeding until your platelet count is very low.
    What are the symptoms?
Bleeding causes the main symptoms of thrombocytopenia. Symptoms can appear suddenly or over time. Mild thrombocytopenia often has no symptoms. Many times, it is found during a routine blood test.
    Signs of bleeding may include:
    - Bleeding that lasts a long time, even from small injuries
    - Petechiae, which are small, flat red spots under the skin caused by blood leaking from blood vessels
    - Purpura, which is bleeding in your skin that can cause red, purple, or brownish- yellow spots
    - Nosebleeds or bleeding from your gums
    - Blood in your urine or stool, which can appear as red blood or as a dark, tarry color
    - Heavy menstrual bleeding
To diagnose thrombocytopenia, your provider will ask about your medical and family history. They will also ask about your symptoms and do a physical exam to look for signs of bleeding and do a blood test.

Thanks for the info. My platelets have been low since 2020. I was sent to a hematologist/oncologist I had to go to him because my b-cells were off which was found during an EUS. He wasn't concerned about the platelets at that time. Now that it has gone on for 4 years I am concerned. I just had a MRI and it showed early signs of cirrhosis of the liver. I do NOT drink but have several health problems, including chronic pancreatitis. I just don't know where to turn. Thanks again for the video

Can it be fixed with diet ? Also is there a chance it could be mistakenly counted in the lab ?

I have Sjogrens syndrome and under the care of a rheumatologist in the UK. I have had a low platelet count of around 100 for at least 30 years. At first the hospital lab used to highlight the finding but now they don't bother. I know when the count is particularly low when I develop red pin prick marks on my arms. Ive learned to live with the condition and have never been offered treatment under the NHS

@@quelikingz hey! Thanx for your reply! Truth is info on net is a bit contradicting, can't seem to find any legitimate info as to weather or not lowers platelets.
Did your platelet returned to normal afterwards?

    • @quelikingz
      @quelikingz Před 2 měsíci

@charaprotopapa4768 mines didn't the first time I had major blood loss due to a period. I had been on birth control pretty much everyday after that until it stopped working and I had to get a hysterectomy. My period blood loss is how I discovered I had a blood disorder called ITP, it's a condition that causes my body to attack my platelets. I'm not sure how it quickly they bounce back in normal people.

Wondering if antibiotics affect as well few days prior my blood draw had a toe infection and took some doxycycline. Stopped in on Monday and Friday morning had my blood test.
