My wife and I were at that race. We spent the night in Toronto the night before. The crowd was large and the weather was rainy and kind of miserable. Secretariats performance was spectacular. A race I will never forget. I did want to mention. for those that might not know, Ron Turcote was the regular jockey but he was serving a 5 day suspension and Eddie Maple rode him in his last race.
I was at Gulfstream Park in 1972 for the winter meet. I would look at the racing form every day and watch for the workouts in New York between Secretariat and Step Nicely looking forward to the 73 Derby. When Secretariat hit the middle of the far turn in the Belmont I started laughing. By the time he got the eighth pole I was almost crying. Anytime I watch one of these great races with him even today I'm 68 years old I can cry so easily watching him. Truly a great horse.
I wish I could've seen Secretariat run, in person. That had to be an awesome sight to witness. I'm just happy I can experience his races on youtube. Big Red LEGEND!
I was there that day. I will always remember that race for the rest of my life. To see it replayed is amazing. I bet 2 dollars on Kennedy Road and Two dollars on Secretariat. The winning ticket paid 10 cents profit, and I still have that ticket.
Oh WOW - just Oh WOW! What else can one say about Secretariat? My heart goes into overtime every time I watch him run. Love;'ya, Big Red - I will never see a horse better than you in my lifetime
My wife and I happened to be in Toronto for the weekend. Planned on a quick breakfast and then back home in the States. Saw in the paper that Secretariat was going to be at Woodbine that day and we went. Great experience to brag about even today.
For those asking why this was his last race and why he was retired so young here's ur answer. The situation with Secretariat was quite unusual, Penny's father, Christopher Chenery died in January of 1973, it was determined that the family would sell the breeding rights in Secretariat in order to pay the estate taxes. Such was the interest and great expectations in him as a stallion, he was actually syndicated in late winter BEFORE he ever ran in the 1973 Triple Crown. As part of that agreement Penny retained all ownership and sole management rights of Secretariat, but only until November of 1973 when the contract stipulated he must be retired to stud at Claiborne Farm. The entire Meadow team would have loved to race Secretariat at 4 as they all unanimously believed he had yet to reach his full potential. Unfortunately for the sport, as well as racing fans, we are all left to wonder "what if...". I like to think this is how every one of his 4 yr old races would've gone, setting track or world records and winning by 6-10 lengths, easily without a sweat!!!!!
+Glen W. Ford ruffian did, yes. I don't know too much on dahlia I don't know if she was undefeated. I know she beat all the boys in a race. Ruffian was born in 1972 while dahlia in 70 so I'm sure they were put in different races because of the age difference.
THANK U WOOODBINE 4THIS I WAS A KID WORKING 4 CONN SMYTHE & DONNIE WALKER & IWAS THERE WHEN HE CAME WON & LEFT I LOVE BIG RED & I LOVE WOOODBINE THANK U E,P TAYLOR
Secretariat was a unique horse. He could run on dirt or turf. He still holds the records for the fastest times in the Triple Crown races. He raced older horses. He set track records. His smashing 31 length Belmont victory still stands. My admiration for this horse has only grown over the years. He is the greatest Thoroughbred ever. So great to hear the legendary Daryl Wells call his final race.
The video should have been timed from the point when the horses reached the finish line for the first time.. Although slightly inaccurate, this clearly demonstrates Secretariat's superiority. Hard to imagine any horse in history could have beat Secretariat on that day.
@2:40 is me and my 2 brothers running across the outer track to the turf track as Secretatiat goes by. i was 13. and will never forget that cold damp, October day. yes we got in trouble because we weren't supposed to go on the outer track.
Lost in another unbelievable performance by the horse that arguably represents the pinnacle of T-Bred breeding is the brave performance by Kennedy Road, a superior racehorse by any definition. He had bowed a tendon while turning a 1:08 4/5 in a six furlong workout just the week before, and in my opinion should have been scratched. He had to be hurting in this race, but hung in there with Big Red as long as he was physically able. As if trying to compete with a prime Secretariat wasn't tough enough, this was a 1 5/8 mile race. This also was KR's last race.
It seems unlikely, I agree, but this is from the Canadian Horse Racing HOF:Although he was older and cagier at five, he was still the old “Kennedy” in his final week at the track. He was entered in the Canadian International Championship, a demanding mile and five-eighths test against many of the top grass specialists. Also in the field, and making his final career start, was Secretariat. To prep him for the race, his young trainer, Whitaker, ran Kennedy Road in a six-furlong sprint a week before the International. He was never quicker, setting a track record of 1:08 3/5, a clocking that stood for 26 years at Woodbine. The effort was costly as he came out of the race with a bowed tendon. However, that didn’t stop him and Avelino Gomez from exciting the huge throng on International day.
Wow people say the belmont was his best race this could well have been as good as the KD or Preakness, not only a champion on dirt but great on turf too which is very uncommon. 👌
It's not that big a deal to run on grass and dirt, even Chrome did. Just saying. Secretariat fans love to exaggerate. But, I do tend to think this is more impressive than the TC and for me,it's his stride first time around, or should I say glide, then at the far turn in a race that distance, he takes off like he just entered. As one who loves the horse but his connections and fans are annoying as Hell, even this impresses me.
OH God.... thank you !!!. I've always wanted to see this race clean with that CALL and the roar of the crowd !! and people running onto the dirt track. Thanks again !
Greatest turf horse of all time and he only needed two races to prove it: one track record and one winning margin record, both over long distances as a 3 y.o. against older horses.
@eckythimble exactly. with Ron Turcotte, Secretariat probably would have won by more and set a record as well, wow, too bad Ron wasn't on other greats!! but, of all secretariat's races, this one actually impresses me the most. his stride is so unusual, is it not? doesn't it seem the way he stretches his front legs that he takes one stride to other horses two? and I'm a Man O' War fan!
indeed, Sec had that short cannon bone, allowed him to get his legs out in front faster, Man O war was a monster, with amazing proportions, imagine a 6foot 8 athlete with perfect proportions and musculature , The vet's etc say sec Sec should have been faster , as his stride was only a foot shorter than Man O war', but his even better musculature, bigger lungs and heart ( 22lbs, freakishly huge), he had mind boggling acceleration (Baltimore), and super endurance (31 lengths ? Belmont ).. like having a sprinter's body with the cardio of a marathon runner.. just doesn't happen.. we won't ever see another sec, it wasn't just that he won, it was the way he won, utter dominance.. he was a genetic freak of nature..
Kinda feel bad for Sham, as he'd have won the crown in 73.. always thought Ronnie and Red had the perfect connection.. Ron would never abuse or miss treat him, and Sec trusted him, and visa versa.. they both strived for excellence and despite the fairytale , dispatched competitors in a brutal and efficient manor.. demoralized the field with that move in Baltimore, then utter and complete destruction at the Belmont.. 31 lengths does not happen.. ever.. not even in the most lop sided races.. lest the entire field blow up with the exception of the leader .. sham actually set a pretty good time that day..
As for Dahlia's 1.8s faster time, Secretariat lost about 1sec being eased well before the post by his back-up jockey Maple and probably 1.8sec for the poor (cold, wet and heavy) track conditions. So in equal conditions and with Turcotte on board, Secreatariat wins by 1s (5 lengths).
Connor Duke What you have to look at is the man o’ war stakes. Secretariat ran the 1973 man o’ war stakes in 2:24 4/5 in 1973 at Belmont. Dahlia won that exact same stakes in 1974. She ran it in 2:26 3/5. Both tracks had the exact same condition, and that’s 1 4/5 seconds apart. Dahlia ran this 1 5/8 race in 2:40 flat, which is about the same performance as her man o’ war. So, if the track conditions were great like in 1974, and secretariat wasn’t eased so bad, I think secretariat would’ve ran about a 2:38 flat, 2 seconds (10 lengths) better than dahlia just like he ran 1 4/5 better than her at a 1/8 mile less distance on equal conditions.
@indkeith Well you have to remember that Dahlia raced against proper racehorses like Allez France, Grundy and Bustino. I suppose you can just about squeeze Secretariat into that league although none of those horses would have been beaten by Onion.
tigerboy1966 lol, that’s so delusional. Squeeze secretariat in that league? Allez france best dahlia 6 out of 6 times. Secretariat faced forego, cougar II, Sham, and riva ridge, all better horses than dahlia ever faced. How do you know onion wouldn’t beat them? Onion set a track record for 6.5 furlongs. You’re just shifting the goalposts a ton there pal. Dahlia lost 33 races and lost to horses way worse than onion in a few of those!
@indkeith Well I'm not claiming a nine length win for Dahlia, which is what the winning times suggest. I'm sure that Secretariat was better than he showed on this day. I am sure he would have given her a good race. It would have been respectably close, but I would say Dahlia by two,
Wow...I never saw this thread from so long ago. However, your absolute fixation on one racing performance and it's final time is the mindset of a rookie. I have met and talked to Eddie Maple about his races with Riva Ridge and this race with Secretariat. Secretariat simply lumbered along in this relatively slow paced race, obviously, as a stalker. If you understood anything about horse racing, you would understand the effect of pace and further understand that, often, a horse and jockey simply do what they need to do in order to win. The notion that a given race is a maximum performance of a horse is foolishness. The difference is how far can a horse be pushed and, yet, still, win. For Sec, he was pushed in many races and responded by setting record after record. I would be happy to give you the races and the times. This race, like the Arlington Intl, was nothing more than an exhibition.
In turf faces, unlike dirt, the variability of conditions on end times renders time based comparisons essentially meaningless. Take Frankel for example, who did not set a single track record in his illustrious career. So in turf faces winning margin is taken as the yardstick. In this, race, run in less than ideal cold conditions on a wet track, Secretariat set the still valid winning margin record of 6.5 lengths, despite being hand ridden and eased off half a furlong before the finish post. Making his a far more impressive performance than that of the comparatively tiny mare Dahlia.
tigerboy1966 I think secretariat easily beats dahlia. The surface that day was extremely slow and it was freezing cold. Dahlia won on a fast track. No comparison. Dahlia didn’t even win 33% of her career races. I don’t think you research anything. You’re just a euro glorifier.
No idiot-Secretariat wasn`t all out. Just enough to win. Dahlia was whipped like crazy. Both horses on the same track at the same time makes the difference. The track conditions were completely different. You don`t know squat about horse racing. How many records has she set without the whip?
Leo Bowman Lol, a length is about 8 feet, and if a horse runs a length per .1 seconds, that means he runs a quarter of a mile in 16.5 seconds, which is way off! I think you should change your handicapping there pal.
I was there. I was 15 and leaning over the rail screaming for big red. One of the highlights of my 60+ years.
Wow, you're incredibly fortunate! I'm sad he was before my time. I can only imagine the energy that day.
How much money are you up lifetime betting horses?

Secretariat = chills and goosebumps.
My wife and I happened to be in Toronto for the weekend. Planned on a quick breakfast and then back home in the States. Saw in the paper that Secretariat was going to be at Woodbine that day and we went. Great experience to brag about even today.
Fans sprinting to the dirt track inside rail to get as close as possible -- while Big Red made it look easy in the stretch run -- says it all.
Kick-ass call by the announcer. Like Sham in the Belmont, Kennedy Road was toast after trying to be in a match race with the immortal Secretariat.
"There he goes there he goes "...... the rest is history.
I like the fans rushing the rail for the stretch run.
For those asking why this was his last race and why he was retired so young here's ur answer. Mike Blast Thank you for enlightening us on Kennedy Road. I had no idea he had such a successful career. It's nice knowing he also lived a long life.

It’s secretariat down the stretch in a blaze of glory😎
Amazing horse! Won first race and last, too!!!!
He actually lost his first race.

The Great Darrell Wells with the call.
This was the year i was born i love horse racing
Apparently Kennedy Rd’s trainer missed the Belmont when he sent Kennedy Rd out to try and run Secretariat into the ground.
It was time for a world champion to go rest in peace.
Amazing animal...quite aggressive ! Still...champ!
From France.
Imagine being flanked and chased by secretariat for most of the race??...It will not end well for you.

Roughly 1:15 to 1:30 shows Sec's phenomenal stride.
There's surely never been a smoother and more effective thoroughbred stride before or since.

Secretariat? Dominant on the turf and dirt
I'm sure rail birds that they were crying realizing that they would never seen another horse like that again

For what it's worth...Turcotte said Secretariat was 10-15 lengths better on turf than dirt.
One year later, Dahlia won the same race in a time 1.8 seconds faster. That's nine lengths. Go figure.
